Re: JCM 2000 DSL

I recently bought the 40 watt combo version of the DSL. I absolutely love the red channel for a warm, Eric Johnson-like tone. I tend to over-do the warmth and dime the mids while keeping the treble low, and bass around 6. The more volume, the better. That's just me.

I initially liked the first overdrive (yellow) channel but I've soured on it a bit. It doesn't take overdrive pedals very well to give it a boost, so I use it only selectively without adding any additional overdrive to it.

The green channel works fine and it is a typical Marshall clean channel... and this takes overdrive pedals very well in my opinion.

I haven't played through the 50 or 100 watters very much, just a bit in a showroom. But if the combo is anything like those, I view the DSL as having a sweet spot tone that, once its discovered, is worth the $$. It may be fussy, and get overheated at times, but the extra work is worth it. I guess it's like a marriage to a high-maintenance woman. No, I'm not married.

Re: JCM 2000 DSL

I used to use a GE7 in the loop to boost the volume for solos and it works really well.....and I still do the same on the Dr Z Maz38.

Hi,

the DSL heads need an EQ pedal in the effects loop to really shape the tone...try that...you won't be dissappointed...I use a Boss GE7...though the MXR EQ's are alot better.....

You'll find you can shape the preamp more on the lead channel....and get some nice tones...

When using the green channel just get the volume at that point of breakup...and slam it with a tubescreamer type unit.....I use a Carl Martin....you'll get some great Joe tones that way also....

The DSL's are great amps....I use a DSL100.....I tend to use the green channel boosted for classic rock tones and the red channel for more of a modern rock tone....

Great forum this by the way..

Cheers

EQ in the effects loop eh? Something wrong with the eq on the front of the amp?

never give up, never slow down
never grow old, never ever die young

Perhaps the best sound clip EVER of a Marshall DSL 50.  Check out Gary Moore doing a Red House cover

This is exactly the sound I get out of mine when CRANKED.

Marshall should use this video to sell this amp.

Re: JCM 2000 DSL

I'm seeing you're saying to eliminate c12, but in the Marshallampforum they guys there are saying c13, are you sure you did c12 or am I missing something?

For some reason Marshall put a 440 ufd bleed cap in the dsl's.  I guess they thought at extreme volumes it would help with clarity.  This high of a cap...yeah you have clarity...but ZERO tone.  So they subbed clarity for character and tone to me.  I guess they think us young players don't know what tone is and therefore won't miss it.  I've talked to so many people about why Marshall did this and most just scratch their heads.  It is a ridiculous value on the treble.  This amp alone has just too much treble and tinny highs at any level...and at high levels is sometimes where treble can get away from you anyway.  To me the amp in the red channel wide open...dimed...had too much  treble even with presence and treble just about at "0".  I made a mod of eliminating the c12 capacitor which was 440.  The amp is responding exactly how I thought it should have since I got it.  You can switch between the green and red channels and it just kicks a hell of alot more gain but with that punchy goodness of the green channel.  At high volumes it maintains clarity.  Right now I am running treble at 5-6 mid 7-8 bass 8 and it roars just with a guitar plugged straight in...no pedals, eq, etc.  I want to try different values at the c12 position on the board to see how it responds.  I was thinking of replacing the 440 with a 100 or something along those lines.

here's an excellent site about anything and eveything related to all marshall amp models

Re: JCM 2000 DSL

NEVERMIND... I read the marshallampforum topic a little further.... should do that a bit more often...

Re: JCM 2000 DSL

yeah one guy on there misspoke and made the mistake of saying c13 from the start and I think he later corrected himself...but it threw half of the thread readers off...including me until I read on.
