Topic: Cambridge Gig 14th Feb 08.....WOW

I gotta be honest I first heard about this guy very recently from a collegue at work and listened to Sloe Gin. So you could say I am new to Joe Bonamassa.
A group of us  booked tickets to see him at the Junction in Cambridge last night.
Joe if you ever read this there is only one word to discribe you................ AWESOME.
What an unbelievable nights music. Bonamassa is truly extraordinary. Ive seen some great guitar players over the years but he tops the lot. I am hooked.
Im now out to buy the rest of his albums.
Could anyone tell me the acoustic song title that seemed to go on for ever (if only) and consisted of just Joe. Quite possible the greatest guitar solo I have ever witnessed.
Why didnt anyone tell me about him a few years ago!!! Im still buzzing

Re: Cambridge Gig 14th Feb 08.....WOW

Hallo Seany,

First of all : welcome to Joe's wonderful forum with all wonderful people!!
Glad you signed up here.
The acoustic song is -Wake up dreaming-.
No problem by buying all his CD's, they are all brilliant. All different styles, from rock, to blues, to bluesrock.
Don't forget the 2 DVD's he made. The Rockpalast live DVD is a must have and the New day yesterday live DVD too . If the last one is not available anymore I can get you a copy if you like. let me know please.
I know Joe since August 2004 and he keeps on surprising me every time..
His Cd's are top, his DvD's are top and Joe himself is an extremely nice and honest person.
Dive into Joe's musicworld and you won't be disappointed!!
I've seen hundreds of guitarplayers in my live but Joe is one of the best together with Jeff Beck, Michael Schenker, Frank Zappa.
He's releasing a live CD within a few months!!

You had the same experience by seeing him live the first time like all forummembers had : Don't believing what you hear and see!
Saw him 11 times so far and in a few weeks 3 more gigs! I'm sure you will see him more often in the Bonafuture.

Re: Cambridge Gig 14th Feb 08.....WOW

SeanyP diddy blow you away my good man? Of course, of course, he has a knack for blowing people away on first glance.  As why you didn't know prior, I believe that's such a common question we here could call it THE FAQ of Bonamassa FAQ's...And it has no answer.  There is someone you passed ot the street today for whom that question will once again be asked for the first time a la "Where have I been"? or "Where did this guy come from"? Regardless, welcome and do your best to prevent it from being endemic, as Joe Bonamassa plays the UK every year now, twice a year sometimes, and mixes it up as to where the locations will be.

As I said before I think it is not available anymore, at least not here in Holland.
If it is not for sale anymore, I can make you a copy (only then , otherwise Joe doesn't get his money !).
Other members can you tell me if it is true.

Re: Cambridge Gig 14th Feb 08.....WOW

Hello all

Cambridge 14th feb 08 was my first show and it was a superb performance by Joe and his band. Have previously thought walter trout was the best guitarist but joe might just be better!!!

A really good variety of songs - acoustic to electric, loud to relaxed.

One thing bugged me though - how often does this happen to you? A bloke and his bird barged past the guy next to me and ended up directly in front. Then they continued to snog, take pictures of each other, talk etc through Joes songs.  I told the woman to pay attention to Joe and stop ruining my f-ing concert, and swap places if they want to carry on but HOW FLAMING INCONSIDERATE!!!
Fortunately someone passed out a couple of rows in front. People moved forward as she was taken out, and i ended up away from them but why do people do this and bother coming?

Anyway great show Joe, i'll be buying the CDs/DVDs and seeing you again next time you're here.

Cheers
Jon

Re: Cambridge Gig 14th Feb 08.....WOW

Hi Andre,

I believe the 12/21/01 DVD from which ANDY (the A New Day Yesterday, Live CD) was released is not available outside the US for licensing reasons. At least, that's what I was told by a seller on Amazon when I enquired as to its availability. I managed to buy a mint condition copy with the So, It's Like That CD for £20 via another Amazon seller - a bargain I think. The DVD is brilliant and the only thing that spoils it slightly for me is the sexy girls dancing in the background. I usually prefer to keep sex and music separate!

Jon, I sympathise totally. As dedicated fans we don't want anyone or anything to get in the way (literally) of our enjoyment of watching the master play. The only similar experience I've had is at a Hamsters gig where a woman's gregarious dancing in a tightly packed bar nearly resulted in a fight when her partner was asked to keep her under control. If you haven't heard of The Hamsters, they come from Southend-on-Sea (where I live) and are genuinely (and probably officially) the hardest working band in the UK as they are always on the road. Check out their website http://www.thehamsters.co.uk/ and have a laugh at the home page. Although they are not a covers band their interpretations of ZZ Top and Hendrix are legendary. The Hamsters play Cambridge regularly so if you haven't seen them before look out for their next gig.

