Topic: Artist Peter Mulvey - some characteristics of Joe

Hi all

So this afternoon as I was driving home from work, I was listening to NPR, which the local affiliate is broadcast from the university I work for, and stubbled upon this little gem. There was an interview on the program "All Things Considered" which usually looks at things in life we don't stop and take notice of. Anyway, there was an interview with musician Peter Mulvey, I had never heard of him before. I think he is a very good songwriter and has a unique sound.

As I was listening to the interview, I started noticing similarities between him and Joe. Although they play a slightly different style of music, their approach to success and work ethics are very similar. Peter travels, is always on the road, just as Joe, and enjoys visiting with his fans. In fact, he is touring Europe in September. Peters following is a result of his fan base and hard work, just as Joes is. This is the link to the page on NPR where you can listen to the interview. The article is only a paragraph long, you must pay for a transcript, but you can listen to the whole interview. It is quite interesting.

I went to his web site and listened to several of his tracks. Although his music is more acoustic and not on the rock edge as Joe's is, it has a bluesy / folk approach. I discovered that each of the CD's that you can sample have a different sound to them.  His web site is www.petermulvey.com

If you go the website and listen to tracks from the different CD's you have to click on the little arrow inside the play feature next to the CD. It took me a couple of clicks to get some of them to play.

I recommend sampling the following:

Rapture - "Smell the Future"
****note about the CD- Peter's major label debut, it includes audience favorites "On the Way Up" (which was featured on the TV show Felicity)

Deep Blue - "Out Here

Ten Thousand Mornings - "Two Janes"

The Knuckleball Suite - "Old Simon Stimson"
****note - I listened to this a couple of times, I could not figure out if I liked it or not, and then i absolutely loved it after a few listens!
****note about the CD- "The Knuckleball Suite was recorded in two and a half days, with a cadre of world-class improvising musicians who had not rehearsed a single note of the songs together. It is not Jazz, but it is a Jazz approach. The years of study and refinement, theory and practice, are present, but are shrugged off at the doorstep of the studio. In there, it's rapport and intuition, spontaneity and spark. What gets spoken is the barest essentials: "Tag it twice?", "End on four to one, yes?" What is unspoken is every leap, listen, and turn. And what remains is usually take two, sometimes take three. Each track is a warm, large-format photograph of a gifted musical posse, caught in the very moment of Making It All Up. Out of thin air. For real. "

Sorry this post is so long! Many of you have said that you have introduced others to Joe. We should all be sharing our discoveries here. These are hard working individuals who need your support. For these musicians "IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MUSIC AND THE EXPERIENCE" Peter says in the interview that the only way to understand it is to see it live. Give him a listen and see what you think.

Later all!

Rhonda, regardless of artist, it is about the experience and it's always appreciated when someone introduces me to new music. I'm actually aware of Peter Mulvey as he regularly visits our neck of the woods.

I think we need a whole separate section for "Cool Artists Not Named Joe Bonamassa" where we can share names and links. Could be much fun.

Re: Artist Peter Mulvey - some characteristics of Joe

Peter Mulvey! Peter is great. He lives here in Milwaukee and has quite a cult following, has been popular among college students and aspiring singer-songwriters for years. He's quite a storyteller when it comes to discussing his songwriting and that makes his shows very interesting.

Something that Peter has in common with Joe B is that they have both hosted workshops here, at the place I work for, in the last year. I would say that Peter and Joe were probably the least demanding and low-key of all the musicians I've worked with here. Very nice guys who didn't ask for much and had great turnouts for their appearances. In other words, I've got nothing but good things to say about either one of them.

Oh, and their music is good too.
