Re: Should I spend ....

Roy, what have you been told about gardening in your speedos!?!?! big_smile

I personally wouldn't pay that money to go and see EC. To be honest though, a great deal of his music doesn't really send me the way other artists do. I also wouldn't pay that to see Dave Gilmour either, my Tone Hero until Joe popped onto the radar, and as I sat there watching the DVD, I looked to my friend and said "We shoulda been there!!".

I have however paid that much to see the Foo Fighters at Wembley Stadium, but that's going to be an all out rock fuelled experience that just couldn't be passed up on. I've never been to a huge stadium gig, and I don't think I'd forgive myself if I didn't take the plunge.

If his music moves you enough, do it. Live with no regrets!!

Wow, thanks for all the responses and advices! smile

I really tend to save the money and go now ... what if I don´t go and he decides afterwards that he doesn´t want to tour anymore - then I haven´t seen Eric Clapton and will regret that I didn´t go while I would have had the chance to see him. Oh wow, I´m sure I completely messed up the grammar in this sentence, but I hope you all understand what I´m trying to say lol !

Clapton is a bidness man.  He'll get what he can.

I'd be quicker to go see him if I knew he was gonna play 75 - 90 minutes of real blues.  I don't care about any of his hit stuff.  If I can hear it on the radio it doesn't belong on the stage or on the tour.  IMO not even humble.

I go see Joe twice.  Same set is fine.  I don't hear it on the radio.  BFTB plays a gig.  Nothing you ordinarily hear on the radio AND the chickees dance.  SGOOD.

Last time through here he played a very obscure setlist. Very few of the so called hits. Derek was on guitar and he did a lot from Layla. An extended blues set. He played more guitar than usuall. Much different than the couple of years prior tour. I saw him do the One More Ticket Tour in 78.

As far as I'm concerned Eric Clapton is a must see. He has evolved much over his career. Alsways a kick **** band. Billy Preston was with him the time before last and I can say I saw him.

Billy Preston (RIP luv you, miss you) and Doyle B II and Nathan East (a superbad bass musician) and Steve on drums was one of the most amazing shows I ever saw.  Loved it !  something for everyone.

Re: Should I spend ....

Eva, if you've never seen Clapton, you must go. A living legend. Without Clapton, how many of us here would love the blues like we do. He is a saint of the blues and rock and roll. Enjoy it for those of us who haven't gotten the opportunity. Some here have seen Clapton, and are telling you not to go. Well, they've gotten their opportunity. You at least need to decide for yourself. Many people told me that Buddy Guy sucked live. Well, I saw him four years ago and he rocked the house. If I would've listened to them, it would've been a HUGE mistake.

GO! And cheer for me! I hope one day to see this living legend of guitar, blues, and music in general in the flesh.

And I would bet the house that if Joe Bonamassa ever had a hit record the magnitude of Layla and Wonderful Tonight, he will play that song more nights than not.

Comparing Joe to Eric is just not a correct comparison. Eric has had a lifetime of a career, 40 plus years. As brilliant as Joe is, when did he release his debut? That's not a knock on Joe, that's just to show that Clapton has a lot more material to shift through right now. I hope that when Joe is that old, he has that many songs, because he will have given us all a lifetime of musical enjoyment.

And I'm sorry, whoever said the idea about dvd's instead, come on. You, I, and everyone here is that there is no comparison to seeing someone in the flesh. Was it cooler to watch Joe's Rockpalast show or to see him in the flesh? Who cares if you're in the nosebleeds, I don't care if I was a mile away, I would go see Clapton in a heartbeat. I hope that I have to see Joe from the nosebleeds one day, because that will mean he is huge.

That is EXACTLY the kind of thing that I was thinking of Eva - I just couldn't bring myself to attach the words to it.  But really, when you think about the number of gifted artists we have lost to one tragedy, or another - be it a horrific accident, disease, or addiction..... it makes me even more keenly aware of the OPPORTUNITIES we are presented and the NEED to see them thru.

We are lucky that Eric wasn't on that helicopter, although, besides Stevie and the pilot, Eric's agent, assistant Tour Manager and bodyguard were.  We are also VERY lucky that Eric is a RECOVERING addict and alcoholic.  Not only is he alive, but he is WELL.

I think it would also behoove us all to remember the whole REASON behind the Crossroads Guitar Festivals .......

Re: Should I spend ....

Eva,
I'm glad you've decided to go.  Clapton is the ultimate chameleon, I think he was born under the wrong sign and should have been a Gemini. big_smile I hope nothing but Clapton love rains down on you the night of the concert. smile  What is the size of the venue and is it inside or out?  Will Robert Randolph be the warm-up?  There was some talk about a recent outdoor concert in Canada the temperatures started in the 40's and dipped into the thirties...cold weather for guitar fingers!  I'm not sure when you started posting here, but in a full circle kind of way, I really got back into Clapton after I read that he was Joe's main inspiration in a Guitar One article.  I was an early fan with Cream, Blind Faith and Derek and the Dominoes etc., lost some interest with some of the heavily played radio stuff (like Sheriff) so I had a lot of gaps in my collection. Since then I've uncovered, like Joe has said, some good blues mixed in with pop, some of his collaborations with others, etc.  Some of the stuff was right under my nose after realizing that my husband actually practically had his whole catalog along with Clapton's music books.  I really like the One More Car, One More Rider CD and DVD mentoned, enjoy even his happy music of Back Home...  I don't love everything, but like Deezer said, huge catalog with tons of good stuff and that never could satisfy everyone all the time!! I'm sure some of the same songs that earned Eric the most $$$, may sometimes feel obligatory to play...  Eva, if your seats are near or far, bring binoculars to zoom in on those hands, especially with you being a guitar player. smile  I thought that was quite special how Joe mentioned that the prerequisite to purchasing a guitar would be first to be well versed in Clapton.  (paraphrased from a sirius show)  Love those 2 videos Steve and Michael, that's the Clapton I love.  Yeah, its a shame and a sin Eric...;)

If we take the ticket price out of the equation, it really comes down to personal preference of whether one likes the artist or not.  I don't think I would go see the FooFighters for free if I had the opportunity.  I was so unimpressed with their performance on one of the music award shows about a year or so ago, Dave Grohl is a screamer, I could not understand hardly a word he sang.  Maybe our good JohnB74 can enlighten me otherwise. smile My middle kid also saw the FooFighters about 2 years ago as the warm-up for Weezer in the same large venue I saw Clapton/Cray...he said the same thing about Grohl screaming the entire concert.  Maybe I would enjoy recordings better, they seem really popular?

Carl- you got the story right.  Clapton has had more than one guardian angel on call constantly during his lifetime!  He's in a good place now and I think his happiness is just shining through his music more than ever.
