Topic: new pedal

my heading down to my local samash store tommorow and was wonderin what pedal my help me get Joe tone.  i know that i wont get it exactly, but something close to his Cat5 sound.  My amp is a hotrod deluxe.

Re: new pedal

No one pedal is going to give you Joe's sound.  Are you kidding.  Just crank your amp and play a decent guitar.  Add some delay/reverb, maybe an overdrive pedal.  Check out some videos online about Joe gear or check out his pedal board.  Joe's sound isn't from one pedal.  He has 4 amps on stage, numerous pedals, and unbelieveable talent.

Re: new pedal

And a lot of his tone comes from just cranking the amp.

Re: new pedal

okay, let me rephrase.  what pedal (outside of a tubescreamer, i just want other options) would be able to drive my amp harder to get some more  gain because with hi Cat5 he uses a few different pedals to add gain.

Re: new pedal

From What I have seen Joe use, he has a fuzzface, a tube screamer, and aclean boost(name escapes me).  He only uses the fuzzface with the Cat5.  The Cat5 is a pretty clean amp up to about 7 on the dial, then it starts to overdrive.  A lille boost in front of it sends it over the top and it gets real thick and creamy.  Joe runs delay on the Jubalee all the time, so a delay pedal would help get you into Joe tone.  What amp do you currently use?

OK see the hot rod deluxe.  If you want it to sound more like the cat5, then a zen box of rocks, or something that silmulates a plexi tone is need first, then you can add boosts on top of that.  The fuzz face might get you there if the deluxe is cranked to 10.

Re: new pedal

My Motion Sound came in on mail plane last week and I'm really enjoying the heck outta that rotary speaker; sounds better to me than any pedal; I feel the sound waves, ha ha.

SRV-212, $809 from Sweetwater and they split the shipping to rural AK, unbelieveable.

It actually sounds better thru TRRI custom 15 than Bruno Cowtipper, never would have believed that. I was kicking around dumping the TRRI half price cause it hasn't been kicked on over last year, now TRRI has a home.  Speaker box, 2- 12 screaming eagles; pretty lush sounding to say the least; even wifey (who hates gear) concurs so you know it does sound sweet.

Nx time you all see one used or cheap, check it out.

Just wondering - why do you want to sound like Joe?  Yeah he's got a great sound, but go for your own - you'll see that you enjoy playing much more when you stop chasing one guitarist's tone and just be yourself - find your own tone... go to the store and try out as many pedals as you can - get the one that speaks to you that you think "I can do something with this."  Don't get a pedal for the sake of sounding like someone else - get a pedal for the sake of sounding like yourself.

Re: new pedal

So much of Joe's tone starts out with the amp cranked for the natural overdriven tube sound....then he uses ODs (TS-9 / Carl Martin etc)for that extra umph and sustain.  Joe's "sound" is due to Joe....his vibrato and his amazing right hand muting which makes his playing cleaner than just about any player ever in the rock/blues genre. Joe's playing is cleaner above the 12th fret than anyone I've ever heard....most players you just wait for the clam once they get up there in the Hinterlands....not Joe.

All pedals react differently with different amps....the TS-9 just happens to sound good with many more amps than most pedals...and if are things you don't like about it's tone you can send it off to guys like Robert Keeley and he'll tweak it for you...more bottom...less mids...more gain etc.  I'm a big proponent of the small boutique builders...as long as the prices are reasonable. Searching for the mystic OD pedal is part of the fun. If you want  lots of info pedals or amps I'd suggest checking out

EBAY is good if you can take the suspense of maybe not winning. I've gotten lots of great deals on EBAY of lesser known pedals. Re: new pedal

thanks.  its not so much that i want his exact sound as a sound that has clearity and sustain like his.  must of the time my amp has nice chord definition but not enough sustain and joe has both.

Re: new pedal

A good alternative to the tube screamer might be an Xotic BB Preamp.  I have never tried one, I dont believe Joe has ever used one but I have heard nothing but great things about them and they have great reviews.  Maybe give it a shot.

Re: new pedal

Just go in there and find a set up similar to what you have at home and play through various overdrives and fuzz pedals.  Find the one that best suits your taste and budget and call it a day.    On certain amps, a Boss SD-1 will sound great and they are very cheap in cost.  On others, they dont.

OR, what you could do, is look into either building your own (if you have electronics experience) or buy a stock one and have it modded it up to your liking.

Re: new pedal

I really like the Visual Sound Jekyll & Hyde pedal. It has two buttons allowing a tube screamer style overdrive and a Marshall style distortion and you can mix and match.  Also if you add these sounds with a tube screamer you can get some great tones.

Re: new pedal

MI-Audio TubeZone.... a superb pedal, very very tweakable and tube sounding, main reason I like it is that it cleans up beautifully from the guitar volume, without losing the 'tube' sound.
