Topic: John Lee Hooker box set

Just got this for Christmas. I suggest you buy it. 84 tracks of nothing but pure Hooker. The first attempt to put together a career-spanning set including gathering stuff that was from his pseudonyms he would use (Texas Slim, John Lee Booker, Boogie Man, ect.). It's f'in amazing. It's only 36 bucks on amazon. So what are you waiting for? GO AHEAD AND GET IT YOU PUTZ!

Especially for some of you novices to the blues, or are just only familiar with guys like Joe. Get in there and get in deep. As good a place to start as any.

Re: John Lee Hooker box set

Thank you Deezer!  I'm giving my age away.  John Lee, guttural, sensuous, gut level blues from the bottoms.  Yeah a good place to start.  All the muzak warbling wimps need to get a set and open their mind.

A story:  One Friday night about 11:00 we opened the last set with "The sky is crying".  I sang it.  Not a great singer, me.  Not john Lee or anyone else. just a bassman.  The crowd was more interested in getting drunk than hearing Blues.  My good friend, when we were done with that tune rushed over to tell me not to sing anymore, my voice didn't sound good.  I said turn around.

The whole place was on their feet with glasses raised and screaming at the top of their lungs.  He slunk back to his seat and sat there shaking his head.  it was all delivery.  it was spare, slow and painful.  The band just ground it under.  And we finally had their attention.

You just don't start a set with a slow song.  Against the rules.  ya just don't do it.

John Lee is all delivery and I believe every word.  He broke the rules.  Ask Billy Gibbons!

Thanks again for the nod to the old masters.
