Topic: Cocoa, Florida May 1st 2008

Thought I would post a quick little review of last night's show (the first of The Florida mini-tour).
We were sitting 2nd row center on the aisle, so we had a very upclose view for the world wide debut of Joe's signature Gold Top Les Paul and it really is a beautiful guitar with the black back and trim. He played it most of the night and Joe looked and sounded great with it. It's a very classy looking guitar and went well with Joe's suit. We took pictures and will post them later.

Here's a preview. http://www.box.net/shared/adbiae3woc

The place looked packed, it is a pretty large (960 capacity from their website) , banquet hall type of place. The kind of place usually used for wedding receptions or business functions. I was a little worried about the sound, but it sounded great to my ears.

Guitar geek Tech talk timeout-
He didn't have his usual 4 amp setup or pedalboard. He was playing through a couple of rented Marshall dsl2000's (or maybe JCM2000s) with a crybaby, tube screamer(i think), boss delay, and I think an amp switcher on the floor. This is the first time I'd seen Joe without the 4 amp setup, but I could not tell any difference. I'd like to know Joe's opinion of how he sounded, but to me he sounded like he always does, a massive wall of great tone! He really knows how to dial in a Marshall.
Also, there was not a Fender in sight!

We got to meet Carmine briefly, Rick and Roy (Joe's manager) before the show and had a very nice chat with both Roy and Rick. All very cool, friendly guys. That was the first time I had met Rick, so I really enjoyed chatting with him for a while.

Joe looked very fit and trim in his suit, and his playing and singing was perfect. You could tell he was rested and ready to rock. I didn't write down the setlist, but I believe it was very close to the most recent European shows. He got many well deserved standing ovations from the appreciative Cocoa crowd. I loved every minute of this show (I think this is the 6th time). Like always, every show is a little different and special.

It's on to Jacksonville tonight at the Florida theater!

Re: Cocoa, Florida May 1st 2008

Thanks ken - what a good feeling to read a show review after such a long time! smile
Aren´t we a spoiled Bonafamila ?! Some fans of other bands wait YEARS until the next concert and we already get a little nervous when there isn´t a show for one month ... lol

I´m glad you had such a good time and got to see the new LP ... did´t Joe say he would probalby not have it for the Florida shows?! Well, I´m waiting for the pictures ... smile

Have fun in Jacksonville!!

Re: Cocoa, Florida May 1st 2008

Hi all. I was at the show too. My seats were row C seat 24 but I didn't sit there because it was about 4 feet in front of the PA stacks and it was LOUD! I ended up hanging around the soundboard in the back. I made an audio recording of the entire show. I had my little Handy recorder set up behind the mixing board up on a mic stand and I'm listening to it this very minute. Tonight, I'm going to master it on my PC and send it in to the archives. It sounds pretty good so far, but between songs you can hear people talking at the bar.
Overall, it was a good show. And that Goldtop with the black hardware sure is pretty.

Hey Mike,
Any chance of getting a copy of that recording?  Maybe put it up on dimeadozen?

Absolutely, I just want to master it a little before I post it. I'll put it up tonight or tomorrow sometime.

Very nice review Ken! And yes, as Eva said, it was too long of a time not reading a review of Joe and the Guys. Sounds like the new guitar turned out as special as Joe wanted it to be. Also, I just noticed something in the above picture, is this a new look for Bogie? Sunglasses?

Bogie, you're too cool for school man! cool

Roy

The lights were low and brutal.  I'll post a review to complement Ken's later.

Re: Cocoa, Florida May 1st 2008

My friend and I went to this show last night!  We had up front seating right next to where he entered on row J.  I thought the venue was great!  I liked the intimate setting of the conference room. This was my first time seeing Joe play in person.  I have the German rock palast DvD and the "sloe gin" album.  Was it just me or did it seem like there were a lot of ZZ top beards walking around?  Overall it was an awesome show but I was disappointed that he didn't play my favorite guitar: the fender strat.  Oh well I guess I'll have to just go and see him again!

Re: Cocoa, Florida May 1st 2008

Thanks to all for the reviews!! Like Eva said, it seems like it's been years since we had a report from the front. I can't wait to see the Signature Les Paul!!!!   Cathy

Re: Cocoa, Florida May 1st 2008

Glad it was so great you guys!

I was SURE that we would be the first to see the debut of the JB LP at Doheny in two weeks, but, somehow, Joe got it back in time for all y'all.  Oooooowwwweeee she's pretty!!!  I'm happy for you.

I noticed Bogie too, and wondered if perhaps the entire band was wearing da shades.

Joe indeed looks very fit and trim and he surely wears that new guitar well, doesn't he?

I know that Joe could play one of those kid's guitars with the plastic strings and make it sound good-

Re: Cocoa, Florida May 1st 2008

Wow, looks great...I'm so psyched for Doheny...off topic, Libby, think it's about time to post a Doheny thread? Get a head count of whose going?

About the amp situation, I've come to learn that it doesn't matter what amp you use, you're going to dial it in the exact same with very few variations, because your taste in what sounds good doesn't change from amp to amp.

Re: Cocoa, Florida May 1st 2008

Ken,

Did your tickets say J&R Adventures presents on them? I wouldn't be surprised if this Fla. mini-tour was all put on by Roy as was the fabulous Palace of Fine Arts show out here in SF last Sept. It's nice to have that kind of control rather than dealing with outside promoters. A three night drive-by and back to Malibu, and interesting plan.

Check out the "Sad day for Strat Fans" thread in the Amps and Gear section for a full explanation.

I'm walking out the door for the Jax show. This ticket does not say J&R adventures on it.

On to the Show!!!!

Re: Cocoa, Florida May 1st 2008

Hey Ken! Sounds like we saw the same show!

I think we met at the show, talked a minute but didn't exchange names. I had great seats also 5th row center (E). I remember you saying you were going to Jax after that show. I told you that I was down from Mass but wasn't going to the Jax show. I was down visiting my sis who lives in Coco.

My sister and her roomate are now Bonamassa fans! They really hadn't heard him before. I would occasionally send my sister a you tube clip of live JB or a link to somewhere else on the web. I bought us all tickets and they really loved Joe! They were both amazed at how good Joe was at playing the guitar! They also loved the songs, This was really the first time they have actually been able to hear anything by Joe. My sis bought "Sloe Gin" and her roomie bought "You and Me" after the show! They were ready to make the trip to Jax show untill they found out it was so soon (Friday).

I agree with ken that Joe looked great! He looks like he's gotten pretty fit and noticed him still drinking his Diet Coke in between songs. The signature Les Paul is a thing of beauty!! I'm not sure why, but I liked the tone of the other Les Paul Joe was playing better (it could have just been the songs?). I can say that after seeing Joe for the eighth time now. Joe only gets better! I did have some problem with making out the vocals though. I wonerd if it's because joe's voice goes from being soft to very powerful in volume if it's difficult to get the proper levels on him......... I did enjoy the venue. The only neg. would have to be the seating. i thought that the chairs that were set up for the show could have been spaced a little bit better (no elbow room) Also, it would have been gret if they could have staggered the rows so the chairs were not exactly behind one another. my sister being only 5'2" had a little trouble bobbing and weaving for a view..... Unless I missed it, I don't remember Joe introducing the band this time.

All In All Phenominal performance by Joe B and the band! I will keep checking the tour dates for an area show. I'm also excited about the upcoming Live cd.!

Man, I'm trying to upload to the DImeadozen site...I guess it's pretty busy, eh?
