The question is a bit emotive. It shouldn't be "so you hate all rap artists?", but maybe something like,

'Have you ever discovered anything meaningful, interesting, appealing or moving in rap/hip-hop?"  (ok, it's a bit long, but you get the drift.. and yes, I am either unwilling or unable to differentiate one from the other)

For me, the answer to that is 'no'.

I've had this discussion hundreds of times since the boy started playing Wu Tang Clan in the house 10 years ago or so. I simply don't like the genre, period. It all sounds like irritating 'dreck' to me.

And before I'm accused of having limited taste, my music includes everything from Beethoven, Mozart and Strauss to Zappa, Captain Beefheart, the Velvets, Lou Reed, The Dead, Little Feat, Neil Young, Bruce, Bonnie, Emmylou, the Dixie Chicks, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry, BB King, the Isley Bros, loads of different reggae, Anita Baker.......Joe!!!

I've never felt musically narrow-minded in my life. I know what I like, and rap ain't anywhere near it.

Rant over. big_smile

That's cool. But I will continue to say that Gnarls Barkley is not rap. Far from it. If anything, and their music is really quite hard to categorize, it would fall into the soul/rnb department.

I never heard of Gnarls Barkley till I saw the name in this thread, so my rant was nothing whatsoever to do with that particular difference of opinion. wink

But I felt obliged to check out the links you posted at the top of this page and I have now listened to both of them.

I entirely agree with you. This is not rap. I'm not sure what the hell it is, but I found it pretty interesting and may give the first number another listen........:D

Good for you George. Again, proves labeling an artist can be problematic. This group is labed hip hop/rap. But, having said that I do have some Eminem CD's that I like and he's certainly rap..I was going to call you an old fuddy duddy George, so you saved yourself smile   Cathy

Re: So you hate all rap artists?

hate is a strong word.  some is definitely better than the rest.  however i think none of it is great and would never call it as much.  i feel the same way about punk.

Re: So you hate all rap artists?

Anyone who says rap requires no talent, I challenge you right now: make a good rap song.  Give it your best shot, tell me how it goes. Then try and say its worthless and requires no skill.

Any minute now I'm going write down here some of the **** I bust out with, at home.  The stuff that sends my two youngest (teens) to the floor in hysterics, my oldest into spasms, and my poor wife reaching for her ear plugs.

Re: So you hate all rap artists?

I used to say rap is crap but I'm a little more open-minded now. I like a lot of different stuff, including Gnarls Barkley (Gone Daddy Gone is one of my favorite songs), Soulja Boy, and "Apologize" by Timbaland and One Republic. I'm sure it takes effort to write songs like that (and perform them, too!!) Watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L-ghXSsUuXs

And as for apple bottom jeans...well it is all about apples, so...:)

Re: So you hate all rap artists?

soulja boy?  you have to be kidding me.  normally i keep quiet when people don't share my opinions but it astonishes me someone who has even heard joe bonamassa's name would listen to that garbage.  that **## is a catalyst in keeping today's youth ignorant of real music for their whole lives.  throw that trash in the fire place or better yet the toilet where it belongs.  and as for performing them, you are simply wrong.  a friend of mine once said live perfmances of rap expose it for what it truly is.  if you have ever witness live rap you know what im talking about.  i don't deny some of them have talent, but soulja boy?  really?  uggh i better stop before i get banned.

as for the no talent challenge, take a look at the lyrics of the best selling rap music.  and those beats can be thrown together on a nice keyboard, if you have a sense of rhythym and have ever messed around with expensive musical toys keyboards and drum machines you know EXACTLY what im saying.

I don't like that particular song either, or rap for that matter, but you forget one thing: girls dance to that song. And I like dancing with girls. smile

There my friend....you have now hit the nail on the head......WHAM!

And as history clearly shows, men put up with (and even begin to like/request) things that girls like to dance to. That's how we get drawn in to this web.......

Believe me, my wife and I share an iPod. There are songs on it that I would never listen to, or buy on my own. But its what she and her girlfriends like to listen to on the way out on the town. It gets the mood set.

Good enough for me!
