Topic: Greatest songwriters of all time??

I watched the movie "Across the Universe" last night.
I know there's been lots of great songwriters throughout the years, but in my opinion, none better than Lennon & McCartney.
Who do you like, and/or who's the best, in your opinion??

Yeah Definitley lennon and mcartney, no one will ever surpass them.  I like John Mayer too, I enjoy his songwriting better than his blues.  Dave matthews as well.

No arguments from me on any of those listed so far.  I'd add Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen for their collaboration on several of Sinatra's hits.  Their songs plus Frank's voice and phrasing were far ahead of their time IMO.

nick cave and tom waits and leonard cohen are all really good too but have too many boring songs for me to put with the top three there. 

if we are talking about lyrics and a fitting song which is what i think of when i hear the term song writer that is why you don't see any flashy guitarists up there, and that is why i wil never call bonamassa one of the best songwriters ever unless he starts writing a lot more songs.  one of the best guitarists ever?  certainly.  songwriters?  not even close.

going right now i have said james macmurtry and contend he is one of the best of this generation.  also i don't know if anyone has heard this.
