Topic: Tunings

Dose Joe use any altered tunings or open tunings for his songs if so, what are they?

Re: Tunings

I heard him say he "cheats and uses an open E tuning while playing slide" other than that his songs are in standard tuning. Unless someone corrects me.

Re: Tunings

He definitly uses open E for slide. He also used a drop D on Takin the Hit.

Re: Tunings

I recall that Palm Trees Helicopters & Gasoline had a funky tuning on it. And I'm pretty sure Joe's over of Albert Collins's Left Overs features Albert's special tuning.

For The River, he uses Open F.

Re: Tunings

Joe has personally told me that he uses Open E on Walkin' Blues, and open F on a 12 string dobro on Mumbling Word

Block inlay Gibson ES-335, 50th anniversary American Strat, '61 RI White SG, '62 RI Relic Strat, Replica Korina Flying V, Gold Tone Paul Beard Resonator,  '58 Les Paul RI, American Highway 1 Fender Strat, Breedlove Acoustic, Stonetree Joe Bonamassa Custom, HIWATT Lead 100R, Reeves Custom 30.

Re: Tunings

Thanks for that. I can have a great time messing about with my guitar tunings. At the Pacific Rd gig i think it's about the best sound i have ever heard at a gig. The Pacific Rd was a tram station and the roof is high so the sound can get lost but it was so balanced, the lighting was rubbish as geoff said, could have done better with two torches and some coloured plastic

Cheers all

Re: Tunings

India I'm sure has a different tuning as well. Just not sure what it is.

Re: Tunings

Open tuning for slide guitar isn't cheating. Take a look at Derek Trucks....he uses open 'E' and plays without the slide too, still in open 'E'. Slide guitar in 'E' or 'G' are probably the most used tunings but it's great to find something 'new' that makes you write a new song. Break the rules or we'll all stand still.

The only slide song (that i can think of right now) that Joe plays is Cradle Rock- in standard tuning...
