Re: Blues Awards per Blues Foundation

Instrumentalist Pedal Steel????????????? Robert is a unique player and this is a unique category no doubt invented to pay him his due and in the process blows all credibility to this list out the window in my book. Who the hell was he up against in the voting process???????? I like this guy, so let's mold a category to fit his style/talent.

the first time I saw Bonamassa, it was an amazing guitar show, a rough and tumble band with a power trio model.

They were great from the beginning and only got better.  Just didn't want people to think they were rough and tumble in a bad way.

Jane Dear:

BDS is not what Roy is deluded about...agreed.  And yes you do know I have my reasons.  I have long ago given up trying to "fit in".

We have a local metal/punk band that nobody ever heard of and they make KISS look tame.  The bassist is a long legged female of many faces and a friend of mine.  They sell out every club they're booked into. SRO and they make big money.  Their fans are like Joe's...borderline rabid.  The classic rockers say "Who?"

I personally don't need an award from anybody to justify my existence or my passion.  It's been a lot of time, pain and sorrow to earn that freedom.  I trust my fans.  I trust my customers.  It's a nice place to be.

After watching all the stated good intentions of many Blues orgs shrink from the light of truth, I know they are not for me.  Like church, I know they fill a need for some.

But it ain't me babe, no, no, no, it ain't me babe.

Hope that helps.  Off to rehearsal.

Yes Roy, you did.  I was really not refering to your taste in music.  You'll be boiled in oil for using the wrong hot sauce.  lol

Besides this thread is not really about you or even about me.  I posted the listings to illustrate the arbitrariness (fugawi word) of any awards given by any organization.

Most of them are much ado about nothing.  No I'm not jaded, just realistic.  I'm happy for the winners.  That will be all some ever get.

SOS with new band for me.  All covers for now.  Blues that one can shake one's posterior to.  Original stuff on back burner.

We put a little different spin on things... 3 of us have been the only lighter fellas in 3 different, rather dark bands before, so we tends to get our groove on.  I was making fun of my deaf drummer once and a big shot drummer who will remain nameless just laughed out loud.

I said what's so funny?  He said "I watched some YouTube vids of the Jones Brothers and he looked pretty tight with you and Mr Guitar."  I replied rather quickly "That's because he has my bass monitor up his backside."

Then I was amazed he had watched them and remembered them.  Thanks gsj!

The ironic thing about the Blues Foundation is it is how I heard of Joe in the first place. My brother and I had started a Blues society based on the Blues in the Schools program. My brother was teaching at that time. We recieved a promo copy of ANDY. To make a long story short. Thus began my Bonamassa odessy.

Our first artist to bring in to the schools was Joe. I witnessed the power he had to sell the blues to any doubting Thomas. He is the kind of artist that can revitalize the blues. Yet he is not accepted by his peers. I couldn't believe it. Then I realized the guy's peers aren't Tommy Castro and Tab Benoit, Duke Robillard, and most definatley not Bob Margolin. His peers are, Page, Clapton, Hendrix, SRV.

The Blues Foundation had the future of the Blues in their house and never realized it. The blues could of benefited by accepting him but they chose to keep it a private club. They should embrace all the artists that pay homage to the Blues. They should even embrace John Mayer. Anything to spark an interest and revitalize the genre'

If my existance depended on the survival of the blues. I would want Joe Bonamassa to represent what I'm selling not any of those other artists expecially Bob Margolin.

This is the point I've been making for a while. Why hate on something just because it's not to your taste. If it brings more people to the overall genre, what's the problem? Apparently the answer is everything.

And for the record, I love Tommy Castro and many of the guys on that list. I love my blues as old-school as I do new-school. It takes all kinds.

RevPaul, Point well made.  I agree with the sentiment entirely.  But a pat on the back can be a sword that cuts both ways.  I have come to the point where I don't want anyone encouraging me to continue doing something that doesn't pay my bills or feed my kids.

One is art.  The other is marketing.  IMO they are not mutually exclusive.  There's a balancing act there.  Sell, not sell out...ad infinitun, ad nauseum.

I'm in this game for me. (Wife & kids)
