Topic: Close down the "Golden Gate Bridge"

Hi yall...over here in northern California, we are getting pounded with one of the nastiest storms to hit in years!!....with winds up to "hurricane force"...it is tearing us up...I deliver mail to the O.E.S. (of of emergency services) headquarters for the entire state....they have everybody on alert and stand by....got some inside info from one of the head honchos yesterday....all i can say is thank god we live in an area that the've spent millions on in the last decade....we were on the news worldwide a few years ago for all the flooding that occured....I got the day off today!....I offfered the boss to come in and work (wife called me dummy!)....but she has no approval to do so....the stupid postal service is so "micro managed", that it takes the approval of 3 people above our postmaster to bring someone in on there day off!!....anyways, there talking about closing down the Golden Gate Bridge for only the 4th time since it opened in 1937...

Got go...think i just saw the garbage cans fly down the street!!

I saw this on the news and knew you guys would be nailed. How many FEET of snow are they calling for in the SNs? The upside? is that it's bringing warmer air to us...so come on over! Have a good inside day Shred..do the Honey List and reap the rewards! Sister Cate

Deb and I just got in from picking up all the garbage cans in the court, it trash day, we lined them all in a row so the garbage man had an easier time, we saw him jumping in and out of his truck down the street....you talk about a cardio workout...this poor guy is working his tail off!!...my 75 yearold neighbor called an hour ago...she saw my truck in the driveway...her fence is going to be in her pool quick...gonna have to put a few "deadmen" down to hold it up...no sis...not literally...it's like a graveyard stake you might see in a old western movie...it will keep the fence  up until she can have it repaired after the storm....it's got to be blowing 50 mph outside!!

Re: Close down the "Golden Gate Bridge"

Hey Shred,

I'm no stranger to those hurricane force winds. We were hit with three of them in the same year a few years back (Charlie, Jeanne & Francis). And believe me, it's no fun and it's damn scary when they come thru your town.  You and Deb stay inside and be safe until it's all over.  Like Roy said, our forum only has one Shred.

Well it's 1:30pm and the winds have died down to about 25 mph at least here in Benicia. This morning I was watching the news and they reported about 150,000 people without power all over the Bay Area and growing. A report from the Sierra's had the wind at 150 mph at the summit of Squaw Valley and 100 at the lodge in the valley, needless to say the lifts aren't operating. they expect 6-10 feet of snow by Sun. and we,ve been getting an inch of rain an hr. in the lowlands. Better give Bluezman Darryl and RPIC a call since they live in Sonoma Co. one of the first places to flood around here, they might need my kayak. I'll just say it's been a good day to hunker down at home and stay dry.

PS the last I heard the Golden Gate remained open.

Re: Close down the "Golden Gate Bridge"

Those Florida hurricanes took a year off my life...I have tons of relatives down there, 2 brothers and a sister, lots of cousins etc. from Boca Raton, the Palm Beaches up to Stuart!  I think my sister will take the kids & leave the hubby behind next time he wants to stay...they were the ones you see on the news, the whole neighborhood left but them!!! Jeff, check out Bonnie Raitt's ...God Was In The Water that day...from Soul's Alike.

I hope I never have to live thru those kind of storms again.  There was actually 4 hurricanes that year.  Don't forget Ivan.  He didn't come thru Orlando but he made his way up the gulf coast thru Pensacola and destroyed my niece's apartment.  Charlie pulled one of my Oak trees up by the roots and laid it down on my fence.  Then Jeanne or Francis (I can't remember) took out one of my two big Sycamore trees.   We didn't evacuate.  Nobody did.  Hurricanes don't come thru Orlando. HA!!!  We were one of the lucky ones.  Yes Jeff, I bebember dat!

Susan:
I was in South Miami when Andrew hit, and a few 30 years before that.  Yowsir, hot, humid and mosquitos the size of stealth bombers.  But then that year we got 4 right up the backside (Charlie) started that mess.

I had a vision of daveshred holding down neighbor ladies fence and I got cold chills remembering holding Charlie out of my daughters southwest corner bedroom by "THE FORCE."  Don't tell me we are not heirs to the throne.  I channeled that day.

2 dogs, 2 cats, 3 kids & the wife in an interior bathroom and me looking out an uncovered window at the storm.  Got out when the wind let up and we looked at the roof over her bedroom.  It was buckled.  Ms.Tia looked at me and said, is that where you were?  Yes was all I said.

That probably sounds like I made it up.  I'll take lucky then.

Much Love and gratitude
Jeff

Susan, I never made the connection when the names for these hurricanes came along, but my dad's name was Charles aka Charlie, and my mom's was Jeanne Frances. I guess the feminine spelling of Francis. Not that it means anything, but it just grabbed my attention. I'm watchin' the 11 o'clock news, 195,000 still in the dark tonight around the battered Bay Area.

Re: Close down the "Golden Gate Bridge"

Ah...peace and tranquility in the state capital right now....but, we got another storm due to hit in a few hours....tore us up real good yesterday.....hey Jeff, Angela, Susan...I dont know how you guys made it through the storms...I remember seeing them on the TV and thinking...man,I'm happy I dont live there...but now i know some of you...and I really feel for you..had to be frightening for sure....Andre, Cathy, Roy...dont worry bout me...I'm a survivor....remember my neighbor yesterday...the 75 year old lady who's fence I propped up..well she called again late last night...water flooded the north side of her house... must have had 2 inches of water on the rug and bathroom floor...wasnt the roof like she thought....I talked to my General Contractor late last night (JDAWG)...I'm going to have to dig a trench this morning about 40 feet long, drop the level around her foundation and redirect her drown spout....her son in-law is coming over to help, but the poor guy has the flu....so it might be one heck of a cardio workout this morning...well see!

Peace to all...Dave **wheres my coffee**

Glad you guys are getting a break. Shred, you are a special guy for the way you look after your neighbor. Good Karma coming your way! Remember, you're almost 50 (1/17), so don't over do it...Proud to be your Bona-sis, Cathy

Re: Close down the "Golden Gate Bridge"

JDawg, Shredit, Deb, and anyone else caught in the west coast storms,

I hope you all are doing ok today.  I heard the levee broke on or near the Nevada border and the monster storm system was still pretty severe from Washington State to Souther Cal thru tomorrow.  You guys stay safe and hunker down.  Nothing worse than tree branches and garbage cans flying down the street.  Seriously.
