Hey Stu, I agree on both CSN&Y and Joni Mitchell. Your signature at the moment is from one of my favorite Skynyrd songs ever. The ballad of Curtis Lowe. With your permission I would like to add............................... Mr. Ronnie Van Zandt to the list. Pete
good call
Bacharach and David. Tom Waits. John Hiatt. and obviously John Paul George and.....well, sorry Ringo, not you, although much respect for being a Beatle ;-)
They're gonna put me in the movies....

These are some of the songwriters I like,
Maurice White, Harry Chapin, McFadden and Whitehead, Jeff Keith, India.Arie, Neil Peart,
Rik Emmett, Mick Jones/Lou Gramm, Paul Rodgers(for songs throughout my life), Marvin Gaye for his
What's going On album, and Stevie Wonder.
One of my favorite Rush songs is this, written by Neil Peart:

and this song by Tesla, which is a great biopic on Nikola Tesla,
The title itself gives a good insight into what Nikola Tesla went thru.

I'd like to add john prine to the list.
Here are a few more to add to the list.
John Kay, Carole King, Willie Nelson, and another songwriting duo Don Henley & Glenn Frey.
Paul
Jackson Browne and James Taylor
Eddie Vedder
Beyond Mr. B. and a plethora of blues songwriters (past & present), I can't live without my..........Beatles (collectively and individually), Stones, CSNY, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, James Taylor, Stevie Wonder, Leonard Cohen, and Van Morrison.
By the way, for you Willie Nelson fans, we just saw him Friday night and he was GREAT....speaking of which.....don't let's forget those who gave him many a romantic ballad to cover, like....Hoagie Carmichael, Irving Berlin, George & Ira Gershwin.
Generally speaking, if I'm not rockin', then I love lyrics that make me weep, harmonies that make my spine tingle, and a melody that is unforgettable. Anyone else get misty eyed when hearing the National Anthem?

Since 9/11 I can't hear the Star Spangled Banner at a live event without tearing up.

As well as lots of songwriters mentioned already, I'm with you on the great romantics, Libby...and the tearing up. I work at an elementary school whose music teacher has the kids sing "America the Beautiful" at every assembly. Cry every single time.
Thanks for those replies guys. Yesterday, when I checked, there weren't any replies yet. I was beginning to think that meant I was the only softie. Nice to know I have company.
Libby
Unless I misread some posts.. But did nobody suggest 'Queen'? The guys are genius' to me.. Some incredibly written, very very clever songs written by them..
