Topic: My son is copying even the sour notes Joe plays...

As I have said before I have a very gifted guitar playing 11-year old son at home, and yesterday he sat almost the whole day copying Bonamassa songs much to my satisfaction.
But what shall I do with a kid that even copy the mistake that Joe does? Oh, yes, even if Joe's the best guitar player in this world right now he plays a few sour notes now and then like in the beginning of Lie #1. My son claims it's a perfect note out of tune but I would prefer him playing it right...

It's a crazy world we're living in, and I guess I am one of the most screwed up persons living here...

Evey mother wants and expects perfection from her child - especially if he's a boy! Let the boy be, Sune. Let him enjoy everything in his own way as long as it causes no harm to him or to others.

(Though I can't believe that Joe ever plays a wrong note!)  *wink*

the great thing about music nobodies ever perfect and error free its what makes it interesting smile At least thats what I was always taught at school thats why you can never do what Joe and co, do on computers.

Wait I'm confused...are you mother or father, firstly?
and he's 11...copping Joe licks, secondly?

Whatever...does he clean his room?  lol  EDITZ:  That's a story on its own.

I like the use of the word "sour" to describe notes that are off pitch!  Hey Sune sour notes can be useful to add a bit of flavour.

They are not sour (don't like that term) or wrong notes....merely 'passing' notes smile

That's right! My first guitar instructor (Jazz guy), gave me the best advice. Even if you hit a bad note, just slide it up or down 1 fret. Your never more than one fret off! Then you didn't hit a bad note, you hit a passing note!

Re: My son is copying even the sour notes Joe plays...

It´s great your standing on my son's side, well so do I. As a father (not mother) I will back him up as much as I can (off course).
He´s copying Bonamassa yes, but it's harder to make him clean up his room, well he did this weekend when I unplugged his guitar pod for a while.
He's a good kid, and I'm very proud of him. I will not let him quit school, he's too bright for that, and I will let him play as many "passing" notes as he likes. smile
And your right, a "passing" note makes the difference between a human and a computer, even if you can do that on a computer nowadays too... smile

It's funny he normally corrects me when I play what I say a "passing note" or a blues note by using the same words as you mention. Then he show me "the right" passing note and I have to agree with him... all the time.

You seems like a great bunch of people here. I'm really glad I found this forum!

Re: My son is copying even the sour notes Joe plays...

I had to read this thread because I never heard of such a thing - Joe Bonamassa have a bad/sour note?  News to me.  smile  As I don't play guitar myself, I really don't notice any sour notes - it all sounds good to me.  And I would imagine (again, not a musician, just an appreciater) that playing a sour note leads to experimenting with one's own style/sound... something like "oh, i played that note incorrectly, but hey it sounds better than the original".  Just a thought.

By the way, I too have an imperfect son.  My son says "Massama" instead of Bonamassa.  But I cut him some slack because he's 17 months old and really it's incredible that in his vocabulary of 40 or so words he attempts to say Bonamassa... and Massama is quite a few syallbles for one so little.  And yes, I was being scarcastic about him being imperfect - he is perfection.  As I'm sure your 11 year old is!  Even if he doesn't clean his room often or he chooses to play JB's sour notes smile
