Topic: Joe's Marshall cabinets

Just wondering what speakers he is using and if he did anything to the cabinets themselves.  I have about 4 marshall cabs and don't seem to have any luck getting any good lead tones out of the cabs.

Re: Joe's Marshall cabinets

Joe uses EV12L's for speakers- enough wattage so they don't blow at the volumes Joe plays at... Right now he's using some custom cabinests (I can never remember the name of them though- maybe someone else remembers?)

Re: Joe's Marshall cabinets

I think the custom cabs are made by a company called "Park" but I could be remembering wrong or late.

They are made by  auralex  http://www.auralex.com/  The Great Grandma refers to the model that is large enough to fit under Bass cabinets and also fits under Joe's cabinets. I think the size was added at Joe's request.

is this insinuating that Celestions cannot handle high volumes?
I know Zakk Wylde uses EV's but Slash uses Celestion Greenbacks........

Do Marshall cab speakers blow easily? I wouldn't mind hearing some horror stories about that!

I have heard some horror stories on how Celestions dont really hold up too well under extremely loud volume situations (for example JB)... the EV12L's are rated for 300 watts or something like that, whereas most Celestions are under 100 (if not all of them)... no matter what speaker, 300 watts can handle more power than one rated for 30 watts... thats why JB and Wylde use the EV12L's

Re: Joe's Marshall cabinets

I'm curious what you all run in terms of speakers in a 2x12.   I just picked up a Traynor Bassmaster head (a fun steal of a head)... and replaced the innards to match an old 50 watt plexi.   I then had an internal attenuator knob put on the back to help return the overall volume to sanity when playing rehearsals and such.   The head came with a Marshall cab holding 2 Celestion Greenbacks (G12m) rated at 25 watts each.   They did fine when i was running the amp on 2 (very clean), but now that i'm running it on 7, they're freaking out... even when attenuated.   I'd like to keep the 2x12 format as opposed to moving to a 4x12.   Do you have speaker recommendations in addition to the EV12's (they're pretty expensive, last time i looked).   Eminence, Scumback, Tone Tubby, Warehouse.

Re: Joe's Marshall cabinets

true.

I know 1960A cabinets come with 75W 12" celestions (stock).  If you're running a half-stack (either 50 or 100 watt), the 'upgrade' in celestions would be the greenback 30W

how does it make sense to assign a speaker that can hold less wattage than the amp can dish out?
wouldnt it make sense to match them up identically? why not just have 500 watt speakers and be done with it?
