Re: John Mayer to play set of blues and covers on his summer tour.

For the record, I think "My Stupid Mouth" is a great tune....but you know the guy is hip when he plays stuff like http://youtube.com/watch?v=T6k6GKHedHw

He certainly has talent and he will no doubt bring some blues to the main stream...
Slow Dancing in a Burning Room is a brilliant song btw

The Dave Mathews enunciation

At least Eric sings like Eric.

Well - I AM A CHICK and I don't get THIS particular thing, AT ALL.  I don't really like that from John, and I didn't like it out of Dave Matthews, or the gazillions of young ones who've followed and are trying to emulate that particular sound.  Don't like it.  Don't get it.  It seems forced to me - like you'd have to go to a speech therapist to listen to people who have difficulty speaking clearly, and then apply it to your music.  I am going to have trouble believing that anyone who can be understood perfectly while speaking, suddenly slips into some sort of NATURAL state of imperfection, simply because they break out into song.  Don't get me wrong - I don't require PERFECT enunciation from my musicians (Dylan and Petty come to mind), but, at least keep it real.  It's interesting to me when artists 'snap out of it' for a song or two, and suddenly have the ability to sound more 'normal'.  When John does that, he's got my attention.  And that's two cents from one chick.  Keep it real boys, keep it real.

Re: John Mayer to play set of blues and covers on his summer tour.

in my opinion....John Mayer is the perfect example of someone who played the music buisness perfectly. He did what he knew he needed to do for him to be able to have the freedom to do what he wanted. He wrote commercially successful (on top of being amazingly complex yet at the same time very musical...take a listen to some early songs like St. Patrick's Day or Neon) songs that grabbed today's market from the get go, sold millions of records and basically became a household name...even if it was for "Your Body is a Wonderland" (which he has stated in several interviews that he's not even sure why people latched on to that particular song...it's not one of his personal faves) but at the same time, has achieved a level of success that has allowed him to take any musical path he wishes and his die-hard fans will still pay attention...i mean, who else have you seen or heard of lately who's released a multi-platinum major label album  (he's on columbia records) that had a cover of a Hendrix tune on it? more power to the guy for that...so in essence, John Mayer masterfully played the game until he BECAME the game...

I'm just appreciative that he's using his success to turn a younger, greener generation on to a style of great music that who probably would have never even considered it otherwise...

plus on top of it all...the guy can really play! anyone who does a version of Cissy Strut that funky is ok in my book! smile

Yes I call him up for counsel quite frequently. He is hipper and his memory is much sharper than mine.
