Re: On the topic of female guitar players...

This thread has morphed.

Yes good point indeed, Angela:
"I think another passe perception is that of maybe only tomboy types playing electric guitar....I love girly-girl badass guitar players...in heels, lipstick, nail polish and a sparkly girly colored guitar, because if I ever played, that's how I'd want to look.  (that's just me, not for everyone)   Bonnie, Susan T., Ana, Sue Foley...all great role models for young girls."

I love that, too.  Susan T...oh yeah, on crossroads DVD, skirt, heels, lipstick, earrings and wild hair and Kicking A & taking names.  Ms. Bonnie and many, many more.  My daughter is girly plus and 14 years old, plays piano and reads music, BUT ALSO took the Washburn 3/4 bass out of my studio, is learning that and has two older brothers that are brutal, so she ain't skeered.

She knows her stuff, too.  My sons won't really talk technical, musical stuff with me, but she is into it.  We count wierd jazz or fusion time signatures and talk about accidentals in a certain key or key changes.  One day listening to a soul ballad on the car radio, I said didja hear that?  That was a key change, sounded like a whole step.  She said very good daddy, it goes from G to A.  I play it for something at school.  So I immediately invited her to jump out of the car and trot alongside down US1 at 45 mph.  SmartAleck.

So she is the future, too, and I'm glad.  Music is one more language. Cathy, I'm keeping options open.

Side note: when Carmine saw her picture he told Ms.Tia she better look out.  Ms.Tia said no worries, pointing at me.  He just laughed...Somethings never change.

Much Love.

I guess I do have to spell it out because someone is a leetle bit sensitive.

Playing the electric guitar is not lady-like (that was the imagery I was trying to discretely evoke). Little girls are told from a very young age how important it is to be lady-like because if you're not, you know, no guy is going to want to marry you. So, missy, you don't want to play that rock n roll guitar. You want to play the violin or the piano.

That was my point. If you think this says something about men...well...books have been written about such things. smile

Thank goodness there are women who didn't listen to the message. Joan Jett and Chrissie Hynde come to mind as my favorites.

I'm not at all sensitive, it just seemed to me like you were pointing a finger at males for girls not picking up the guitar.  I didn't really think that was a fair accusation at all, so I commented on it.

Sure, girls may be told from a young age how important it is to be lady-like, but the same goes for guys.  We are told we have to be manly and guy-like.  But guess what?  We are not inherently bound by that.  It's a free country and nothing is stopping anyone from picking up the guitar other than their own personal convictions.  So any finger pointing is just plain silly.

You said: "Is it so hard for most guys (and I emphasize MOST) or most people in general to accept that guitar playing is not determined by gender?? I see a lot of guys (and girls) doing this...commenting on Youtube and stuff..."

This to me seems to say that it is primarily guys that hold this conviction (notice how you emphasized guys in both sentences).  I think that is bull.  I don't think that is the case at all.  I believe most poeple probably comment on such a thing because it is a rare occurance, not because they think women are inherently disadvantaged at playing the instrument.  It's just the fact that less women pick up the guitar, and therefore there are going be less women who dedicate the amount of practice it takes to be outstanding.  You know, for one good guitar player (guy or girl) there are going to be a thousand that aren't so good.  It's all about the ratios, not the gender.   Like I said: same deal with rappers.  By and by, there are less white rappers out there, so the total number of white rappers that are seen as "great" is going to be far less.

Oh and:

"I think another passe perception is that of maybe only tomboy types playing electric guitar....I love girly-girl badass guitar players...in heels, lipstick, nail polish and a sparkly girly colored guitar, because if I ever played, that's how I'd want to look."

Yup!

Glam Rock?  Good one.  But being the sensitive man that I am, I want to see females in make up, high heels, frilly low cut tops, wild hair & lipstick, not males....but that's just me.  tee hee...just messing around...

Fretwork-do your students have a recital that they perform at?  Do you also perform solo or have a band?

Fretwork wrote:

This perception is going to change.  More than half of my student roster are females and it has been that way for the past seven years.  Whenever someone tells me, "You're good for a girl".  I simply reply, "No, I'm good because I practice."  I really try not to let it bother me.  As far as electric guitar being a "masculine" instrument, I dunno I'm about as "girly" as they come so I don't know what happened to me . . .

No recitals for my students.  A lot of my students are teens and would disown me as their teacher if I threw that idea out there.  We do however have a program for our more serious students to get involved in band/recording projects.  That is run by another teacher, but my students also have access to it.  It is a great thing he does.

As far as performing--I don't.  I haven't made it a priority.  With fifty students each week and two children of my own, it just doesn't appeal to me right now.  I can't imagine teaching until 9:00 at night, heading out to do a gig and getting home at 3:00 a.m. only to wake up at 6:00 to get my kids ready for school.  It exhausts me just thinking about it.  I don't know many women who do it.  I used to hit the local scene and sit in on open jams.  It was a great way to get my fix.  I'll probably start attending open jams again in the Fall but that's it.

Hi Fretwork,
50 students and 2 kids of your own...say no more, you have your hands full... Recitals are probably more associated with piano students now that I think of it.  I don't know if all Starbucks are doing this or not, but the one in my town encourages many of the high school students to perform acoustic sets in the evenings.  Its turned into something fun for everyone since of course their friends stop in and buy some of those fancy lattes etc., so everyones happy.
