Topic: Winwood/Clapton at MSG

I couldn't find that other thread...I'm getting really excited!!!
The British Are Coming!!!  The British Are Coming!!!

Cool interview..can someone tell me how play the YouTube from Steve winwood's site and NOT hear the background song at the same time, since its the same song...out of sync...thanks
http://www.stevewinwood.com/

The gent did make a correction for the typo of Gregg meaning Duane...I got this off the Clapton site

"Dirty City feat. Eric Clapton
by Bob Lefsetz

Clapton and Winwood are hitting the stage at Madison Square Garden Monday night.
Would I have a problem being there? Not at all. But I did see Blind Faith,
back in '69, the first time around, before the record even came out. I've got a
tape of the show on my wall. If I try to play it, it'll probably fall apart.
But I still play the cuts from the first side of that record, primarily "Can't
Find My Way Home". Have you seen Winwood perform "Can't Find My Way Home"
recently in clubs? That's where you've been able to catch him, playing music
from his last studio release, "About Time", as well as so many classics. But
the classics are the frosting, it's when he plays the new material that you ooh
and ahh. Well, except for when he catches fire on "Dear Mr. Fantasy". Amazing
he can spit out those notes, since he's most famous for playing the Hammond
organ.

Steve Winwood went indie before the rest of his brethren. But rather than do a
deal with Wal-Mart, or some newspaper, he went with the outfit responsible for
the String Cheese Incident, Madison House. The match wasn't perfect. Because
Winwood isn't indie enough, not musically. He just wanted to try something new,
unburdened by the bullshit of the commercial system. And whether or not the
experiment succeeded financially, musically...it was a triumph.

Is "Dirty City" the triumph of "About Time"? Unfortunately, no. It doesn't
test limits so much as tread familiar territory. It's "Shoot Out At The Fantasy
Factory" to "Low Spark Of High Heeled Boys". Not classic, but something we
played the grooves out of anyway.

I want you to do me a favor. Go to http://www.stevewinwood.com/ Wait a second,
until the music begins to play. And let it play. It goes on for almost eight
minutes, and it's not until about four minutes in that the track gets really
great.

Oh, a groove is laid down. Steve's smoky pipes testify to the fact that he's
lost not a single step. And the guitar has that edgy, electric feel that
permeated the late sixties and early seventies. And there's the Latin
percussion, that was evidenced on all those Traffic albums. The words are even
good. But then, at 4:15, Little Stevie starts sitting on the organ keys. The
rhythm changes, he almost starts to scat. You feel your blood start to pulse.
You're getting ready to give him all your lovin'. Then, at 5:40, this guitar
starts flying in atop the entire number. Like you're sitting at Santa Monica
Airport, and all of a sudden a Gulfstream descends from the clouds and DEMANDS
your attention!

That Gulfstream, that electric guitar, belongs to none other than ERIC CLAPTON!
And he's wailing in an inspired way that mesmerizes you just like when you heard
him with John Mayall, when he was supporting Jack Bruce, when he was playing
with Delaney & Bonnie all those years ago. Eric's gone on record that he wanted
to join the Band, that he wanted to be a sideman after the Blind Faith debacle,
and listening to this you can understand why. When the spotlight's not on him,
when he no longer has to carry the weight, when he's unfettered, he can FLY!

Guitarwork isn't about razzle-dazzle, otherwise Yngwie Malmsteen would be God.
It's about how it affects you. And when you hear Eric Clapton backing up Stevie
Winwood here, you're reminded of all those nights at the Fillmore, when the song
was just the blueprint, a place to jump from.

Eric did his best work collaborating with Gregg Allman. He's returned to form
here. But credit Winwood for inspiring him. Jerry Garcia and the Dead might
get all the credit as the progenitors of the jam band scene, but you can't deny
the influence of the Englishmen, who filtered Delta blues into something new,
into rock and roll.

These players might be aged, but this is not history, this is brand new. You'll
be sitting in front of your computer thinking there's nothing special about the
track, and then, just as your mind starts to drift, pondering what you're going
to have for dinner, you will be called to attention. You will be made to PAY
attention. By the incredible interplay of these musicians. This isn't about
fame, this isn't about money, this is a calling, imbued with a religious fervor
that makes us believers."

Re: Winwood/Clapton at MSG

That's beautiful Angela! Clapton and Winwood together at Crossroads was magic! And, even though I saw Steve in Florida a few years ago, I had forgotten what a great guitar player he is! I'm excited for you! It will be all that you dream! Can't wait to hear about it!        Cathy

Re: Winwood/Clapton at MSG

Angela,

Here are your instructions:

Go onto the stevewinwood website.  Let the music started playing.  In the upper left corner of the webpage, you should see the music controls (a volume bar, etc.).  Just hit the pause button.  I had to hit it twice.  It should stop the music.  Then you can go on to view the youtube video on the same page and not be annoyed with two pieces of music playing at the same time.  Okay?  Enjoy.

