Topic: Buddy Guy

Hi folks

Buddy Guy hits these shores in June and I'm thinking of going to see him. Not a fan of all his stuff, but we be good to see one of the living Chicago greats.

Is anyone else planning to see him over here, or know who his support act will be?

Also has anyone seen him recently or have any comment?

thanks

Re: Buddy Guy

Yes Greenose..You need to have a Buddy Guy show on your life list. I've seen him 3 times in the last 2 years. He does talk a bit more during his shows than he used to (something I find a bit annoying to be honest). He always has a wonderful band, and the 2nd guitar player is bad arse...sorry I can't remember his name. But when Buddy gets down to playing and singing..It's art!  Funny story..Saw him this summer at the Chesapeake Bay Blues Fest. A thunder storm was cooking...right when he was laying down a riff there was a bolt of lightning. he said "Fudge" (or something to that effect) and the show was over! May have been his shortest show so far!   Cathy

Re: Buddy Guy

Gotta see Buddy.  I've seen him 8 times and he is fantastic.  Puts on a great show...he is a can't miss when he is in town.

Re: Buddy Guy

I saw him once 2 or 3 years ago and he was great.  His personality, stage presence, and voice were the primary attractions to me.  His band is great, too.  Plus, seeing him or BB is a look at living blues greatness.

Re: Buddy Guy

There is a great show up on Tape City, with Buddy Guy and Eric Clapton at Ronnie Scott's in London. The tapper said it is a small club can you imagine seeing these two in a small club.It was recorded on 10/6/87

Buddy Guy is amazing live, especially if you get him when he decides he's going to kick arse. I saw this when he played Eureka Springs back in 2004. Absolutely amazing. My favorite old school blues player of all-time.

Re: Buddy Guy

Buddy is brilliant when he flat out plays, but the last time I saw him he'd get into a song and then stop and ramble on about how he taught Hendrix everythung he knew. Definitely a legend in his own mind and not shy about it either. Fortunately that show featured Susan Tedeschi, Tommy Castro, and B.B. King and they were all serious about what they were there for.

JDawg, I can't agree with you more. Buddy is one of the best, but he spends way too much time playing cover versions of other artists' songs, stopping to show how he can ,quote, "Play that sh** too'. But when he's on and playing, he's excellent. It's like "Okay Buddy, we get it, yes you ARE an influence on Eric, Jimi etc. Now, play the stuff that influenced them, Your own stuff. Sometimes it's more shuck and jive than it is pure out playing, but when he does turn it on, he's amazing.

Re: Buddy Guy

For your viewing pleasure, here's a little gem I found of Jimi Hendrix watching Buddy Guy perform (wish it were better quality, but, we're lucky it exists at all, aren't we?)  Enjoy.

During another video interview, Buddy said that Jimi asked if he minded if he taped him (A TAPER!!!)........clearly, they both enjoyed themselves.

Re: Buddy Guy

Buddy definitely likes to entertain. I've heard that offstage, he's one of the most gracious people you'd meet.

Thanks for all your contributions. Having been off-line for a few days until today, I've already decided - I have to go. You've confirmed I made the right decision!

Re: Buddy Guy

Hi Everyone

I've booked a ticket to see Buddy Guy, at the Shepherd's Bush gig.  I was looking forward to seeing him, but I was talking to someone who had been to see Buddy Guy and he didn't like it when he kept stopping to talk in the middle of a song.  He said that he was rubbish, so I was a bit worried about the gig.  Reading your comments, however, has made me think that it might not be so bad after all.

Re: Buddy Guy

Regardless, you owe it to youself as a blues fan to see this man. I don't care if he came out cross-eyed and told stand-up jokes all night, it is necessary to see these artists while we still can. I count myself blessed to have seen legends like B.B. King, Hubert Sumlin, and Buddy Guy.
