Topic: Bonnie Raitt (again)

A search last night revealed that there was no Bonnie topic here, which amazed me no end and made me determined to rectify this shocking oversight.

I'm not going to try and repeat what I wrote last night about my history with Bonnie, because I had the blues then - and I don't right now. In a nutshell, I've been heavily into Bonnie since the early 70's and she also became my late wife's most favorite artist.

Youtube is full of fantastic clips of Bonnie with other stars and I really hope people will post their own special songs here. I'll start with my late wife's favorite number of all time-  http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=8irv4mAYw … re=related

I still get moist every time I listen to this - http://nl.youtube.com/watch?v=8irv4mAYw … re=related

Yeah, Bonnie is a class of her own ... I love the Slide guitar anyway, but Bonnie is something special (and she´s a woman wink ).

I just love it!

Re: Bonnie Raitt (again)

"Call me an angel, that flies from Montgomery..." Yes George, Bonnie is in a class of her own. Back in the 70's there were not female guitar players like there are today. And none that, to this day, come close to her in slide abilities. As I wrote last night, before it disappeared, today's blues players own her BUNCHES! She had John Lee Hooker with her in the 70's and I'm certain it led others, besides me, to the blues. And, she's still working for the genre. All Hail Bonnie!    Cathy

Re: Bonnie Raitt (again)

Hi George and everyone,
I have so much to say about Bonnie, I almost don't know where to start big_smile...George, Bonnie's been mentioned many, many times on here, but I guess she never had her own thread.  Alot of the stuff I say is starting to repeat, so either I've been blabbing here too long or the established long time readers need to skip over me. smile

First...on Joe's old forum, there use to be a guitar test, where you had to guess the guitarists by looking at a photo of their guitar and hands without showing  their faces...Bonnie was one of them.  Also, Joe mentioned both Bonnie Raitt and Susan Tedeschi very favorably previously.

I actually started listening to Bonnie's father first, John Raitt, since my Mom was a huge fan & had extensive musical training herself and absolutely adored that man. (Think Oklahoma) We grew up less than 2 hours from New York City so my parents frequented broadway shows.  My parents had a huge vinyl collection of Broadway shows, the Big Bands, Frank, Dean all those classics...I can recite lots of those broadway show tunes, but the funniest one to us kids at the time was South Pacific...I'm Gonna' Wash That Man Right Out of My Hair, later came to understand what that meant....
http://www.google.com/musica?aid=CHHMG3 … ;ct=result  My mom was really concerned for John's health the last time she saw him perform and she took his death to heart, she loved him that much!  Bonnie's Dad was a huge influence on Bonnie and by just a few words that hit hard, finally got Bonnie to give up drinking. (George, I copied you a couple of cool articles coming your way)  Bonnie lost both of her parents in a short time and her brother developed a brain tumor, so the last couple of years have been emotional for her, which overflowed into her music.

My oldest brother, 2 years older than me, is responsible for the core of music I still listen to.  He brought home, Give It Up, Bonnie's 2nd release (1972 I think) and I have been hooked every since.  Bonnie lived in the northeast (Boston area) and came up and down the eastern seaboard in the early years, especially when she hooked up with Freebo, who had his own band in Philadelphia. She's very witty and from a woman's prescpective, she says it like it is and has been on both sides of heartache and breakup.  I love when her voice gets gravely, almost like she needs to clear it...she's just tops in my book!  I' ve seen her several times, just love her!!  Cathy, lucky you, never saw her with John Lee Hooker, but their stuff together....well all s's apply...just sizzles...:P

The last 2 times I saw Bonnie were only a couple months apart, the tour for Souls Alike and the VH1 Classic show in Atlantic City, which is an excellent DVD with special guests Keb'Mo', Norah Jones, Allyson Krause (sp)  and Ben Harper.  My Give It Up album cover was signed by Bonnie with some thankful fan comments...I framed it.  I didn't get to meet her, but bid on tickets to do a meet and greet and lost. (Next time maybe I'll get Stu's advice with odds etc. ) An employee delivered a package to her along with some CD's of Joe's that Jim M. got signed for me.  It's no secret that I'd love to see Bonnie Raitt and Joe share the stage someday or collaborate musically...!!!  Bonnie isn't the first blues lady on the scene, but I feel when it comes to guitar playing, she opened the door for lots of the badass women out there today.   Bonnie's music nursed me through my first broken heart, so she's just extra special all the way around!

My Mom's almost 80, she's requested that she would like to accompany me to the next Bonnie show, sounds like a plan. smile

Road Tested is excellent Ges...the DVD is an excellent example of a show.

Re: Bonnie Raitt (again)

Bonnie Raitt. I love her ...as Angela will testify smile. Favourite song has to be the live Road Tested version of I Can't Make You Love Me with it's soaring vocals that never fail to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. My daughter has a signed photo that Bonnie sent her some years ago when she was quite ill after an accident. I wrote to Bonnie and the photo turned up around a week later....and it brought a big smile to my daughters face. I've only seen her once. Would've been twice but couldn't go so I gave the front row tickets to my sister and she sat right in front of Bonnie......jealous??? me???? smile

Re: Bonnie Raitt (again)

Bonnie Raitt certainly is a pretty special lady, and quite deserving of much respect... her voice and lyrics can cut right through to the soul and really stir up emotions.  The Bonnie Raitt Collection has been high on my list of all-time favorite CDs for almost 20 years now... love ALL those songs, and many others too.  Unfortunately, I've only had the chance to see her perform live once, back in the mid-90s in Hershey PA... but that show ranks somewhere up there in my top 10 or 15 favorite concerts ever... plus Bruce Hornsby opened, and they played together some too... it was great.

