Hey Steve,
The Scala review relayed from a UK Clapton fan, Rooster. I hope you had a nice birthday! When are you seeing Clapton?
"SW at the Scala was very good indeed, although the '
special guests ' that were promised never materialized
!
However, he performed well over 2 hours, and played
some real oldie gems interspersed with tracks from his
new album.
Highlights for me were those classic Spencer Davis
numbers - ' I'm a Man ', ' Keep on Running ' and '
Gimme Some Loving '- all superb
He also performed a great version of ' Can't Find My
Way Home ', and 'Had To Cry Today ', but his
supporting guitarist couldn't match EC, which is
hardly surprising !
He also performed a rare Traffic number ' Why Don't
You Light Up And Leave Me Alone ', which was
originally written by Jim Capaldi.
Some of the numbers from his new album were stretched
into funky jazz jams which were a nice contrast to his
classic stuff.
The band comprised of SW , a guitarist , bass player , conga
player, drummer and a guy on sax/flute, but I've
never seen any of them play before.
The only disappointment was that he didn't play ' Dear
Mr Fantasy ', which was a bit surprising.
Overall, a fine gig - and the place was jam packed.
A good night out...oh, and it was nice meeting you Alberta !"
About Steve's guitarist-he brings a brazilian, jazzy guitar influence to the table and Steve is gelling with that...all I have to say is I'm glad Steve's guitarist took up a new guitar, one with a headstock, I found that chopped off one disturbing to look at... And Alberta and her husband are also Joe fans, from the country of Ricola?...first met Joe in the parking lot near his bus, all nice things to say about Joe, goes to more concerts than anyone on the Clapton site...Nice addition to the setlist to include Traffic's...Light Up...
I don't know the details of the contest, but recently a fan won a contest on Winwood's site and the prize was a 15 minute interview with Steve. Now if I won that, I would have to ask Steve how it felt to have someone as talented as Joe uncover and cover HTCT, etc. etc. I don't need to explain to anyone here..you get my drift...;) To my knowledge, I don't think Steve has played HTCT in his setlist until recently, I think Joe breathed new life into it made Steve and Eric appreciate it more...just my 2 cents, of course...:) That was the question I wrote into The View...yikes, instead Whoopie Goldberg decided to sing along with Steve's Higher Love...I hope Cindy Crawford gave Steve a big kiss backstage!
I wrote to the editor at Vintage Guitar in response to the great June issue about Stevie and they actually printed my letter in the July issue. My Baby, She Wrote Me A Letter....
This is a clip from Berklee. Looking forward to seeing Steve with Tom Petty!
