I was watching the 2007 Farm Aid concert on PBS the other day and I got a little tease of Derek and Susan playing together.  Ron, I see what you mean about them cueing off each other.  I can't wait to see them live.  Looks like I'm in for a real treat.  It also looks like Scrapomatic will be opening for them in Orlando.

I'm really looking forward to this show.  Just twelve more days.   big_smile

Farm Aid or Crossroads?

I haven't seen Crossroads yet.  It was Farm Aid.  She played a song with the Derek Trucks Band.

I was just saying that because she plays with Derek on Crossroads, and that's been on PBS lately.

Sorry  Deezer,  She is  on the 2007 Farm Aid, but it  was on HDNET, not PBS.  I'll have to check out Crossroads.  I've only seen bits and pieces of it.

Hey Susan.  You must try to check out the Crossroads dvd to watch Derek and Susan perform.  They put on an amazing performance together, however, the best part for me is when the camera pans over to Bill Murray (he introduces the bands that day) and you see his facial expressions..........he is COMPLETELY blown away watching and listening to them perform.

So Susan, did you get the DVD of Crossroads?  If so, what did you think of Derek's and Susan's performance?  Hope you enjoy the show at the HOB!  We just got tickets for the Fox Theatre for the 31st in Atlanta...
Should be some excellent shows.

Indeed.  Just got the DVD in the mail yesterday.  Haven't had a chance to watch it yet. The show is Saturday night, so I will  definately make time to check it out before then.

So, you're going to the Atlanta show?  You get to see the North Mississippi Allstars too.  I look forward to a show report.

Re: Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi - Soul Stew Revival

All I can say is WOW!!!  What an incredibly fun night.  I saw my 2nd favorite guitar player in the world last night. (We all know who No. 1 is).  We hooked up with some friends from Tampa outside the HOB and when the doors opened, we headed up to the front of the stage.  Scrapomatic opened up the show.  They are very good, but making it better, Susan came out and sang one song with them.  Scrapomatic played a funky rendition of Prince's "1999",  and it took me half the song to realize what they were playing.  Very cool song.

With Susan's smokey vocals and Derek's amazing slide work, I knew I was in for a treat and I was. I was not familiar with all the music, but every song was so good. The rest of the band was not to shabby either.  First, there's vocalist Mike Mattison, who shared the stage with Susan. Then there was a great flute solo by the keyboardist Kofi Burbridge, then there was the great saxophone work (Ron Holloway).  Not to mention the two drummers (Yonrico Scott and Duane Trucks),  percussionist (Count M'Butu) and bass player (Todd Smallie).

After the show, I was handed a very cool artistic set list of the show by someone on the stage.  We went over to the bar and ordered a drink and Kofi Burdridge came over and talked to us.  He also signed my set list.  Then, we walked outside and decided to walk around backstage. Nobody stopped us and before you know it, we were outside the bus and ran into Susan.  We shook hands and talked to her for a minute and she also signed my set list.  Then we saw Derek on the bus.  With a little coaxing, he came out.  I shook his hand and talked to him for a little while.  He also signed my set list. I told him I saw him play at a club in the Orlando area called the Junkyard when he was a kid.  He sort of chuckled and said "Yeah, that was in Casselberry. I was playing with those Blues guys".

We took a few pictures of the show with my cell phone.  Also took one of the set list.  Some are pretty fuzzy, but no cameras were allowed in.  They are best viewed by clicking on "Slideshow".

Enjoy,

Hey Susan.  Great to hear you had a fun time at the show.  I am right there with you on Derek.  In my opinion he is the best slide guitar player out there today.  He just knows how to jam.  He is simply amazing.  Talk about a memorable night out at a show you got to meet Susan, Kofi and Derek.  WOW is right!!!!!  I am going to have to catch a show of Susan's if she ever comes to Pittsburgh.  She does have a lot of soul.  Their set lists are pretty cool.  I happened to get one from the first Derek Trucks show I went to in May.  Loved that you got yours signed.:)

Ah, tonight's the night for us! New Year's Eve, Derek, Susan, Scrapomatic, and North Mississippi All Stars... I could not be happier!!!!!!!

I'm glad you enjoyed the show!!! Susan is definitely at the top of female (and many male) blues guitarists/vocalists!!!

Just helping to spread the word about going to see GOOD bands and GOOD live music as often as possible!!!

Try to see them perform together if you can.  Derek grew up in Florida and he used to frequently play the Orlando area.  I think I read he first picked up a guitar at the age of 9.  Ken and I first saw him on stage at the age of 12.  That was 14 or 15 years ago and we've seen him a few times since.  His playing never ceases to amaze us.  But, Susan adds a whole new dimension to the show.  Her voice is incredible and it's great watching them together.

This is an interesting article about them.  They now have 2 kids and I guess performing together has been their way of juggling 2 careers and keeping the family together.  I think it's a brilliant idea.

A bit off topic, but I also wanted to mention that I have watched the Eric Clapton Crossroads DVD about 3 times now.  Lots of great performances, but if I had to pick my very favorite performance on that DVD, it would have to be Jeff Beck with Tal Wilkenfeld on bass.  So, David, Barbara, Deezer, anyone else, what was your favorite performance on that DVD?

Hey Susan, thanks for the great review.  You gave us something to really look forward to tonight!  We have seen both of them on multiple shows and they are great for sure!  Derek plays an awesome slide and Susan's voice is amazing.  That is great that you got to meet them and got the setlist.  I got one once and it is a piece of art.  Glad you got the dvd of crossroads, some really good performances, we like Derek's set and Eric with Stevie.
