I can relate Nick, but you know 75% of all people do not make it to 92 years, so for the other survivors, the 25%, it's all gravy (please don't take as a flippant response) My last surviving grandparent is 93, and she is here today...Tomorrow? Her husband is gone 34 years ago, and he was a card playing, black coffee drinking fool who taught me both ways...This following is a true story: I was driving (circa 1998) and thinking about BOTH playing cards and drinking black coffee with Grandpa and got the tears when I was thinking about the past doing them with him.  Then I got noiseless bawling tears (the kind guys get) thinking and HOPING & PRAYING I could get to heaven and do them with grandpa there.  I was a tad over the speed limit in a small podunk Upstate New York Village at 2:30 a.m. & got pulled over. I told the policeman I was thinking (not crying) about my grandfather and got the "Tell it to the judge" line (although he was no way rude, just curt & straightforward). I wrote a letter to the judge, showed up in court and had it magically changed into a parking thing with no fine. The lyric in a song captured a real event and tugs me every time now, and for myself, who better than Joe Bonamassa delivering it with the assist from Himmelstein?!

P.S.-The part about asking around for "you" (grandpa) also entered into those thoughts that tearful night...

You know Nic, he waited for you. I see this alot in Hospice. Your Grandpa was ready and just had one more good-bye. My Mother turns 90 on January 22nd. Hard to imagine. Just remember he had a full life and how lucky you were to have him for so long..He'll always be with you. As they say here.. a big forum hug to you!        Cathy

Nic,
My heart goes out to you, too.  I was touched by your tribute "Grandpa" on your website.  What a fine young man you must be.  I'll keep you in my thoughts.

Re: For those who have lost a loved one

Nick, I feel for you and hereby send you a virtual hug!

Dave, you have mail.

Cathy, I can confirm your theory from my own experience. My mother had all sorts of ailments from her early 80's and I prepared myself for her departure by making sure that the important stuff got said every time I saw her - she lived in Vienna, about 800 miles from here.

As she kept miraculously recovering from every affliction, I began to think that she'd live to be 100 after all (long-running family joke). After she turned 94, she started visibly deteriorating, but constantly told anyone who would listen that she was determined to reach her 95th birthday at all costs.

The entire family was there in her hospital room on her 95th birthday, Aug. 30, 2005. She sat in a chair, ate a few bites of cake and even had a sip of champagne, she was positively beaming!

The very next day, as I was driving to the hospital to see her, she closed her eyes and quietly went to sleep. She had, by sheer force of will, achieved her goal. Can you imagine a more fantastic way of going?

thanks for the support you guys.  Having "asking around for you" on the homepage is something I can watch and think of my grandpa while I jam along.

I think that today is a particular day when we all might pause for a moment -

and give thanks for the loved ones who are still with us...

and remember those who are not.

To lose a loved one is truly painful but the joy of knowing them will one day return to fill you with the strength to carry on and pay daily tribute to their memory. Hang in there bud it does get more bearable.

It's nine months today, and it hasn't yet got to the point where I can understand why I'm here and she isn't. Doesn't seem right. She was a saint and I'm a sinner.

Re: For those who have lost a loved one

Amsterhammer, that's just how I feel sometimes. Why do, in general, good people die and leave the bad ones on earth for a while? It doesn't seem fair sometimes, but on a positive note, I'm pretty sure God called them because they were good. Your wife must have been a truly remarkable person, and I'm sure you are too and you will see her again. She is there...don't worry. Hang in there. smile
