Topic: What girls like?

The latest Joe interview brought this back up again, and this time I feel the need to address it...First some background...When home equilizers first hit the market it was a big deal!! Once I got mine hooked up I started noticing differences in preferances based on sex. My male friends like to boost the ends up and keep the center flat..The females were the opposite..highest in the middle, 1k....Is there a difference in how we experience music based on sex? I don't know..I only know what I experience. I read in another article that Joe concentrates on music in the 1k area...Again, obvious that I'm not a player....Is freq. related to tone? What I do know is that Joe's tone, the time he spends in the 3-4th fret, all seem to be what got me in my gut when I first heard him....Now, he seems to think that melody is what will bring the female audiences, not his guitar riffs.....For me, and I'm as much of a girl as the next, those tones, that concentration on mid-tones..that's the grabber.....Please share your thoughts. I'm in need of "edumacatin" Thanks Cathy

Yes there is, but I can't seem to find an appropriate area in this forum to discuss it wink

Re: What girls like?

HMMMMMM, sex?  gender?  Stu's funny.  Maybe since most vocals are midrange, there's your first clue.  Maybe women seem to be more conversation oriented, "...talk  to me?"  Dirty or otherwise.  Share, share, share.

If you can sing your most emotionally in G (3rd) or A (5th fret), thats where the most impact will be felt, (heard).

Tone can compose of the mix, match & overlay of many frequencies.  That's not a very good explanation but I'm hurt for time.

As far as gut grabbing goes, here's the ticket.  All music but especially blues is about telling a story, promoting a feeling.  Blues esp. is about tension & release.  Hence one of my previous statements about the blues is a feeling.  A melody sung with passion by voice or horn, piano or guitar that creates tension such as a minor third before the resolve creates tension.  There's tons more.  I'm sure others can tell more.

I should listen to the interview before I post again more to be more specific.

Guitar riffs will do it for me.
However my experience with my friends who are female is that they have very little
interest in music of any kind - it's just not a priority for them.  It's not just Joe's music,
it's any music.

Re: What girls like?

Its funny because when Joe came to boston last I asked my friend how liked the show.  We said he played great, ect. but then when we started discussing his tone we were like.  Its REALLY midrangy, its those boutique amps that give those really smooth mids.  I've said it before and I'll say it again, i think Joe's best tone was on the ANDY Live show.  But yeah, funny you should talk about mids when his tone has gotten extremely midrangy as of late, a possible strategy from Mr. Bonamassa?

Don´t know why - but some women don´t seem to have a "music gene" or they listen to complete crap just because it has a catchy tune. But everyone has his/her own taste, so why worry?! smile

Joe, we discussed the girls - topic a few months ago, so would you please notice that there are some strange female beings on this planet (a lot of them participating in this forum) who like to hear a good, rocking guitar riff even if it contains "8 million notes of guitar playing that only dudes will be into" wink.

You rock and we love you for that!

Re: What girls like?

his guitar riffs do it for me......but then again, so does everything else he does.  smile

this may be waaayyyy off topic and considered "too much information" to share, but at his november show at rams head live, and (excuse my bluntness for any delicate folk on the board), but i can honestly say hearing joe play some of those guitar riffs literally almost made me have an orgasm. i mean, seriously. i'm not just saying that for dramatic effect. i was just standing there in a trance watching him and feeling that music, and then he would go into his incredibly passionate, emotionally energetic solos, i just felt like i was transported into another dimension and i just felt it, i mean really just FELT it through the core of my entire being, and from the tips of my toes to the top of my head, i had this incredible, indefinable tingling that went through my whole body and i thought i was gonna just gush with pleasure. it really was beautifully, awesomely orgasmic. oh my. i'm wiping my brow just thinking of it.  ahh, so yeah...don't think it matters what joe does, he gets it done for this gal.  smile  whoo hoo!

one of my friends reluctantly went with me (he's my best friend's hubby---i drag him to every show i go to), and i bought his ticket and all his beers just to convince him to go with me 'cause i didn't want to go alone. he never heard of joe bonamassa and was convinced the show was gonna suck. needless to say he watched the entire show with his jaw hanging to the floor, and on the ride home his only response was "did we just witness that live???" it was astounding.  he went out and bought 2 of joe's cd's the next day.