So, does that mean you get to see one of the Madison Square Garden shows?  I've wondered if it is a smashing success (how couldn't it be?), if they'll consider expanding the tour and hitting a lot of cities.  We will see Mr. Winwood open for Tom Petty late this summer and were lucky enough to see Mr. Clapton last spring, but, the two of them together.......OMG.......that would, indeed, be something else.  I'm excited for anyone who gets to see that show.

Re: Winwood/Clapton at MSG

Angela, soak up every glorious and rockin' moment of the show if you are going.  I am sooo excited for you.  What an awesome opportunity to see Steve and Eric live play together again.  WOW, that is just mind blowing thinking about it.  Loved watching them play them together at Crosswords on the DVD.  Have you read Eric's book?  If you haven't, I read in Eric's book that he actually wrote, In the Presence of the Lord and did not want to sing it so Steve sang it.  He wrote that song about his estate Hurtwood.  What a simply beautiful song!!!  Would love to hear a full review of the show.  Thanks for posting that review and have an amazing time at MADISON SQUARE GARDEN.

                                                     Barbara...............:)

Re: Winwood/Clapton at MSG

Thank ladies for the feedback...Libby, I don't think I've ever officially welcomed you, WELCOME and thanks for the instructions.  Are there 2 Libby's here now? I think Stevie's voice sounds as good as ever and I just LOVE these guys, I've started listening to them right after my initial love for the Beatles set in.  I have this double vinyl album that just says WINWOOD going back to Spencer Davis, just wore it out....love the organ and percussions.  Barbara, read the book, it was great...the Presence story I didn't know before as well.  Cool stuff!  My brother got us tickets for Tom Petty/Winwood, I'm glad to have his connection for the big arenas because I'm not always so lucky w/ticketmaster.  His law firm has box seats for sporting events, if he requests tickets before they go on sale to the public, he can get them...he's taking the summer associates & added 2 for us.  It looks like Winwood is the warm-up for Petty, not sure, but interesting...Petty is more popular mainstream...Winwood gives a phenomenal performance, saw him last a few years back in Atlantic City from the first row for 2/3rds of the show, everyone was on their feet for "I'm A Man" and he just really mixed up the setlist great, from all his eras...Dear Mr. Fantasy...I never got the full story on the demise between him and Dave Mason, but its a shame....I get the feeling Dave isn't always easy to get along with.

Anyway, my favorite American guitarist is pleasing the Brits and now two of my favorite Brits are coming to MSG, can't wait!!  smile smile smile This is a link to the guy that wrote the above article.

Re: Winwood/Clapton at MSG

Angela,

Oh my, you are lucky, indeed!

Thank you for the welcome!  Yes, there are two Libby's now....I only recently joined the fun, but, as you can see, I've been quite the busy little participant!  Cheshire_Lass is the other Libby.....she just joined a few days ago.....a UK fan.  Funny, I told her on her intro page that I was a teenager before I met another Libby, and now, here on this wonderful-world-wide-way of connecting that we're lucky enough to experience, we're chatting with each other about Joe!!!

I am VERY much looking forward to Stevie Winwood/Tom Petty, although, it will be in a rather large amphitheater, and, I'm afraid we don't have any connections for great seats.....we're a few rows in front of the lawn.  Oh well, you can't always get what you want, right? smile  I really wanted to see Stevie at this upcoming show, but, I must tell you, we saw Tom Petty a few years ago and he does put on a really fun show.  I haven't seen a lot of performers with the ability to connect so with large audiences.  We were surprised at how much we enjoyed him last time.  I'm most anxious to hear Stevie though....."I'm A Man" has always been an all-time favorite of mine.

Hubby and I saw Dave Mason a few months ago - John Mayall opened for him.  Strange what happens with headliners and openers, isn't it?  We preferred Mr. Mayall - Dave Mason's sound was uncomfortably (literally) LOUD.  Also, Mr. Mayall, I must say, was SUPER SWEET -we met with him before and after his performance - VERY down to earth and we had a very tender moment regarding my Mom who'd just had cancer surgery.  After our chat, when I was looking elsewhere, he slyly autographed a baseball cap, handed it to me, and said, quietly, "Here.....for your Mum".  Made me cry.  We're going to see him again at The Coach House in April.  Very small venue....should be able to tell him how much she's loved her cap!!!!

