Topic: Mars Volta

People are raving about this band. I don't get it. Does anybody else?

Technique doesn't come into it. I deal with emotions.

Re: Mars Volta

I liked them when they first hit the scene.  They have kind of that modern prog rock thing kinda going for them.  They are interesting, but I haven't listened to them for quite a while.  Kind of grew out of that stuff.

Re: Mars Volta

Most of their stuff borders on "noise."  Almost "avant-garde"ish.

Re: Mars Volta

There is no nice way to say this, Mars Volta is the worse band I have ever seen perform in my entire life!!  They were the warm-up for the Red Hot Chili Peppers on the Stadium Arcadium tour and I believe the connection may be RHCP's guitarist John F. is friends w/someone in Mars Volta.  I couldn't tell where one song started and another ended, sometimes I thought they sounded like they were warming up or tuning their guitars, the performance could have been one long song, I never figured them out...people in droves left the stadium, no exaggeration!  With that said, we came home and my son put his 1 CD of them in the player and it was totally different and much better, but I never gave them another listen!  From what I read in reviews, they definitely try to achieve something different in a live performance, avant-garde noise Monty is a polite description! smile

Yeah, I have no real desire to see them live.  I have their first two albums and they are enjoyable from time to time, but I've heard live clips of them and I wasn't really impressed.

Flea played trumpet (and bass, I believe) on a couple of their songs and John Frusciante played guitar on a couple of tracks as well.

I was surprised Steve Vai says he likes them.