Hey Vik I was at that show!!! Wasn't it also Lyle Lovett? That was when she was married to the actor and he was with her. She spent alot of time at the piano doing ballads that night. (I'm a bigger guitar fan.)...Hope she comes around soon..Cathy

Hey gsj, you might find it hard to believe, but your favorite tune of hers was written by a former Cincinnati Bengals defensive end named Mike Reid who played in the 70's. Mike Reid wrote a lot of songs mostly for country artists, but Bonnie sold over 6 million copies of that song alone. I'll bet that was a nice boost to his NFL pension. Bonnie also learned her slide guitar style from the late great Lowell George from Little Feat. My ex-wife and mother in law are huge Bonnie fans and we saw many of her shows. My 2 favorites were Bonnie opening for SRV and another where Bruce Hornsby opened for Bonnie. The show with Bruce was memorable since it was the same week that Jerry Garcia passed away and Bruce played Jerry's song Sugaree and there wasn't a dry eye in the house maybe because the show was in the SF Bay Area. Bruce was a temp. keyboard player for the Grateful Dead for about 6 months prior to Jerry's passing. I believe Road Tested was recorded at a series of shows she did here at the Paramount Theater in Oakland, Ca.

Fantastic, George ! Love Aretha, love the song, love all three of them smile

"Road tested" is also my favourite ... especially "Angel from Montgomery" like Cathy and the solo on "Love me like a man".

Re: Bonnie Raitt (again)

Yep J Dawg, Bonnie sure has a knack of picking a good song and making it her own. I've been playing a lot of Little Feat lately and I wear my Lowell George t-shirt with pride wink

Re: Bonnie Raitt (again)

About songwriting and covering songs---when Souls Alike came out Bonnie was featured in this magazine I never read before...Performing Songwriter, great magazine, tons of interesting stuff.  It was from Sept/Oct of 05' and I just dug it out to copy the Bonnie article for George, but ended up re-reading lots of the articles including one on Les Paul and Alice Cooper.  And dawg, Bonnie always mentions Lowell, she loved him...great inspiration.

Bonnie does alot of killler covers and this article talks about how many songs artists send her, they just pile up...sometimes on first hearing them, she just knows she has to cover it since the lyrics are so powerful and mean so much to her.  I love how Bonnie invites musicians to accomapny her and put a different spin on some of her songs. Sometimes she just can't write songs that speak to her as much as some of these others songs she receives.  I wonder if anyone else has tuned in to Tangled and Dark, I just LOVE that song written by Bonnie.  There were lots of songs about water on Souls Alike which tied into Bonnie's love of New Orleans and then the outcome of Katrina.  The song I mentioned to Jeff in another thread God Was in the Water was written by former Allman Brothers/Gregg collaboraters-Randall Bramblett and Davis Causey.  Anyone have Sea Level in their old collection?

Re: Bonnie Raitt (again)

This is all so incestuous! big_smile

Thanks to Angela, gsj and Dawg for the wonderful and interesting input on my main lady! Certainly, one of the reasons I love Bonnie so much is because of the Lowell George connection. Up until Lowell's untimely death, the Feat were my main band, even ahead of the Dead!!!

If someone can point me at a site that hosts music files, I will gladly upload a couple of gems I have of Bonnie with the Feat.

Rock on! cool

P.S. Angela, my anticipation is slowly building to fever pitch!

Encore - Lowell, Bonnie and Emmylou - makes me literally go weak in the knees.

Re: Bonnie Raitt (again)

Feat were one of my main bands too, with Lowell George off course. After his death it was over for me.

Angela I have some radio live recordings from at least 20 years ago on cassette from Sea Level very good show. Can put it on Cd if you want.
Because of Chuck Leavell I followed them.

From Bonnie Raitt I bought the LP Sweet Forgiveness but It was not my kind of music so I stopped buying her music. Maybe I should give it another chance after all your positive reactions!

Hmmm... maybe she played Hershey more than once in the 90s, because I definitely don't remember Lyle Lovett!  And when I saw her, most of the piano work was handled by Bruce Hornsby.  This was after Bruce had run a stint with the Grateful Dead while they were between keyboardists, and during his jamming their influence was apparent, and he even broke into a couple stanzas of Dead song... I'm not sure too many people in that audience even caught it... I automatically yelled out "Grateful Dead!" and everyone turned and looked at me like I was nuts, lol.  Oh yeah, another memorable thing about that show was the hundreds of moths that were dive-bombing the stage the whole time... poor Bonnie got the worst of it, being right in the spotlight and all... she was a trooper and just made jokes about them, but I thought she'd never come back to Hershey again!  (It musta just been the wrong day of the year, because I've been to many Hershey shows, and that was the only one with a moth problem.)

Re: Bonnie Raitt (again)

Angela, yes I have two LP's by Sea Level, really loved their style, kinda like jazz meets southern rock. Chuck Leavell on the keyboards was the anchor of that band. Gotta dig them out after the games are over and listen to some Shake A Tail Feather.