I gave my husband the Clapton book for Christmas - he's read it 2 or 3 times now.  Just can't get enough.  That was also the impetus for the Amazon buying frenzy we've been on ever since......deep, deep into the roots of the blues.  We've always had a great music collection, but now, it's getting to be like a serious reference library!!!  As I said somewhere else on the forum....didn't surprise me at all that Amazon announced recently that their profits had doubled last quarter!!!

Enjoy the show for the rest of us mortals Angela!

Re: Winwood/Clapton at MSG

Hi Libby,
What a nice story about John Mayall, that's just great!!!  smile In the Atlantic City House of Blues, they have a bust of John Mayall in a showcase about the history of the blues. The last time I saw Dave Mason, another round of shows was announced with John Mayall, but I already had the first round, so I didn't buy another set...I hate when that happens. I wonder if something was off with the venue you saw Dave in, I never observed him to be too loud. The last time Tom Petty was in town, the Allman Brothers were the warm-up band.  I only have the seat connection for the big arena in Philly and they are not on the floor, up one level left side, but has its own bar and bathrooms and seems to be better than what I can get when I go online.  My last ticketmaster frustration was purchasing Ron White tickets.  I didn't know up front that American Express Gold cards got preference, it wasn't announced anywhere in advance, got decent seats without the Gold, fine for comedy...

I only heard the name Libby one other time ever, someone also into music, she's a piano teacher!

Re: Winwood/Clapton at MSG

Angela,

I'm dyin' to hear how it was!!!!

Meanwhile, a few responses to your last post.

I don't know what was up with the sound when we saw Dave Mason.  As I mentioned, John Mayall opened for him and the sound was perfect.  When Dave took the stage something was off.....some penetrating electrical thing......like it was gonna disturb the rhythm of my heartbeat or something.....and NOT in a good way.  Do you know what I mean?  Whatever it was, it wasn't good.  I know I wasn't the only one experiencing it.....people were muttering.....my husband says that maybe we were caught in the wrong part of a sound wave.....hmmm.....that's not woo-woo talk, he's quite the scientist.  Anyway, I should have said something to the guys at the soundboard maybe.

We saw the Allman Bros. on a warm night in the desert about 15 years ago or so.  Once they hit the stage, the crowd NEVER sat down.  Wow.  They were great.  I'm vertically challenged, so, I couldn't see a lot over all those heads, but, they sounded FABULOUS!!!

About AMEX, gold and otherwise......I may have to open a thread on that and see whether or not I should try that.  I've been avoiding getting one for decades, but, I do keep hearing the perks are worth it.

I am SO looking forward to hearing how EC and SW were!!!  Do tell!!!

Re: Winwood/Clapton at MSG

I posted this over at the Clapton site, my only other forum I am active on...damn do I have the BEST taste in guitar gods, I am still on cloud 9, a musical nirvana....I've read a few other fans reviews since I posted mine and its cool to know that fans that have seen Clapton perform over 20 times, say he is just in top form for these shows.  Last night was really special...

"I was in attendance on Tuesday night and what a spectacular event from start to finish!! Had To Cry Today was a powerful opener and the momentum never eased up, Stevie and Eric played their hearts out and looked to be having a fabulous time!

Eric performed some amazing guitar solos and at one point my hubby turned to me and said, "that is why Clapton is the best of the best guitarists that plays the blues", Eric seem to genuinely be enjoying himself and when you think about it, on a real long tour of performing the same set list, a musician can become complacent, which of course, since guitar playing is second nature to Eric, it may not be so noticeable, but last night Eric seemed to play with some extra emotion, it was oozing from every crevice...so relaxed and at ease, just letting the natural juices flow and giving his all, if that at all makes sense...I just thought Eric was exceptionally spectacular!!!!! Eric is the most amazing guitarist of all times, its great to see him so comfortable in his own skin these days, it shines through in his performance.

I enjoyed the entire show, but thought the slower, bluesy version of Vodoo Chile was just absolutely, positively incredible...I never heard anyone carry it off so slow and sensuous, it just smoked & sizzled, all s's apply... Jimi was smiling down on that stage last night, no doubt...WOW!! Just BRILLIANT!!!

I thought Stevie was spectacular as well, I LOVE STEVIE...I'm glad he showed off his guitar stuff, so many people never think of him as a guitarist!!! I loved the Blind Faith songs and Eric's singing on Presence was extra special!! Georgia was a nice surprise...I'm lost for any additional adjectives to describe how wonderful it was to see Eric playing & singing in on Traffic songs and Stevie playing and singing Clapton songs...it was surreal...Dear Mr. Fantasy fit the bill...Stevie and Eric go together like peanut butter and jelly!! They blend together so well to make the perfect consistency!!