Re: What girls like?

Cathy and Stu-thanks for the laugh....LMAO...just hit me real funny...could be my current situation that I'm not doing my hour in the gym...I'm being denied that endorphin release or could it be I'm in a What Do Women Want mood since I just watched Mel in that movie, funny movie...yeah, I know everyone has disdain for Mel now, but this movie was before that bizarre outburst...

Back to your question Cathy, I'm gonna' have to think about that before I type, re-read the interview & try to stay focused on the question...sometimes all the techie guitar talk sends me in another direction. tongue Could one of the guitar players give me a basic definition of phrasing (referencing guitar playing) Thanks.

Eva-you calling me strange? big_smile

Re: What girls like?

I don't know what captures most women's interest in music since they're from Venice and I'm from Mars. I do know that when my nursie friend Mary and I are listening to live music I can always tell when the music touches her music gene/nerve if I look over and see has her eyes closed and swayin' with the beat. Then I'll ask, did you like that one? and get a big oh yeah. Subtle hints when it comes to sharing some music with her. Us guys need all the hints we can get. It helps when they e-mail a list of what they like too.

Well said Eva - 8 million notes of guitar playing is what some of us strange females like to
hear.  If the shows are well attended who cares if the audience is male or female.  I notice
that most of the blues shows I go to - Trout, Sardinas, Duarte etc are filled with more men than women, but so what?  As long as the place is full....Changing style to appeal to women
and maybe losing some of the male audience makes no sense to me.  Jaci

Re: What girls like?

Stu..You are such a MAN! lol  More clarity, (because I should be doing housework instead)...I also believe the increase in female attendees is due to more exposure, nothing else. I'd have been there screaming along with all the man if I'd have known about Joe earlier. I just feel so much music lives "In the middle of the road"..good stuff, catchy lyrics, "pretty"...but it's that visceral feeling I'm talking about. Joe's music "vibrates" at just the right spot for me..I don't play so I can't name the chords or the tuning, but, there are notes/chords that Joe hits that cause me to moan just like Sunnyskies! Ex. 5:36 on "Sloe Gin", I think that's why I miss the overdub guitar at shows...the tone of those riffs is PERFECT....Another 3:25 in "So many Roads" from You & Me. Another is Chris Duarte's Blue Velocity, song "Something Wicked" solo around 5:30 on....part of it seems to be 2strings at once, sliding down to the flat? I don't know what it is, I just know it works. I just don't want Joe to think ladies aren't there for the guitar..He would be SO wrong....Cathy

No, I let that go. Between the website, chat room and message board the monthly fees were starting to add up. I did give Jane a heads-up prior though, so she could copy/paste all of the "Bonaglossary" to a safe place...

Re: What girls like?

Thanks Jane...Then I googled "hearing differences" and HOLY COW! My computer's too slow to check them all...I do remember a Sunday Morning segment about a well known music producer who started a research section on the differences in sound perceptions but I can't remember if it was Stanford or Berkley?  My brain is getting very tiny!      Cathy

Re: What girls like?

OK, I read the interview.

This is what I would've meant if I had made that statement.  I'm probably not TOO far off.

I'm a blues man.  I play with a feeling.  I want an emotional connection with my audience.  If you look at a "Shredder's" typical audience, you will see mostly males and techno-geeks...average age 15...

"Who wouldn't want cute girls in the audience?" assuming that I'm a full grown, natural born, red bloooded man.  The very first time I saw Joe I wrote a review in which I stated:  ...he's no shredder.  Every note he plays means something!"

I did not read anywhere in there that he would change his style (other than a natural evolution) for some ulterior motive.  Now I might tell a woman anything (wink) but I didn't read where Joe would.

People, it's Blues.  It is a feeling.  It is not just notes thrown at you.  To achieve that empathy, that emotion, that orgasmic pitch takes some homework and is almost impossible to explain to some ***** interviewer.

I want to expand my audience without selling out, says Joe.  I believe him.

AS far as the LesPaul sound thing versus that scratchy, brittle, guitar screech, IMHO we all have to grow up sometime.  Natural evolution, maturing if you will...

One mo thang:  Tones are frequencies.  Frequencies are vibrations.  Vibrations resonate.  I know I'm tuned to a certain pitch.  I resonate when you push that button that plays my music.
