Topic: Zito Finally Wins One

The Giants just got a small return on their Barry Zito investment as they just beat the red hot Marlins 8-2. Question is will he lose another 8 before he wins again?????? Zito 1-8, $126,000,000.00, just doesn't add up.

Re: Zito Finally Wins One

I hear ya Dawg man,

Where's the incentive for a guy signed for 126mil?
You know hes not selling insurance in the off season to make ends meet or caring about the $4+ price of gas. Nope, he'll go out and pitch every 5th day or so and hope for the best and try to not stub his toe on his way to the bank. All in the name of sport?- I mean entertainment. A day at the park for 4= probally $500. When I was a kid we used to save up a couple of coupons from the back of milk cartons and get into the park(shea) for free.
Life was simpler back then.

Re: Zito Finally Wins One

The crazy thing is that Zito became the barometer that most good pitchers used when negotiating contract renewals.
Carlos Zambrano is looking like a steal comparatively, although at the time he re-signed I didn't think he was worth it.

Re: Zito Finally Wins One

gotta love how a guy that makes about 500K per START can manage to loose 8 in a row like that.  That's incredible...he is paid for 35 ACTUAL days of work a year.

I'd like to work 35 days in a year and make 17 million for my time. smile

Re: Zito Finally Wins One

The real genius in the whole Zito saga has to be Billy Beane the GM of the Oakland A's who realized Zito had nothing left in the tank and let him loose into the free agent market, knowing full well the A's didn't have the coin to compete with the other suitors.

Re: Zito Finally Wins One

ESPN mag has an article about the gamble of paying top dollar and 5 years for big name pitchers. Another good example is Pedro. Sox won another series without him. You wouldn't know they won listening to Boston sports radio. Now I know nothing will make these people happy! (Yes I'm a sox fan,but not a fan of their fans!!)

Re: Zito Finally Wins One

As an A's fan, let me clarify that the A's were not going to sign Zito.
Had nothing to do with coin, had to do with his deterioration.  He was free to go wherever he wanted.

Re: Zito Finally Wins One

The A's quit spending money on their free agents after the Haas family sold the team. A good friend of mine and two of his fellow workers in the marketing dept. were laid off to resign Canseco, Welch, MacGuire, and Dave Stewart. Jim and his co-workers were the top sales reps. for 5 years running and consequently were the highest paid in their dept., unfortunately they were the prime target when the Co. payroll had to be re-aligned to sign those four all in one year. At least all three got world series rings for their efforts. The Haas family was the classiest era of A's baseball in the years they've played in Oakland. Let me clarify as I said, Zito had nothing left in the tank.

Let me clarify since you forgot to put this in your "clarification" :  you also said in the above quote "knowing full well the A's didn't have the COIN to compete with the other suitors."  You didn't just say he had nothing left in the tank.

That is a misleading statement in regards to the A's, as the A's were not going to keep Zito period.  It had zero to do with his other offers.

As an A's fan, I just wanted to set the record straight it had nothing to do with money as you implied.

Re: Zito Finally Wins One

That's all the game IS about is money and the A's can't compete because they don't put butts in the seats. I still have the pennant they gave away thanking the 2 million fans that showed up in the 1988 season. That was twenty years ago and even though the A's have drawn 2 million a number of years since then it takes 4 million like the Yankees draw to bankroll a team of free agents these days. Perhaps when the A's open their new stadium they'll sell out on a more consistent basis, we'll just have to wait and see. I'm not dissin' the A's and this isn't a flippin' argument (R.C.), it's just the state of affairs as baseball goes these days in the East Bay. Barry Zito isn't the real villian in my opinion, it's his bloodsucking agent and the owners who keep shelling out this kind of money. Where will it all end?????????????

Re: Zito Finally Wins One

Ya see you went off topic.

I wasn't talking about baseball in the East Bay or Baseball in general.  I was specifically talking about Zito and his signing.

I wasn't making an argument, I was trying to show the exact circumstances in regards to the A's and Zito.  Not any of the other A's affairs, just Zito.  Very simply, he mentioned Coin and it had nothing to do with it in that circumstance in regards to Zito.  In fact, the A's were trying to trade Zito.  As an Oakland fan, then you must know they are rebuilding with younger players and prospects.

Re: Zito Finally Wins One

Your Welcome.

I'll go off topic to let you know as an A's fan that The A's just called up Carlos Gonzalez today.
I'm sorry to see him go from the Rivercats but glad he's called up.  He's one of are up and comers, but be patient with him.  He didn't have alot of Triple AAA experience and is moving on the fast path.  I am really rooting for him.

They also added RF Travis Buck, reliever Brad Ziegler, and reliever Kiko Calero today.

Have fun at the A's games.
