I heard LOTS of good things about that guitar.

It plays wonderfully. Big FAT neck. But it has a... cheap 'wolly' sound, sadly. Otherwise I would've bought one ages ago.

What did you expect to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House perhaps? The Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wild beasts sweeping majestically over the fields?

Best Strat I have ever played.

I don't see myself buying another Strat for a very long time, because I already got the one that plays like a dream, the Eric Johnson.

Really?  I've been nothing but pleased with the sound of mine.

Although, I have been thinking of putting some Lindy Fralins in it just because those PU are soooooo very awesome.

Re: Stratocaster question.

Japanese guitars typically leave American stuff for dead quality wise, but I had a Reissue MIJ and it had weak pups and small frets, neither of which I liked.  Only 21 frets too, which is fine until you hit a song that needs 22.
If those things don't bother you, great, go for the MIJ, the quality is perfect typically, but keep those things in mind when looking at any guitar.  Fretwork is the most important thing to look at.  Pups can be changed, scratches are less important, but frets and undedr your sensitive hands and fingers constantly.
I suggest you grab a cloth and clean any guitar you lok at.  You will notice every minute detail, and really assess the quality of the fretwork in particular by holding a cloth in you rhand and running it down the neck.  Poor fretwork will catch and pull threads.
Good Luck.

Indeed I have a reissue '57 MiJ Small frets yes but the pups are brilliant dunno bout newer MiJ's but I love mine :x

I dont think I'd look for a guitar to appreciate in value especially newer fenders considering how many are actually being made. I'd pick the guitar on how it sounds and plays, for me the highway I got is awesome and the MiJ is awesome.. And both bought after playing a hell of alot of dif guitars.

It'll be sooo worth it. Why spend your time dicking around in lower quality instruments when you can save for a bit more and buy something that you'll play for the rest of your life.

Re: Stratocaster question.

I've had a couple boutique guitars built and find them smoother to play, finer detail, ect  due to time spent than say stock fenders.  The big thing to me is how they sound and I really think that comes from the slab of wood, neck, and how it's all put together.  The few luthiers I know that build guitars seem to think that it's hit and miss; every once in a while you get a really great sounding piece of swamp ash, super light neck, and the guitar ends up being far superior to run of the mill stk strat. You all know what better hardware, pups, & electronics does.

Ron Kirn outta Jacksonville is building me a strat over nx few months, hope it will be the one; more than likely be the one for 6 months or so, ha but that's cool too.  Ya know though, my best sounding guitar is a stk 97 calif tele (with new hardware & fralins) I traded a 44 mag for with a guitar buddy.  Hit or miss sometimes.

I have other friends who swear by Scott Lentz guitars. They tell me sell every guitar you have and buy a Lentz and you'll never need another; somehow I believe they are right, but could never live with myself not buying/trading guitars, ha ha.  You all know how that goes.

Re: Stratocaster question.

Roy, What happened was I had Curt Novak make me up some of his handwounds for the chestnut goldtop tele being made over in Fairbanks.  We were talking and when he found out I had some chestnut, he wanted some, so I sent him a few boards. Novak is known for his custom handwounds but also builds guitars.  So when he got the wood, he sent it onto Ron Kirn and said when he wants special wood put together right, he has Kirn do it; advised me to do it too, nx time around. I think I did send you picts of a tele & strat body Kirn did for Novak from wood I sent him. Kirn used 3 bds for each body and I liked what I saw with all the swirling grain patterns.   So I started paying attention to posts about Kirn builds after that.  Wifey was in better than average mood one day and mentioned I should have a chestnut strat built if that was want I really wanted, WOW, I jumped right on that real quick.  Ended up sending Kirn 130 lbs of nice chestnut and he will have a chestnut strat done for me in July. If all goes well, having him do me an LP come fall.  Ya know, Roy if ya ever want any chestnut to build your own, I'll send ya some.  Kirn has enough chestnut there for 10 bodys at least if you ever wanted him to do one for ya.  Anyway, nothing wrong with more geetars; but I still usually only play maybe 2 of them everyday, the rest sit in cases, fall in and out of favor throughout the year.

