Topic: I had a listen to Jeff Beck the other day...

Jeff Beck is one of those people who's name I keep seeing pop up as an influence in interviews with artists. I've also heard him being mentioned a one of the great guitar players so i decided it was time for me to check out what was going on.

I got my hands on the "Wired" album and after a first listen I have to admit I was like "What the h*ll is this?". But I've put it on a couple of time again when im doing work or whatever and I have to say it has grown on me, especially Led Boots, killer bass line in that.

The whole experience reminds me a bit of Steve Vai's "Real Illusions: Reflections"

Personally I would take Beck over Vai or Satrian anyday, just personal preference.  They are all mega talented.

If Wired grew on you, get your hands on a copy of "Blow by Blow", Wired's immediate predecessor.
One of my all time favorite albums, not a bad track on it.
Jeff, I'm with you...before another JB took his place, Jeff Beck was, without question, my favorite guitarist.

Jeff Beck-The genius

The above players are not in any specific order of rank I just wrote them this way and I dig them all.

Very excellent album that!! The genius of Beck is that he's never happy doing the same thing,or just the minimum. He's always pushing the envelope, and for that he gets major respect from me!

Bravo Matt. It is great to hear you are using this forum as a reference for the world of git-fiddle players. Jeff Beck can "lose" me at times. but when his music moves me, it does so in a big way. I'm extra fond of Guitar Shop because Terry Bozio plays drums on that CD. The versions of "Behind the Veil" and "The River" are stellar! The other mentioned CD's are also important parts of my music collection. Have fun and again, Bravo to you for expanding your horizons!  Cathy

Beck is an extraordinary musician, let down by inconsistent material IMO. He's a better player than he is a writer.

Parts of all his albums are fantastic, but it's hard to point to one single album that is definitive, esp considering the change in his style over the years.

I've got all his discs, and find a compilation disc made up of songs from all of them is a great way to experience him.

His official bootleg albums, available on his website, are also excellent introductions to his playing.

Not to mention the late great drummer Mickey Waller, who died recently, who laid down a fantastic performance on almost all the album. Little trivia fact about Aynsley Dunbar. When Hendrix was deciding who was going to be the drummer in the Experience, it came down to Dunbar and Mitch Mitchell. Not able to decide, Jimi flipped a coin, and Mitchell won, thereby becoming part of the Jimi Hendrix Experience.

I think it was in Guitar World's 300th Issue that I read an excerpt from an old interview with Jimmy Page where he was discussing a conversation with Jeff Beck (Yardbirds era) about this new guy on the block (EC) and how he impressed Jimmy. Also mentioned the 3 of them grew up within about 10 miles of each other.

There had to be something in the water...

I vote for Blow by Blow as well. It's been one of my favorites for over 30 years. I never tire of listening to it.
