Dave, I was trying to remember some quotes about that piece on the "system", so thanks for the link.

"Music produces an irreversible transformation in a child. This doesn't mean he'll end up as a professional musician. He may become a doctor, or study law, or teach literature. What music gives him remains indelibly part of who he is forever," Abreu said.

...and how about the followup piece on the 17 yr old w/ a violent criminal background who had scars that looked like someone tried to slit his throat....back then Ed Bradley asked him how it felt to pick up the clarinet...
"It's completely different than when you hold a gun," Lennar replied.

Asked if he thought his life was different because of the clarinet and the orchestra, Lennar told Bradley, "Yeah, a lot. The music taught me how to treat people without violence."

Music is certainly very powerful.  Yet we all probably know of a school system in America that has cut the Arts when budgets are slashed.

Great musicians have a language & vocabulary that transcends the usual barriers & touches us on a more primitive , basic & yet complex level....

...I'll always have London in my heart, and in my soul...

Hi Donna, glad you caught the show, yes it was quite amazing what it has done for the poor in that country. And as always there looking for donations to keep it up and running. Music makes us all smile and feel good, I have to have it when I'm feeling low. That was a little surprising to hear them words from the 17 year old, not the first thing that would come to my mind.

The piece on the cancer research hit home, actually got the wife to sit down and watch the show with me. Deb is all about any alternative to chemo and radiation, it's too bad there 4 years away from any actual testing on humans. Mr Kanzius may get him a nobel someday!

Re: 60 Minutes

Dave,
Thanks for sharing that, I wouldn't have otherwise known about the invention, which is amazing!! Recently, I've been donating some time to help out a cousin, who is on a mission to raise $$$ for breast cancer research with the goal being solely to get the $$$ into the right hands; she's handpicked two organizations through her own experiences.  She is a two-time breast cancer survivor at 53 years old, who was misdiagnosed on her second round, which led to a mastectomy a couple of years later.  Her type of breast cancer does not present with a lump, its all detected by mammography and can easily be misread, as was her case.  Some of the breast cancer $$$, in the Philly area anyway, last year got some very negative press, they actually turned away $$$ from volunteers that didn't meet the requirement of raising a minimum of $1200 with pledges when the volunteer was going to walk/run.  Sometimes, the bigger organizations just get involved in too much red tape & money doesn't get to FINDING A CURE!!!!

Very interesting article in today's paper...and back to your link, that's just great....I hope we read more about this soon.  Keep me posted if you hear anything. Sending good vibes and prayers to your wife Dave, keep the faith. smile

Re: 60 Minutes

Dave...right after I posted above, I sent that link to my cousin, who just e-mailed me back.  She lives in Erie, Pennsylvania and has long known about this because John Kanzius is from Erie and one of her cancer survivor friends is a very close friend of John's.  She gave me this link.

Re: 60 Minutes

Okay this is getting a little off topic, but I had to share this.

I read in a monthly kids publication that the children born since 2000 will be the first children in American history to have a shorter lifespan than their parents.  Mainly because of their eating habits.  Sad . . .

Dave,
I saw the show and toward the end of the story about John Kanzius, they said that he didn't have long to live. Why doesn't he use the machine he made on himself, what does he have to lose.My dad has prostate cancer and he said that he would try it now if he could.

Fret,

Have you been to a Water Park in Wisconsin Dells recently? I swear to goodness, the last time I was there it was like I was on a whaling ship! My gosh, not only the parents, but the kids were so over weight it was ridiculous. Compared to my two string beans, I felt like I should run out and buy them each 3 hamburgers to eat. Then I realized, what am I talking about? My children eat well and most of their meals are prepared at home rather than at a fast food restaurant. They get their fair share of fruits and vegtables daily. Add to that, they are both involved actively in sports. If we don't reverse this trend what will the children be like after two generations of obesity? Makes me very sad......

Roy

I know.  It's especially more prevalent here in places like Wisconsin.  I have two string beans for kids too.  I make sure they eat healthy because the way I look at it, I have a choice to put junk in my body, but they don't have the choice.  I'm thankful that I grew up on a diet of healthy foods because it's what I crave today.

Re: 60 Minutes

The original link to this 60 minutes is no longer here.  About the cancer research first shown on 60 minutes, the inventor John Kanzius has passed away, but continued support for the invention is coming from the medical community.  (recent meeting with the FDA)

Also, just in case you didn't read my other post about Help... smile, the Strings for a CURE project plans on donating money to John Kanzius cancer research.

Re: 60 Minutes

Thanks Shred,
I just realized the order of the stories changed and the link does not go to the correct place anymore. (I definitely have a love/hate relationship with computers. yikes)  I tried to search, but no luck....to be continued...