A forever memorable event of two of my favorite musicians, just AWESOME!!!!!"

Re: Winwood/Clapton at MSG

Thanks for that review and setlist, Angela... sounds like it was magical, and that's a great setlist!

I can hardly wait for tomorrow!  WOO-HOO!!  big_smile

Question for Angela and anyone else who went:  What was security like going in?  I heard people weren't being checked at all.  My friend Keith is a master show-taper and he says when he goes stealth he never gets caught, but if he would get caught going in he'd have to take his equipment the whole way back to the hotel a mile away instead of just out to the car.  He may just decide to skip it so he can concentrate on having a good time, but then again he has new equipment he really should put to use, and what better show to capture.  If he does record, I'll post a link to wherever he uploads it to.

Re: Winwood/Clapton at MSG

Angela, fantastic review!!! Sounds like Steve and Eric where burning up MSG with some of their unbelievably fantastic music.  You are so lucky to have seen them play together.  History in the making for sure and it had to be an absolutely mind blowing experience to be watching them both jam away on their guitars.  Bet you will always fondly remember that show with a smile on your face.  I got the NY Post today to read at lunch and Dan Aquilante in his "rock review" reviewed Monday night's show.  He wrote, Clapton's guitar work was as precise as you'd expect-God doesn't miss notes-Winwood seemed to find blue-eyed gospel inspiration........Clapton, over the course of a two-hour, 20 song show he never faltered, delivering near perfection in his guitar work.  But of course!  He's Eric Clapton."  To have heard Eric Clapton finally sing his song, "Presence of the Lord" would of been AWESOME.  The DVD can't come out soon enough for me.  Again, much thanks for sharing your review with us.

                                                                 Barbara.........:)

Re: Winwood/Clapton at MSG

So, what did you really think Angela smile! Seriously, that was a great review! I'm so wishing we could have been there, but I guess the DVD will have to do.

Re: Winwood/Clapton at MSG

Vikki-I have to tell you, the security was really different.  I carried a backpack since we traveled on the train roundtrip...I had a book, water bottles, binoculars in a case, a small pocketbook and an extra pair of shoes big_smile.  The security gent opened my bag but didn't look around, didn't open the binocular case or my pocketbook or poke around with that long stick they use sometimes, however it was really quick, but he had something small in his hand and it clicked and flashed...I'm not sure if it was something real sophisticated or not or if he picked me out because the backpack was bigger than a pocketbook.  My husband was not asked to empty his pockets or anything.  Lots of Clapton fans posted and took photos and  fans on Winwood's e-mail list were encouraged to send in photos, so the camera part seems allowed.  I can't give you a definite answer on the risk of the recording equipment, but good luck AND I think the last night is gonna' be killer, especially with Wed. being a rest day.  If Thursday worked better with my husband's schedule, I would have picked Thursday or if $$$ was not a concern, I would have gone again.  Let us know if they change up the encore, our encore was Dear Mr. Fantasy...I'm good with fantasy... Have a blast Vikki!!  Roger Waters made an announcement about the very last Dark Side performance, I thought of you...

Libby- I would think Clapton & Winwood will give this another run, I'm not sure when w/Stevie doing the shows w/Tom Petty.  If it happens, I think they'd have to include the UK, some of the fans aren't happy they played the US first. Also, Clapton said he wanted to slow down and in semi-retirement he has done nothing but add shows...Ireland, Denmark, N.Korea in 2009 invited by the ruler and just today this was announced. These are on sale dates, it doesn't say anywhere that its w/Stevie and its not on Steve's site...looks just like Clapton.

ONSALE DATES

3/8- Cleveland
3/8- Boston
3/10- Holmdel
3/10- Wantagh
3/14- Noblesville
3/15- Uncasville

I bought the coolest t-shirt at the show, they had really nice unisex shirts and just one baby doll for the ladies which I bought. Today when I tried it on, it dawned on me that its not a coincidence that it has a ying/yang symbolism...both of their names are side by side in a scrolling fashion placed in a circle in turquoise on a black background.  I just returned a pair of black boots that I got a store credit for, Im going back for the turquoise necklace...:) I wish they had stickers for sale, they are not too pricey and I like to buy them for people who couldn't get to the show, especially my bonabuddies...;)

I have to dig up a past interview where Clapton talks about joining forces with Steve Winwood and performing Georgia On My Mind...something about skinny white boys singing the blues like Ray Charles.