Here's something else.  I bought that Motion Sound SRV-212 a month back, Rotary Speaker.  I haven't played my Cowtipper since. My junk 2005 Twin Reverb reissue sounds great thru rotary; better than cowtipper. I think its how well those speakers sound with 85 watt TRRI.  I'm not jokin, if I'd heard that rotary first, I'd never bought the Bruno or even consider a Two Rock.  That's how lush that rotary sounds; you gotta hear one.

Would be nice to post picts here, how do you do it?

Re: Stratocaster question.

The thing is that guitars are not only different from model to model but also from year to year and even from guitar to guitar within the same model, coming from the very same batch. My advice is that you try to get your hands on as many strats as you can in your area in as many music stores, pawn shops, rehearsal rooms etc you can possibly visit. DON'T buy any guitar that could not try (eg on Ebay or whatever!) Go for the lightest and most resonant one with a neck that you feel most comfortable with. Chances are that you might feel more comfortable with a 2nd hand guitar that is already broken in if it has been well cared for. Good luck finding your personal No1!

The blues don't depress me. It gives me a feeling of relief, of "Thank God, I am not alone" (Eric Clapton)

Zhurh,
I'm meeting up with Ron Kirn before the Jacksonville Joe show. Looking to try out one of his teles. Should be interesting.

Re: Stratocaster question.

Ken,  I see alot of people raving about Ron Kirn guitars.  Curt Novak's recommendation was enough for me.  I'm going to have Novak strat A5's on it.  KIrn can really put wood together nice.  I can send ya some picts of what he has done with the chestnut I sent to Novak; send me your email.   KIrn said it would take 2 months, not bad.  I'm still waiting on that goldtop tele from luthier in fairbanks, sez another 3 weeks, but I'm driving in tomorrow if it don't snow too bad that is, and I get to see her.

Kirn was telling me about this old ash he has that came from Canada, old stuff from building built in 1600's; might not sound any better but cool to muse about.  He'll tell ya about it.

I've been gasin bad for a lentz too, but got to try this Kirn first.  I figure I'll have it by July.

Re: Stratocaster question.

I'd like to see pics of that chestnut guitar. Send them to the email under my name. I'll have to remember to ask him about it.

I'm looking at his basic telecaster, with his own handwound pickups. He says all his guitars play the same, the differences in price come from any customizations. The more I read about him, the more I like. He sounds like a real character as well.

Hello everybody!

Im hunting for a new guitar and I'm not earning that much money (hey, Im only 14!) and Im looking for stratocasters.

Ive found some guitars I find intresting, but I dont know what to choose. What would you pick?

a Fender Stratocaster Made in Japan 62- ressiue

A Fender Stratocaster classic player 60's

or a Fender Stratocaster Classic 60's.

Thats what Ive been intresting in but yeah... hard choice.
What would you pick? Or is there a strat in that price class that could also be worth to take a look at?
Tell me please smile

//Simon

Out of the 3 you list, my choice would be the classic 60's. In reality, buy what you can afford. Don't worry about the asthetics. Just play.

Re: Stratocaster question.

I havent been on the forum for 1 week now, and there is a reason.
for one week ago , i bought a new guitar... fender strat classic 60's wink
got it like 50% cheaper because it was used, but it did not look used at all!

Anyway i like it, tell me if you want pics smile

Re: Stratocaster question.

Hi Simon,

congrats to your new strat.:)
Sure I'm (and maybe others too) interested to see that beauty.
I once played a classic 60 and it sounded very good. But I never liked the 7,25" fretboard and the thin frets. From that point I would have gone for the classic player (12" and jumbo frets).

Re: Stratocaster question.

Ron,
Got the pics, I'd like to see the finish product. Should be a cool looking guitar.

I never met up with Kirn in Jax, we both had a lot going on and couldn't meet. Maybe another time... I was looking forward to trying one of those guitars, but it's a 2 hour drive so I'm not sure when I'll get the chance.
