Topic: Phil Collins Announces 'Retirement From Music Industry'

Phil Collins, known best for his role as the lead singer and drummer in Genesis, appears to have dramatically announced his retirement from the music industry.

In an interview with The Times newspaper, Collins said he had no plans to tour again and that any future writing was unlikely to become an album.

Unusually, the former Genesis star chose to make his announcement by reciting the lines of a famous Basil Fawlty sketch.

“Zoom! What was that?” Collins said. “That was your life, mate. Do I get another? No, sorry that was your lot.”

Collins’ bombshell comes at the end of an interview which sees him candidly talk about his career, including his 2001 ‘Urban Renewal’ album, which was a compilation of famous hip-hop hits.

“'Urban Renewal' was sweet because I’ve been – unfairly, I would say – plonked in the middle of the road because of a handful of songs,” Collins said.

“It came at a good time for me, because you do take a bit of a browbeating and, as you get older, you become better at accepting it and realising why it happens.”

Collins was also asked if he minded being most-known for one song, his famous ‘In The Air Tonight’, which was used recently in an advert for a chocolate company.

“Do I mind? Well, if you’re ever remembered at all, it’s only usually for one or two things. With me, it’ll be: ‘He faxed his wife a divorce’, which is actually bollocks, but that’ll be on top of the headstone.

“And then, further down, you’ll have ‘Da-dum, da-dum’ . . .”

Not a bad drummer I suppose!

Re: Phil Collins Announces 'Retirement From Music Industry'

I don't understand how people can just say they are "quitting" the music business. He will come out with an album in a few years I'm sure.  What if B.B. decided he wanted to quit at Phil's age.

Re: Phil Collins Announces 'Retirement From Music Industry'

Just curious and a question to the UK posters. Is Phil really thought that badly of in the UK? I don't believe he's really been thought of much here in the U.S. for the past 15 years or so. In fact, this is somewhat of an anticlimax as the Genesis reunion tour aside, he hasn't done much in quite some time. I will give him props though for his work on Robert Plant's 'Pictures At 11' album and his work with Brand X. I did cringe when he started working with Eric Clapton though....

Maybe it's time to grow posies for market.  I always thought he was a purty good drummer, but I lost a little respect when he made a remark about "reverse prejudice" after working with Philip Bailey (EW&F) on his solo album.

shades of Michael Bolton?

Ah well he's made more $$$ than me.  The people have spoken.

I honestly think Phil Collins is a monster talent... I loved the Seconds Out Live period of Genesis, His solo work in the 80's. He produced one of my favorite Eric Clapton Albums called Behind the Sun.   I understand that to continue to perform at a level that you set for your self is very hard and requires a lot of maintenance..  A great DVD to get is Genisis circa 1987 live from the the Old Wembly stadium. 4 nights sold out to 288,000 people.. Not bad... Good work if you can get it.. He sings so good on there.. Dont hate on Phil... He is great and will probably tour or record again... Ive never seen a retirement stick in 20 years of doing this.

Re: Phil Collins Announces 'Retirement From Music Industry'

Well, sorry Joe, I don't want to disagree with the boss but..... for me Behind The Sun isn't the highlight of EC's career. I think that period of Claptons work doesn't travel well compared to other material. And if I ever hear Phil 'Buster' Collins sing 'In The Air Tonight' again I think I'll end up behind bars big_smile

I also think that Genesis were far better with Peter Gabriel at the front and Buster on the pots and pans.

Mind you, as bigjeff said......he's earned far more £££££ $$$$$ than most of us and anyone who can sustain a career in this fickle industry deserves at least a modicum of respect......it's just so difficult smile

Re: Phil Collins Announces 'Retirement From Music Industry'

i'm kinda bummed...there's go my chance of ever jammin with Phil Collins while he's on the drums...

I heard he had like...a prog-rock band at one time...i can't recall the name of it though...Brand X or something like that...can anyone shed any light on this?

Re: Phil Collins Announces 'Retirement From Music Industry'

That's quite right Jane but it isn't one of mine. Doesn't make me right I know but there ya go.

well to his credit, Joe merely said that Behind the Sun was one of his favorite cd's of Claptons. reminds me when i say how much i love So Its Like That and people try to explain to me why it might not be Joe's best or even represent Joe the best. well, that doesn't have anything to do with it being one of my favorites.

also good to hear Joe being concious of that whole setting a level of success for one's self. i know he knows all that but its reassuring to hear it every so often smile

Nothing jump starts a career like a "retirement" announcement. Good set up for the Genesis reunion tour.

Brand X were more of a jazz rock fusion band, mostly instrumental Vince. They put out some great albums with Collins on drums in the late 70's, early 80's . Excellent players, John Goodsall was/is an amazing guitarist, and Percy Jones is a monster on bass.

Here's a clip from 1979, Brand X on 'The Old Grey Whistle Test' performing "And So To F"
