Topic: Joe to Play @ Blues From the Top

Haven't been to this one, but I have heard nothing but good things about it.   Great lineup this year...Bonnamassa, Thackery, Winter, Margolin, and Garner...hard to beat that.

From Blueswax:

Blues From The Top Announces Lineup:

The Grand County Blues Society will present the 6th edition of "Blues From The Top" in Winter Park, Colorado, on June 28 and 29. The lineup includes Joe Bonamassa, Johnny Winter, Jimmy Thackery, Bob Margolin and The Delta Sonics, Eden Brent, Deanna Bogart, Jimmy Hall, Larry Garner, John Alex Mason, and the best Blues band in India, Soulmate. And a few surprises. Watch here for more updates on this great festival.

Chris, thanks for the info.

Anyone know about the Indian band, Soulmate? I've been looking around the Net for Indian blues and haven't found it. I knew there had to be some since Joe's going out there soon.

I'm just saying.

Well I don't know if they call it the blues over there, but that's what it is!  Lots of traditional Hindi music is some of the most soulful and powerful music out there.  Indian ragas are, literally, a religious experience.

Interestingly enough, the word "raga" is Sanskirt for "mood" or "color."  Blues anyone?  Also interesting is that it traditionally is five or more musical notes in which a melody is built.  Sounds a lot like the pentatonic scale that is used so frequently in the blues.  This of course is a very generalized summary of a raga (a discussion could go on for pages), but I think it's a cool parallel.

Thanks for the info Montius. That's the kind of thing I've been looking for, along the lines of what Joe did on "India".

I googled this and took a listen.

They sound very traditionally American blues which is ok but not what I'm looking for. Maybe nobody is doing it?

Re: Joe to Play @ Blues From the Top

We actually make a point out of going up there for this every year-we've been to the last three.

They moved it into the town of Winter Park last year and made it a 2 day deal.  It started out on the ski slopes at Sol Vista which was nice but sort of remote and a little scary if people were driving back into Winter Park after the concert was over after drinking all day!!!
Since it's now in town and they let you have in/out priviledges you have a much better choice of food than just the stuff inside the venue (not that it's bad!!!)

Joe was there last year sort of unofficially (he played there the previous 2 years)...but he did end up getting up on stage and playing a few songs anyway...much to the applause of the crowd!!!  Thanks Joe-

I don't see Tab Benoit listed and he's always there-actually he has a fundraising golf tourney on Friday (Voice of the Wetlands Foundation).  Most of the musicians also play around town at the small bars/restaurants throughout the weekend.

Anyway, I live in Colorado and would be happy to answer any questions about this festival.

I'm sure it's out there, but finding it is a different story.

Traditional Hindi Classical music is around.  Just listen to some Ravi Shankar.  He's absolutely awesome.

Derek Trucks Band has mixed a lot of that stuff with their Blues/Jazz/Rock kinda hybrid thing they got going on.  He even has a tabla player.  You might also want to check out Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.  They have some of that stuff in there too (not to mention they are just totally mindblowing anyway, especially live), but they lean much more on the jazz side than anything.

Re: Joe to Play @ Blues From the Top

Soulmate is an Indian band from the mountain town on Shillong in India's remote North East. They play straight up Blues Rock...their lead vocalist called Tipriti is very good and a stunner to boot. Some folks might be disappointed to note that they do not have any Indian infleunces and sounds in their music. There are a few bands in India which blend some local sounds into a rock/fusion sound. The bands are Parikrama (they fronted for Iron Maiden recently), Advaita and Euphoria. You will find Parikrama on YouTube for sure.

For someone who uses sounds Indian sounds verywell listen to Bob Brozmann. He is brilliant collaborative musician and plays the national resophonic like no other. Get a hold of his album Mahima...well reviewed and available on Amazon.

We in India are wating for Joe with bated breat. Also performing the same night will be Robert Cray. That should be some night.
