Topic: JB's Shepherd's Bush EP

Hey all,
Just purchased Joe's "Shepherd's Bush" EP on iTunes.  Never heard of it until right when I purchased it.  What's the story behind it?  Is it an iTunes exclusive?  Just curious.  If you haven't already heard it, it's a wonderful live performance!!!  The cover of "Just Got Paid" is absolutely amazing!! big_smile

Sorry to hijack the thread, but thanks for the props, man!  Yeah we've been in the studio cutting our EP which should be out in late February! smile  Hope the rainy weather isn't affecting you too bad up there in Roseville!  big_smile

Roy:  Just get your kids to show you how to do it....it's not too hard and you could carry your entire Joe library in your hand any/everywhere.  What a deal!

Re: JB's Shepherd's Bush EP

Glad you asked about it - I just searched Shepherds Bush on the forums to find out anything about it because I was so suprised to see a new release listed for joe and no talk of it anywhere.  Suprised there is no link for it or info on the home page.

Anyhow, I stumbled upon it on Napster - It's available there too, and it is soooo amazing!! I love it.  Just Got Paid is 15 min long i think. Get the word out!

Re: JB's Shepherd's Bush EP

I must find a way to get this.

It's too bad I hate downloads.  I wish there was a hard copy of this out there somewhere.

.mp3= crappy digitally compressed sound file....I suppose that is what I get for being an audiophile...

Re: JB's Shepherd's Bush EP

I'm sorry, but the stuff I download off iTunes does not sound bad at all. It sounds just as good as a cd. I got my laptop hooked up through my stereo, and as a matter of fact, it sounds better than a cd on it. And I know what badly compressed files sound like, there's none of that going on. Just download and be done with it.

I hook my iPod in my car stereo, and it sounds better than when I had a cd player in it. And I have a good ear.

You're right, Deezer, the quality sounds great on the iTunes download!  But, I'm pretty ol' skool and kinda wish there was a hard copy also, just because I like reading liner notes, etc.  I'm a dork like that ;p

Re: JB's Shepherd's Bush EP

Sorry, just not a fan of that digital compression that is done to make .mp3s the filesize they are.  If you like 'em more power to ya...I just don't care much for them personally.

It honestly does not sound compressed at all. Sorry.

Re: JB's Shepherd's Bush EP

Heres my perceptions on the whole compressed download thing:  Yes, a non compressed file is going to sound better, just the nature, more dynamics and more samples in it. However, I could have the most uncompressed file ever with amazing quality speakers, and its not going to change the fact that I'm a room with drywall, the water softner is running, the tv is on in the other room and my light buzzes, etcc...etc.  So to me unless I'm in a sound proof room with wonderful speakers, non parallel ceilings and tonewood floors and walls, what does it really matter in the end.

I know, I just don't want him to miss out on something really cool because of logistics.

I really don't know why you are apologizing to me.  I know what I like and that is all there is to it.  I'm not a fan of .mp3s.

its all good

Right, I'm not dissing the tunes at all.

I am missing out, perhaps, but you know, I don't really make enough money to warrant spending it on a quality of audio file that I am not all that fond of.  I'll just go spend my nickels on a quality hard copy.

I probably miss out on a lot of really cool things because I am poor.  That is just the way it is.  I can't really afford to be spending money on something that is going to make me grit my teeth in the back of my mind every time I hear it.

I'm really glad you like it, I really am.  Maybe someday I can hear it, but I just can't warrant going and buying it right now.

I'm a dork like that too! That's one of the big drawbacks to digital downloads to me too.  I just switched from dial up to highspeed wireless (yeah, im a lil slow on tech trends) so I have not yet bought whole albums as digital downloads, but it would be cool if, when you do, it would include a file with liner notes and even graphics, etc that the artists would have included with a cd.... is that already happening?

As for the sound, I agree with kyle - i'm no expert and probably kinda deaf from being a front row fanatic at far too many concerts, but the distinction between a cd and a well-produced mp3 is lost on me. Some of the crappy ones are pretty offputting though.  Since digital music is the most profitable format currently, it's only a matter of a very short time before they find ways to make it sound like Joe's right in your living room playing just for you, or sittin and strummin next to you in the car.

I'm usually broke myself, so I can understand not laying down hard earned cash for something that just doesnt sound right to YOU - even if others enjoy it.

It probably won't be in .mp3 format though, as it will always use a lossy compression algorithm, and .mp3 has several inherent limitations.

There are extraordinary hi-def digital audio files/compression formats, but they take up much more memory. (DolbyHD, Apple Lossless Audio Codec (ALAC), MPEG-4, ect.)

Now that I think about it, I think iTunes went to an AAC (still a lossy compression algorithm, but much more superior to an .mp3) awhile back.  I'm not sure if this a standard, but I remember reading that they were offering it, which is good, but it's still a lossy.... tongue.

Well, after spending lots of time learning about this stuff in school, I usually can't help but notice those compression formats.  Those "components less audible to human hearing" still indirectly affect what you do hear.  Much like how frequencies above 20 KHz (or below about 20 Hz) or so are beyond human hearing, but still have an effect on the lower (or higher) frequencies.

It isn't so bad when there is other extraneous noise going on while you are listening, but for non-passive listening (how I prefer to listen to music, personally), it tends to bug me.
