I know what you're saying, and I don't totally disagree, but I think that some of these fests could reach some people that have never heard of Joe, and would be unlikely to purchase tickets otherwise.

I think your right Bill,probably the main reason someone like Joe would play a fest.More exposure to people that have never heard him.Lucky souls who happen to wander into his stage area.

Bands used to kill to play Summerfest.  50,000-100,000  people there everyday.
Fantastic exposure.  You just walk around listening to the different stages till
you find someone you like - Joe would certainly get people's attention.

Yay, a bonus day off work for me, due to our lovely Wis. winter!  Sort of got off the main point of whether Joe should play Summerfest or not.  I don't claim to know, but I agree that sort of setting allows people to "stumble" across an artist they otherwise wouldn't know about.  I still have cool memories of 2003.  I don't think we even caught his name while we were watching, but we walked out in search of the CD he mentioned was selling somewhere on the grounds and found  the SILT CD/DVD.  I recall saying Man this guy is cool. Striped pants and playing Hendrix and Clapton.  Like a '60s time trip.  We were tempted to follow him to the Port Washington Smelt Fry fest (or something like that) that I think was headed to the following day.  Yeah, all because we were just wandering around, planning to catch the Jayhawks or Wallflowers that evening.

We really wanted to see Santana the following summer, but couldn't make it, and haven't made another Summerfest since.

I really think Joe enjoys the festivals...gives him time to see old friends (musicians) that he wouldnt if everyone was some where else...just my 2 cents

I would tend to agree - Summerfest is very well run - you play on time and are decent
or not invited back.  Lots of the guys will jam together unannounced - last year we're
watching Buddy Guy in the rain, and all of a sudden John Mayer pops out to play along.
Now Shred - maybe this is a good time for you to come visit us ????

Milwaukee is about an hour north. And Chicago is a great town, especially in the summer. Maybe Joe will play Rockford again and you can come up for that.

I'm just saying.
