Re: BluesWax Review of Sloe Gin

Would it be such an awful thing anyway? Is it the first song to contain the F word? At least Joe changed it so as not to offend. Blues Wax should know more than most that so many of the old blues songs were based around sexual inuendo and contained some pretty strong lyrical suggestions. Lemon Song anyone?

Re: BluesWax Review of Sloe Gin

Wow, just listened to the Doug Henthorn version...............
maybe I am slanted in my view, but I think Joe's version is hands down better vocally.  Especially when he sings....'I hate to go home alone, but what else is new'......................just gets me everytime!!
Thanks for posting the link, I love to hear the variations in this recording.
Thanks for writing in to the reviewer for Joe.

Well said Jim.  Blues is a feeling.  I listen to all manner of sin & sickness in the form of people who play blues tunes, but it ain't blues.  I play a James Brown tune or an Otis Redding tune and the band makes it BLUES.

Yes, bigjeff, you put into words what I've been thinking.  Blues is a feeling.  Like Langston Hughes poetry or the history of African Americans struggling through slavery and the Civil Rights struggle, it is this feeling born of struggle and suffering that makes the Blues.  Limiting the music of the Blues to the particulars of the 12 bar structure or whatever is like saying the English language should have stopped evolving during Chaucer's time.  This feeling is why I like the black sheep blues music of Joe Bonamassa and Robben Ford, in addition to the old "dyed-in-the-wool" blues as well.  The Blues might as well have a big tent so it invites everybody in, rather than purifying the membership down to meeting in a phone booth by alienating everyone who has a slightly different slant on it.

Re: BluesWax Review of Sloe Gin

I just listened to that Doug Henthorn version too... now there might be times when I'd be in the right mood for that one, but generally speaking I definitely prefer Joe's vocals, and the changes he made.  And I can see why a reviewer would point out the f-bomb... it's a shame he didn't have the correct version for that review.  Has anybody now actually sent him the correct version?  And maybe pointed out that Joe is sensitive to his younger, more impressionable listeners?  I'm reminded of that post about how he chose to tell version B of some woman story after spotting a youngster in the audience.

Thanks Jane...but what is this?  This guy just sang over the Joe version....or did Joe not sing on the verion that BluesWax got?  I am very confused

The track was originally recorded with Doug Henthorn singing the original lyrics. Kevin Shirley wanted to try it that way. As you can probably tell, that version would never have flown and Joe re-recorded the vocals with the modified lyrics. So while some thought the CD was finished (and may have let a copy or two get out for PR) it was not. That could explain how it got out for press review.   That may not be the exact course of events but pretty damn close to that.

Personally, I prefer Joe's voice to any others for the title track anyway. And I'd rather not have the "F bomb" in it because I don't see the point of having that in it in the first place. When you're lonely, you're damn lonely. I prefer to use the "F" word in a different context. Like pointing out the error of someone cutting me off on the freeway without even the courtesy of using their directional signal. Now THAT deserves the "F bomb" and a hand gesture!! It's all a matter of weighting. lol

well one thing is out of this i am going to explore some more blues because i want to hear the original version of Jelly Roll. It sounded to me like the comment about that song was saying that there was something wrong with the way Joe did it? or maybe it made it not ok or not blues? maybe i when hear the song i will get what that was supposed to mean.

Jane,
The original "Jelly Roll" is difficult to find because the song is called "The Easy Blues" by John Martyn, the songwriter. It's on the album "Solid Air" - you can find it on Amazon and hear a snippet. Here's a link: http://www.amazon.com/Solid-Air-John-Ma … amp;sr=1-1
To me, Joe's version is actually very similar.

Don't tell me there's inaccuracy in the written words of a magazine or newspaper? Oh my gosh, what are we going to do? Does this mean I shouldn't believe everything in the National Enquirer? Oh the pain of it all! What am I going to do?  Next you're probably going to tell me that Nixon ACTUALLY erased those missing 18 minutes of taped conversation! Oh woe is me...........

Hey, we all realize that there's politics in anything that's printed on any piece of paper in this country, except maybe a cook book. We all know there's no "F bomb" on the Sloe Gin album, but we can't control the idiots in the media who report inaccurate things everyday. Just my 2 cents......

Could be worse, Classic Rock Magazine put in their review that Jerry Shirley produced 'Sloe Gin'. Now Jerry Shirley is/was a great drummer with Humble Pie, but he isn't KEVIN. At least it was an honest mistake, due to it being the first promo that was sent out. The biggest mistake was only giving it a 7/10, in my opinion.