Regards
Phil

I posted elswhere on here....it annoys me that people go to a gig to get drunk at the bar and talk all night. Stay at home and let everyone else enjoy the show.

Re: Cambridge Gig 14th Feb 08.....WOW

Yes, I agree. During Crosby's quieter song(s) last night in the background one could hear the constant chatter of those propping up the bar.  sad

Re: Cambridge Gig 14th Feb 08.....WOW

Went to hear Joe at Cambridge. The Junction is crap for fragile people in wheelchairs - thanks to all those who helped - or offered to help and no thanks to the people who kicked the **## out of the chair and me. Concert was brilliant - couldn't see anything but just hearing Joe was fantastic - no-one as good as him since Zappa. Anyone got the playlist for the evening?

Re: Cambridge Gig 14th Feb 08.....WOW

Nanook,

I'm really sorry to hear about your experience at Cambridge. I thought public venues now had an obligation to cater for people in your situation. Did you call them in advance to make arrangements? If Joe does get to the RAH next year I know they have proper facilities for whhelchair users - the difficult bit might be getting there.

I agree about Zappa, the most underrated guitarist ever. Still, that's what happens when you're best known for dirty ditties.

I'm pretty sure the set list will be the same as for the other shows. See the Shepherds Bush thread for details.

Re: Cambridge Gig 14th Feb 08.....WOW

Nanook and Phil  I agree on Zappa. As I said yesterday on the forum;

Joe is in my top 3 live guitarists ever together with Jeff Beck and Frank Zappa.

Like BB King said: it's not the speed, it's the right tone at the right moment.... and these 3 have, Zappa had it all.

Re: Cambridge Gig 14th Feb 08.....WOW

Hi all, saw Joe for the first time at the hawth in Crawley, and two days later at cambridge, he is just awesom, I have most of his albums but seeing him live was just fantastic, the atmosphere was electric! I hope he comes back to the UK soon, I'm hooked

Re: Cambridge Gig 14th Feb 08.....WOW

Wow!  That's a lot of new members to welcome in one night!  Don't forget to pop onto the Introductions page so that the rest of the forum members will know you've arrived!  Meanwhile, allow me to extend a warm welcome to each of you - SeanyP, Nanook, Curtainman, and Jen.

Like everyone else, we had the same initial Joe experience.....the "Where has this guy been?  Where have we been?" reaction.  Always happens.  smile  Part of the fun of going to a show is watching the first-timers picking their chins up off the floor after it's over!!  And yes, it does just get better - every time.  smile

SeanyP - I believe Joe said in his recent BBC interview with Paul Jones that he would be returning to the UK for a festival this summer - check the interview out on JBtv (see easy link above or on home page of website) to see if I heard correctly.

Curtainman - I agree with you.  Chatting it up during someone's performance is BEYOND RUDE.  I've commented on that before.  I've seen it happen twice now when Crosby Loggins has opened for Joe.  Not cool.  But, as I've said, they never flinched but, rather, maintained their cool professionalism throughout the nonsense.

Rocket - you had asked me if the Coach House/Galaxy shows were my first.....they weren't.  I tried to leave you a couple of messages so that you could read the whole history of our Bonamassaworld (see Show Reviews - Coach House & Galaxy from a few days ago).  I'm still looking thru my photos to see if I captured you.  smile

Andre - My hubby is lucky enough to have witnessed the genius of all three of your favorite guitarists live.  smile  I'm gonna have to pull out the old Zappa albums and try him on for size again.  I must confess, I wasn't quite ready for him when I was a young girl.  smile

Steelydad - Lookin' for that DVD myself.

and

Nanook - I'm sorry that you've been subjected to people's insensitivity and terrible behavior.  We were at a Willie Nelson concert here (California) last weekend.  There was a young woman in a wheelchair (an elevated one) whose seat was right in front of me.  Her mom and aunt were very concerned that I (and others) would not be able to see.  I would have been happy to peek around her, no problem at all, but, her family asked the manager to help (which she should have done in the first place).  The manager said she could move her up front, but, that one of the three of them would have to stay behind.  RIDICULOUS!!!  We all told her to TRY AGAIN.  I'm happy to report that all three ladies were moved to the fourth or fifth row and had a FANTASTIC TIME.  My Dad was disabled - I don't think people intend to behave poorly, I think they just don't THINK.....just like the drunken chatterers.  I'm glad others were helpful.  Welcome to Joe's world.  Enjoy your new friends here.  smile

I know that Joe could play one of those kid's guitars with the plastic strings and make it sound good-
