Man, if I had to take every music hero of mine off the list because of drug and/or alcohol problems, it would be short. I liked the Amy Winehouse CD before I heard any stories. I remember Joe likes her too. I harkens back to the Motown days for me. I also think Alicia Keys can belt out a song with soul. Again, it's all about each individual's response to a song...proof that it varies...    Cathy

Re: Grammys tonight!

I like Alicia Keyes.  She's a piece.  She can sing.

I like Vince Gill, looks like a kid and Kanye got his ***-whooping from Vince in front of everybody.  Vince is a good guitarist, better than most think; and I am not a country music fan by any stretch.

Beyonce held her own...barely.  There's only one Tina (or Cher).  All the rest of the cutie pies...well you know.  It is corporate glam bs, but people buy it.

I don't get Springstein at all.  I never have.  Although he wrote a fantastic song the Pointer Sisters did.  (RIP BabyJune).  He's a genius at songwriting, I guess.

Amy Winehouse...disease in denial?  I just don't know.  Too many tatoos, IMO.  Her music is a time travel.

KWS with that high powered true blues all star cast, on his first (IMO) real down & dirty, old school blues effort got slapped.  BLASPHEMY!  That boy has come a long way,

Amy Winehouse has her demons and is trying to get a handle on them, but do we all forget that KWS met his current wife Maureen (Mel Gibson's daughter) when the two of them were in rehab together. Jumping into a relationship under those circumstances is like playing Russian roulette. Anybody who's ever been in recovery would understand, but more power to them if they make it work. Also anyone who's been down the rehab road probably gets the meaning in some of KWS' last release as well as SRV's last studio effort on songs like Crossfire, Tightrope, and Wall of Denial. They're not just songs they're testamonials or as they say in AA, sharing.

P.S.  Vince Gill used to rock when he was a member of Pure Prairie League. He joined them for a short while when Craig Fuller left for Canada to avoid the draft. You Little Feat fans remember Craig as lead vocalist after they regrouped following Lowell Georges passing.

I first heard Amy on a TV show called Mad Men on AMC.  It takes place in the early 60's in New York and revolves around guys that work for an ad agency...  I don't care too much for the Rehab song, but I like the rest of that album.  I hear ya NPB, I was wondering last night if guys like all those tatoos on girls/ladies...ugh!  Jane, I don't know your Vince Gill story, spill the beans girlfriend, he's a great guitarist, I appreciate his less country stuff especially.  Shame about 10 Days Out...

I have to side with Dave on this one. I don't get it. I thought she was terrible. There is a band in town that covers Rehab I'd rather listen to them do it.

Not a big fan of tatoos but combinge them with every other style statement she was making last night and it adds up to words I can't use here. I have a real problem with somebody reaching popular success she has now attained but willing to throw it all away becase she can't control her impulses. Listening to her especially last night where she was going through withdrawls or a bout of nerves. She couldn't of been on top of her game taking time off from her stint in rehab to perform. I still think there are girls every season on American Idol that can sing circles around Amy Winehouse. She has become wildly interesting simply because of her lifestyle and image not because of any talent. I'll try this IMO to qualify my remarks.

I agree jim, but if we were going to get all over her for her problems, we'd have to hate on Hendrix, Clapton, Jimmy Page, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Eddie Van Halen for their problems. Heck, in the case of Hendrix, Joplin, and Jim Morrison, they didn't even try to get better and in the end, could not control their impulses. I think Amy's got a lot of talent, but not my taste. I hope she gets well. You hate to see anybody waste their talent.

Jdawg, my brother.  I'm done with the field work.  I have been since Nov. of '83.  Met the wife in a fellowship hall in '84.  We've been together ever since, despite the fact that the women won't leave me alone...jist playing, dawg. big_smile

Rehab seems to be a way to glamorize and profit from a disease that will kill you on the installment plan, all the while telling you, "Just one more...this time it will be different."

A program of recovery is available to the desperate who WANT it.  Many who NEED it will die, tortured by their demons, while the uninitiated, but well-meaning, will cluck and tisk.

Blues From the Bottoms is more than a cute statement about where I came from.  That is all I will share here.  I have email.

Re: Grammys tonight!

About Amy- I think we morphed in 2 directions...liking her or not and judging/boycotting her because of what she represents...

She was on the cover of our newspaper hugging her mom, circulation 800,000, which is the media once again rewarding bad behavior...I'm not into that and she certainly isn't a good role model...she's talented and troubled, but based on her performance, I'm good with listening to her recordings and hoping she gets better. Either Amy's father or father-in-law wanted Amy's fans to boycott buying her music, until she gets better...

to sidetrack another step-About some of the substance abuse out there...addiction to prescription pain meds is a really big problem...some people start out innocently enough with a sports injury and get addicted...I don't know how much the lawsuit and fine was, but the drug company who makes oxycotin (sp) lied on all the drug labeling about how addictive their drug is, all to make more $$$$$...morally so wrong on every level...

And back to the grammys-Jane, cool about Vince...sounds like good karma and I was thinking of you when the camera went to Tim McGraw...:)

My daughter watched the Grammys I think just to see John Mayer, she was disappointed that he only did that little bit with Alicia!

Re: Grammys tonight!

Jane,

Alicia Keys is baaaaaad!  She can do it all.  She plays the piano beautifully, writes her songs and sings from her soul.  She has great control of her voice and knows when to use her power.  You said in another thread you would like to know about songs from a woman to a man.(I think that is what you said).  I'll put this as my nomination, in order to keep it with the Grammy topic. She intros the video with another one of her songs:

And Angela, I also liked the more diverse entertainment.  That is how the Grammys use to be.  It got away from that and I'm glad to see it somewhat back.

Vince Gill use to host the Country Music Awards for quite a long time.  He is a fantastic host.  He's very natural and very funny.  Love to see him host again.

I did like Daft Punk in the Kanye West performance.  I enjoyed Herbie Hancock also.  I like watching the Grammy's for the performances, not for the awards.  I just don't care for a number of their selections of nominees.  The Grammys have lost their credibilty for me.

Re: Grammys tonight!

way to go Herbie Hancock.  His new album "The Joni Letters" is awesome...I encourage you all to check it out!

It looks like a few of you didnt agree with my opinion on Amy Winehouse...thats cool, different strokes for different folks...there is no way I'm listening to her cd...if thats what her voice sounds like, I rather listen to "Tiny Tim"...lol
