Topic: PRS with soapbars

I just bought my son his birthday present.  We found a PRS mahogany double cutaway with 2 P90s in it.  What an amazingly well built guitar for the price and it sounds better than the model with Humbuckers.  He is normally rather stoic, but when he mounted the steps to his dorm he grinned at me, thanked me profusely, and said, "I gots bragging rights now."  I cracked up!

I felt good about that because he sometimes feels poor because of college kids with Audis & Beamers.  But they don't have that badazz axe!  lol

Humbuckers and single coils

They look kind of like humbuckers (les paul), but sound kind of like single coils (strat), or like a combination of the two types. I'm simplifying things a bit, but I think that's kind of the idea. Here's an example (may be Jeff's guitar?)

And here's an excellent article about the history of soapbar pickups and even has sound clips of a PRS with soapbars.

Yes that's the one, the tobacco sunburst.  If you play with it you can get a growly, robust tone that's cutting and bright, but not tinny.  Very articulate.  I hit a chord and can hear all six notes.  VERY EASY TO PLAY.  Much better deal (for us) than the Epis.  My SG is roachy sounding but not as easy to play.  I'm not smart enough to figure out why. wink

Hey thats a pretty sweet guitar man!:P

Re: PRS with soapbars

Guitar Player Magazine listed it as one of the best guitars under $500 a few issues back. From what I remember of the article, I think they liked it the best of the guitars they had reviewed.

Re: PRS with soapbars

If they had a greenburst - Id get one.

P-90 soapbars do sound awesome.
