Re: What girls like?

Jeff, Joe has repeated the idea that women didn't come to see him in the past because he played so many long, complicated solos...I contend that isn't the case...I understand the esoterics..I'm talking about science when it comes to music perception. I'm overwhelmed by the volume of info out there....But, I've said it many times before..there are certain notes/chords that will elicit groans from women in different parts of the room..I'll try to get more specifics...Ladies, can you site some? Here's another I know works..Albert Cummings "Lonely Bed" around 4:22.... Yeah!              Cathy

Some random thoughts.I will preface this by saying that I am no expert.Over all the years I have known alot of women and there are many who are big music lovers[ex being one,my 5 and 9 year old girls being 2 more.]That being said I would say there have been very few women I have known that have had large music collections. Most have had a small collection of favorites.Thats not to say they didnt love music, its just that there listening habits may be different.I think more women listen to radio for music.Go to any bar/club and whos out there dancing?who's got the most fanatical fans?Bon Jovi,Justin Timberlake,Ricky Martin[ a few years ago].I think there are fewer women who are into the blues scene in general. I think "more" women are into R&B,hip hop,or dance music.Again this is not an all thing ,just a most thing.I will say I have seen many women at concerts over the years,by no means a minority of the audience. So what does it all mean. Got me.

Re: What girls like?

In my college days, I was a young woman really into music, saw loads of live music, especially followed the Byrds, The Band, Little Feat, Jackson Browne, the Dillards (bluegrass); Emmylou Harris; saw Hendrix twice as a high school kid - music was a dominant presence in my life.  Many times, the music of boyfriends became MY music, Dave Mason, Tom Waits, Talking Heads, later Paul McCartney, etc.

After marriage and 2 kids, playing music loud at home or in the minivan was the LAST thing I wanted to do.  The best sound was the sound of silence.  Kids are teenagers now, not to many bands in common... (Is that really me, or am I channeling my own mother, telling the kids to "Turn that down please!")

Then two summers ago it happened.  My husband raved for years about Joe Bonamassa; I ignored opportunities to listen.  Went to a Blues Festival, Hagerstown MD, "Come on, kids, Dad wants us to go, let's humor him."  All four of us, teenage son, daughter, wife, husband, were electrified by Joe's presence.  Imagine bolts of electrical shocks coursing through all of our bodies.  All hooked.  Stunned.  Father proudly played collection of Joe cd's on the ride home.  We frantically searched Youtube for more Joe.  Every vehicle in our family now boasts at least one, if not two, Joe CD's.  My son and I read the forum regularly.

I talked my best friend Ann into coming to the next Joe concert at the Birchmere.  Electrical shocks flowed.  She stumbled out, hooked.  She called several days later - "I bought us tickets to go to Harrisburg in a few weeks if you want to go."  We went, a four-hour round trip drive.  After the show, she said, "His hands, the way he plays so fast, you can almost imagine..."  Well, she didn't finish.  Husband didn't want to imagine.

Another concert later, Rockville, MD, we felt that our Joe fixes were fulfilled - 3 times in June, August and October, that had to be enough, right?  Nah... October to January, too long!

Today I purchased tickets to see Joe in Boulder Station, Vegas, February 2, 2008.  My poor husband will be dragging me and friend Ann from Maryland to Vegas to see Our Joe.   Vegas is fun, a cool place to walk around, sightsee and shop a little, forget the casinos, the peak of the trip will be seeing JB & Co again... hooked.  No delusions that Joe would look at us as anything but kindly hip older women who dig his music - he can't peer into our eyes to see the cool young things we used to be when we were crazy about music in our college days, but we're still lurking in there, don't want to embarrass anyone.  Joe, when you sing "I'm so damn lonely...." those two middle-aged women giving you those little curled finger "Come here, Boy!" signals are meant for our own amusement, not yours!  You bring something back to us.  College campus venues must be the way to go, maybe the Dave Mathews tour will let you send your shockwaves out to young women who don't even know that they love you - yet.   It's not a love of blues, or wild guitar riffs, or specific songs, it's the delivery of the singing and playing - heartfelt, humble, cocky, funny, sincere - a private performance of a modest genuis, backed by solid artists who help showcase this man who is a guitar god who will then smile with wonder at his own brilliance and soak up the applause of an audience stunned into adoration.

