Re: Mayer - Trucks - Frusciante JAM

cool video, good players, trucks in particular to me, but to me it's a shame these guys get so much publicity whilst so many others are almost completely unknown.

Very cool video.  I'm a huge fan of Derek Trucks.  It would be a dream come true for me to see Joe and Derek jam.  Maybe someday.

Yeah Susan, I'm a huge fan of Derek Trucks too. The guy has so much soul in what he plays......I think he deserves every ounce of recognition.....one of the most talented guitarists on the planet as far as I'm concerned.

It's not their fault. These guys are good at what they do. What they get is absolutely deserved. It's like how many great guitar players have gone unnoticed while the likes of Clapton, Hendrix, Vaughan, Van Halen have garnered so much attention? They don't deserve it any less, but a lot of great players have gone unnoticed. Just the way it goes: some players get all the attention and accolades, while a lot don't.

Here is a great interview with Derek Trucks and the band.   What a smooth guitarist!

Smooth guitarist and one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet.  Ken and I first saw him play when he was that kid in the baseball cap. (12 years old).  I got a chance to tell him about that when we recently saw him play in Orlando.  So far, besides Joe, he's one of the few guys I'll travel to far to see play.  He'll be playing the Wanee Music Festival in Live Oak next month with the Allman Brothers and doing his Soul Stew Revival gig with Susan Tedeschi.  I'm not gonna be able to make it because we'll be at the Tampa Bay Blues Festival (also a lot of talent) but that should be one heck of a show.

Re: Mayer - Trucks - Frusciante JAM

i stand by what i said.  there are far better players out there that frusciante who most don't even know.  i believe that once you get to a certain point with an instrument, no one is better than anyone else.  from there it is all style.  i don't think frusciante is there, mayer is close but not quite.  trucks is there. and i am not an authority on thise sort of thing but i think all the other names mentioned here were.  im just saying im not the authority on guitar gods.  but what im also saying is neither is rolling stone, and my list would be different.  i am entitled to my opinion and i ask no one to agree with it.  make your own.

I really like all three here, they are all good at what they do, I especially like Mayer, if you don't know why go and listed to his songs & his playing them. His playing is always understated yet he is incredibly inventive, try listening to 'slow dancing in a burning room" then try and play it, its not played how you 'think' its played and when you figure it out you realise the feel of the song is partly as a result of the way he played it. I rate Mayer as one of the best singer/songwriters of our time ... and he's only just getting started. Trucks is a phenomenal slide player and you 'have' to take Fruscianti in the context of the Chillis, the chillis are greater than the sum of their parts.

I don't think anyone is less deserving because there is someone better somewhere else, you make your own way in this world ... the best guitarists there has ever been may well have gone to his/her grave completely unknown.... 'cos he/she never played outside his/her bedroom. That's how life is.

Re: Mayer - Trucks - Frusciante JAM

John F didn't do a lot in the video, and JM took over much of the conversation - although he was right about DT sounding like a 50's female pop star with infinite range...

Frusciante is amazing, he's just not one to get out there and go LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME. Remember, he's not even technically the lead guy in his band (Flea). Just because Joe isn't more popular isn't a reason to get on these guys. I've said this many times, and I'll put it out again: If you have to bring down other artists to make another look good, then that makes that artist look worse.
