Topic: Joe in Glasgow - the best and the rest!

Thursday night was my first Joe gig, and as promised her are my thoughts on the evening. I'd bought my ticket for Joe in October last year and the end of February seemed such a long time to wait but finally here was the evening I'd been waiting for.

The Arches as it sounds is a hall of several arches under the main railway station in Glasgow. When we entered the stage was set up at the end of the central arch. We had arrived at around 7.30 as I'd read from the reviews of Leeds Joe had started at 8 as his support act was ill.  The venue was already pretty busy and excitement grew as we saw a roadie placing 4 bottles of water on the stage, indicating that Joe and the band were shortly to come on. Then to hugh cheers Joe's band and finally the man himself came on to play the set as listed below.

Full set list:
Bridge To Better Days
Walk In My Shadows
So Many Roads
Mountain Time
Another Kind Of Love
Sloe Gin
Ballpeen Hammer
Don't Burn Down That Bridge
Woke Up Dreaming
Django
Just Got Paid
One Of These Days
Asking Around For You
Highwater Everywhere
You Upset Me

By Mountain Time I'd decided to move from my position midway through the venue and get a better look, and managed to get myself a metre or so from the stage. The intro to that song was spine tingling.
I was pleased to get some good photos and took some videos of Another Kind Of Love, Woke Up Dreaming and Just got Paid.

The balance between the instruments sounded just right and Joe played a fine set that I think would have left most people extremely happy. I really enoyed the new groove on Don't Burn Down That Bridge, and Joe does sound as good live as on record. Do you sence a "but" coming?

There were long periods of instrumentation where I feel another song or two could have been played. In particular I have to say that I think one or two rockier songs would have enhanced the evening. The crowd were pretty static and I think a track such as Taking A Hit, Cradle Rock or Burning Hell may have livened the set. To my ears You Upset Me Baby is not the right final track, I would have preferred a harder hitting finale. Also I do not know why Dirt In My Pocket is not played, it is the strongest track on Sloe Gin and would have been a joy to hear live. Sorry if this sounds like nit picking but that's just my opinion.

Other issues I will mention is that as Joe's support act was ill, and as he had missed a date two day's earlier, there was time for Joe's management and the venue to have arranged an alternative support act to  be on standby should they been needed. It would have been a good opportunity for a local act to get some exposure. Also with people travelling from places such as Aberdeen to see Joe an 8 o'clock start was too early for some who missed the start of his set.

My other disappointment was with the t-shirts, I so wanted to have a souvenir but could not bring myself to purcahse any of these shirts. There were three on sale - one with the cover of Sloe Gin - yet on the back, not the front, another with a curly haired guitarist who me and my friend both thought looked far more like Jimmy Page! The third had a cartoon picture of Joe with bright red shoulder lenght hair, and on the back listed Cardiff England among the venues (Glasgow was in Scotland). but someone has not done their homework with the research and the designs were poor. Wish I could have taken the "You & Me" shirt I saw someone wearing instead!

I did enjoy seeing Joe, love his music and would definately see him again, but as an overall experience I would have to rate the concert at 7.5 out of ten, which is a slight disappointment as I so wished to give ten out of ten!

I would ask if others share my opinion of the setlist, the timing and the t-shirts. We are all fans of Joe and want to making seeing Joe the best experience it can be, which is why I felt it was neccesary to share all my feelings from that evening.

Greenose...That's a very thoughtful review and thanks for the pics and video..The set list doesn't tend to change..Just the way Joe does it. There are many here who never got to see some of the "older" songs performed live. I guess Joe played them for so many years he's tired of them? Crosby Loggins is on Joe's label..I don't know what the rules are concerning changes. I understand why people would be upset with an earlier start time and really can't say much more about that. Shirts are for sale at the store on this site. Others have gotten older shirts from e-bay....I know you are a fan. Your criticisms are valid and do matter. At least there's a world of Joe CD's and DVD's to supple all musical needs.   Cathy

Re: Joe in Glasgow - the best and the rest!

Please let me clarify, at no point in my review did I say Joe or his playing was poor in any way.
Shame that idiots like you have to let down peoples opinions of Glasgow with stupid comments like that!

Greenose...Don't worry. We don't think badly about any place just because of 1 person with bad manners. You help to prove the point. Criticism based on your experience and personal opinions are welcomed. It's just that there's a right and a wrong way of doing it. Cathy

Greenose, I thought the review was well written and the gripes were stated in an inteligent constructive manner. As Joe would say "If you can't say it don't write it" I believe you would of been able to say those things to Joe and He would want to hear.

Re: Joe in Glasgow - the best and the rest!

Hi Greenose,

Great review, thanks. My wife and I went to the Morecambe gig the next night and if she did have one criticism it was that she would have preferred to have heard more songs too.

As she said to me, his playing is astounding but as someone who isn't into musical technique and ability too much, there were long extended solo's that weren't really her cup of tea!

That said, she does want to go and see him again!

And I agree with your point about the t-shirts, not a great selection or of the highest quality but I did buy one with the Cardiff, England error, just to annoy a Welsh friend of mine!!!!!!

Cheers

Re: Joe in Glasgow - the best and the rest!

Hey Greenose, I was at the Arches gig you got your review spot on including the out of ten, although I love Joe's style and his mastery of the guitar there were far too many long drawn solo's that spoiled the show. The sound where I was standing, ( right at the back) was a bit off at times especially the keyboard, but in looking round the guys on the desks were damn near motionless all night and looked as though they couldn't care less about the sound.
I too would have liked to have heard songs like "Burning hell" just to get the crowd lifted a bit.