So, Joe, girls like you - the package deal, not necessarily the genre, they like how you energize the stage and demonstrate that your music springs from the joy of performing and from your technical perfection.  Fabulous, fun, in Fectious.

Whoo boy, got to stop taking that Ambien so early in the evening, I may have been sleep-raving about Joe, again!  Trying to explain what girls like, not an easy thing to do.

~ Anne

Re: What girls like?

I think some PEOPLE--not just women--don't have the 'music gene'!!! I've had plenty of boyfriends who didn't get moved by music and one who had never even owned any of his own music by the time he was 42 years old!

That said, some serious electric guitar gets me everytime. I love it to be soulful, bluesy, and to move you.

There is a new book just out called Musicology, about, I beleive, the science of people's experience of music. Written by Dr Oliver Sachs, I have not read it yet but got it for my dad for Xmas.

I don't know what yall mean by all the 'mid tone' stuff, but I LOVE the electric guitar solos, ande I also love Joe's soft voice on Sloe Gin and others. Or places in a song where there is a lot of passion in the voice. Or perhaps there is too much about his, and other music that is touching that it's impossible to pin it down to one element.....

Re: What girls like?

First, I have to say I've had the giggles all day, it actually started last night over something else... lol  I don't know what it is about the Bonaladies from Maryland...maybe we're all sisters from another mother, but I think the Maryland Bonaladies Rule!!!!...Anne, you're spot on in so many of your comments..those early days, silence was a premium...I had to give up external noise in exchange for sanity especially during the 3 in diapers and sleep deprivation stage.  My husband turned me on to Joe also...kept telling me to take the CD in my car, I played SILT and ANDY repeatedly for weeks, then saw Joe live in Philly... Yep, Joe's the package deal...the ladies have spoken...My marketing wheels are always turning...how do you market all of this and keep it PG?  wink

Stu...I was asking about the unofficial message board because I was thinking the ladies needed a sidebar to discuss why women bribe men to get to Joe...starts out innocent with chocolate then leads to buying him the ticket, his beer...who knows, what's next??? big_smile  And Cathy's right, you are the MAN...you cover a lot of turf...we appreciate your efforts!

I'm thinking the ladies need a road trip, then maybe a pajama party at Cathy's...my compass is pointing towards Rams Head Live next time around!

I say ALL Bonaladies ROCK! Party?, anytime, come on down! There is a concentration of active forum people in this Mid-Atlantic area.. Joe has a long history in this area. But, he won't be back to the Ram's Head until next autumn.. Once the US tour dates are posted we'll start planning....Girl Power..   Cathy       Angela, Hope you are free from the cast soon!!!!

All I gotta' say on this subject is I think Joe Bonamassa gets an A+ in Chemistry.

Cathy I wasn't aware of that.  The women on this forum are atypical.  Probably why they're here.  Patty said chemistry.  That's really all it is anytime.   No more from me.

Re: What girls like?

It all breaks down to Chemistry and personal preference, one woman's glorious guitar riff is another woman's noise...and if God wanted men and women to respond the same to everything, he would have given women more testosterone.  Like Clapton says, 'the blues is magic'...it oozes emotion!

"Guitar - the soul and backbone of music. Life without the guitar would leave a tremendous void in our lives. Salad always taste better with dressing doesn’t it? Well, think of the salad as life, and the dressing as the guitar. The guitar adds a little flavor to a sometimes bland, mundane life."

Re: What girls like?

Well I bought "Musicology" to read during my travels..I know it's the feelings we get from it that make us all LOVE Joe"s music. I also believe there is some predictable responses to certain tones, but I need to do my research. I appreciate everyone's input and hope the "boys" remember to ask us what we like, don't ass-ume anything! lol   And I'm only cool inbetween hot flashes!              Cathy

Re: What girls like?

Is it true that girls prefer big thick audio???

It would seem to be so based on all the spam I receive......

Re: What girls like?

Back in my radio days I programed an adult contemporary station that targeted 18-34 yr-old women. We were owned by JACOR at the time and they had done some research that indicated a hypersensitivity by women to a particular notch of high-mid frequencies--don't remember the exact numbers/cycles. The theory was that those frequencies estimated the range of the cry of newborns so their moms could hear the baby's cry for food from most anywhere. We pulled those frequencies back in our audio processing so that our sound would be more listenable to women.
