Topic: Everything dies baby, that's a fact..

...but maybe everything that dies some day comes back.

Possibly my all time favorite line from my all time favorite Boss song, though of course many others have also given me great joy, pleasure and comfort. I've been meaning to start this topic for ages already, so here goes.

Bruce has been my main man for most of the last 30 years or so. I vividly remember the Rolling Stone cover announcing "I have seen the future of rock n' roll and his name is Bruce Springsteen", which must have been somewhere around '74/'75. I liked enough from his early albums to 'have to be' present at his first European gig, the truly legendary Hammersmith Odeon show in '75. I was totally blown away, as was everyone lucky enough to be there. I can only compare the degree to which I was knocked out and instantly 'sold' on him with my reaction to first seeing Joe!

Exhibit one, with possibly the finest piano intro ever - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwBGSS63B2o

I was also a Nils Lofgren fan right from the early days of Grin, so you can easily imagine how deeply impressed I was by the fact that he was willing to give up what I thought was a very promising career, to be Bruce's lead guitarist!

I've been lucky enough to see him about six times since then, the majority of which were in the 70's and 80's. The gap between the last two times I saw him was 19 years - between 1988 and last year, when I saw him here in the Gelredome stadium in Arnhem - the ticket cost more than what I've paid to see Joe three times!

Here's the point I'm coming to - the vast majority of what he played was, not surprisingly, from his latest cd, Magic. As much as I enjoyed the experience, as good as both he and the E St. Band still are, I nevertheless came away slightly disappointed. My question to others who have been into his music for a long time is, has the final decline set in? Do others feel, like I do, that his greatest songs are ones from decades ago? Nothing from Magic features among my personal favorites.

I'll start the ball rolling with three of my top favorites, all of which I have loved since I first heard them, though I can now also connect parts of each to events in my life during the past year, making them even more meaningful to me.

George..I've been a fan since the 'Born....' album. Then went back and bought everything that went before. I saw The Boss at Wembley Stadium on the 'Born...' tour and that was really something but I think he kind of eased off the throttle over recent years. BUT!!!!!.....I love the last album....I think he's back on form again. I know it ain't 'The River' or 'Thunder Road' but things have to change....I'd pay my hard earned to see him in concert and there ain't many I'd do that for nowadays.

never grow old, never ever die young

What a video! I love YOU TUBE! Bruce is the Boss!

What an epic artist and as others have already said, how many superstars would even think of busking in the street. Class.

Bruce has been one of my favorites since Geeting from Ashbury Park. I really enjoy his earlier work . Bruce has written tons of great songs. I haven't heard his latest Magic. His last few releases didn;t do much for me. They were good but nothing became a new favorite. I hope his best years aren't in the past.
People do change, the fire maybe an ember these days.

Nils Lofgren has been my favorites since Grin as well. I finally show Nils live about 4 years ago after a 25 years. I'm glad Nils has kept a solo career going when not touring or recording with Bruce. I never understood why Nils never really made it big. He is a class act, great song writer, singer guitar wizard and plays a mean keyboard as well.   In fact I have all of Nils releases incluing Grin but not all of Bruce's. I do have most of the early Bruce CD's.

Posted the shorter version in my first post, but this intro is awesome beyond words, it builds up for just over three minutes to one of the greatest guitar openings. Full volume recommended. cool

Living in New Jersey kinda makes you OD on Bruce. But it was definetly pretty cool growing up in our area when alot of "Jersey" acts ( Bruce, Bon Jovi, Southside Johnny, etc) were really making it big. These were bands that you could see at any given time "down the shore."
I think that alot of Jersey-ans  were disappointed with alot of Bruce's newer stuff after he started getting a little "too" political with things around here.  Nothing wrong with activism, its just not what people were paying money for when buying his albums.
On another note... I was also at the Wembley show in England while on a pass from the Army when I was stationed in Germany during the Born tour. I bought a "Born in the USA" lighter while there.  I then proceeded to trade it to an East German border guard while I was on border patrol for his Deutche Democratic Republik (sp?)  lighter which I still have.

Do Yourself a favor and look up Pete Yorn

He's a Jersey guy and has great music... even covers some Boss - definitely a big influence.
he has an acoustic version of Dancing In The Dark thats really good too...

his live cd has an Atlantic City excerpt in it -
really good music. highly recommended.

A Saturday morning smile for George: Rolling Stone "Best of Rock 2008" issue named Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band as the "Best Live Band"...Guess you better try to catch a show this time around my friend!  How after four decades? Bruce says "For a lot of our fans  part of the thing is when the world's falling apart, we're not. That's why people come to see us"       Born in the USA, Cathy