All in all a pretty satisfactory gig and the bad issues won't put me off going to see him again but I'd prefer to see him in a tighter venue and ditch the keyboards.

Re: Joe in Glasgow - the best and the rest!

I can understand everyone's point of view about this, and that's the point, we are all different and have subjective views of what Joe should play. You'll notice that the album versions of the songs are not mirrored in the live performances - indeed Mountain Time is just such a song that you are probably referring to, re the long solos. That song on the album does not have the intro or finale that Joe gives us at the shows, yet it is the emotion of this version of Mountain Time with the long solos that often brings people to tears and gets them cheering for more. It's a fact that you can't please all people, but it seems pretty clear to me, having seen Joe's popularity grow that he is on the right track. Let's face it, there are some people who would not go see Joe again unless he was back with Kenny and Eric. On the subject of sound quality, this must be a nightmare to tote gear around the country / world and come up with the best sound you can get at each venue, whether it's solid sandstone bridge arches under a station, a concert hall or a bus station like Pacific Road. I've seen a fair few of Joes gigs now and I could pick technical holes in lots of things, but hey, it's a great night out, the craik's good, the crowd are usually up for it and Joe and the guys, including Dave, Aaron et al are a thoroughly nice bunch of guys, who clearly are enjoying themselves too - what could be better?

Re: Joe in Glasgow - the best and the rest!

A matter of personal taste ... but I'll take quality over quantity any days - The Robin2 set list list was pretty much the same as yours and EACH and EVERY solo was perfectly carved from the finest Blue Rock... Sure, over-long and self gratifying solos can be an absolute PITA .... but I heard none that night

Incidentally the same Robin2 doesn't have the best rep for great sound BUT they excelled themselves on that night IMHO

Re: Joe in Glasgow - the best and the rest!

I wonder if the instrumental portions were extended a bit on this show due to Joe being sick. I thought I read earlier that everyone had gotten sick early in the tour and were having a tough time getting over it.

As hard as Joe sings, that would have to be miserable. So it could be normal and someone trying to "fit it in a box" or it might be some of both.

Many people keep trying to put Joe Bonamassa in a little box (style) that fits in their closet (world). The Blues purists say he's too far away to be considered Blues. The Rock purists say he needs to do more Rock tunes because he's getting too far away. Has anyone thought that Joe fits into no style other than his own? Maybe we're all witnessing something very special. Well, I think we all know that already, but what I'm referring to is something beyond very special. Something new that can't be labeled. Can Joe play Blues? Just check out the song "Blues Deluxe". Can Joe play Rock? Go check out "Cradle Rock". Can Joe play a song that grabs you by the pit of your stomach and makes you want to weep everytime you hear it for it's sheer beauty? Then listen to "Mountain Time" done live.

I'll say this, Joe is so beyond many of the musical artists today, that he's setting a new standard in music. I think Carmine Rojas summed it up the best when he said after The Coach House Show in San Juan Capistrano. He said, "Joe plays from the heart!" And folks, regardless of what we want Joe to play or sound like just remember, he fits no mold and whatever mold was used to make Joe Bonamassa will never be used again. Just like Stevie's and just like Rory's.

Roy

How right you are Brother Roy!!

Me and my Dad were just talking about this last night. He's just one of those very special individuals that appear once in a generation if we're very lucky. Let's just embrace that and not worry bout the pigeon-holing and molding!!

Roy Doggone you, for all of our silly BS, You and I are...um, I dunno.  For years the flame that burned in me was/is to create a melting of the walls between musical tastes.  I love that R&B bottom, that funk, that soul, that grease.  I love more hip shaking, less head banging music.  I disrespect no rockers, Rock on & keep the faith.  Carmine is my brother for many years, he's much more of a rocker than I am in many ways.

But I love guitar, (though not many guitar players,) but flamenco, picking, power crunches, slide & BLUES guitar rocks me to my soul.  What a rush to have it hit this tired old man in a blur after reading your post, why this young man (JoeB) gives me hope.

That he fits no mold resonates with me to my molars.  I FEEL THIS BAND!  Rick is a funkmiester, bar none.  Carmine is a genius, musically(can't spell big_smile).  Bogie is a rok solid heartbeat of power.  Joe is forging his own way, professionally with more grace than there are words for.

I will do the same in my little world.  I've been away too long from the music BIZ.  This county needs me.  How's that for egomania?

Yeah Phil, Joe puts everything behind in his singing, and if you are getting over a sinus infection or whatever that has to be tough.  Whatever Joe does, he is going to give it his best for sure...

Re: Joe in Glasgow - the best and the rest!

Hi Jane H.

I was at the show in Morecambe the night after Glasgow and yes it was the Woke Up Dreaming solo that was extended and did incur some barracking from certain brain dead quarters! I agree that a shorter solo would have been better with another song added to set, but hey, Joe's the boss!!!

Cheers
Sharant

Re: Joe in Glasgow - the best and the rest!

Thanks all for your contributions to this discussion. I wasn't referring to Mountain Time, Woke Up Dreaming was probably too long - incidently my video - address on 1st post above is probably where I would like the song to have finished. Also Joe started some fiddly solos on You Upset Me, which were perhaps unneccessary. These are small moans though, I was delighted to see Joe and will definately see him again although I think he will need a larger venue - the ABC in Glasgow should be the right size.
