Topic: why bother??

There are times I wonder if I'm just wasting my time. I go to these gigs, hand out alot of JB cards, give them to family and friends. I'll bet it's in the 700's as far as the number of cards. It seems most people dont get it, I know peolpe know great music, but i get just a trickle of joy in return. I feel like the lone cowboy out here in Sac town, I'm the biggest Bonamassa fan in the state capitol, and i get frustrated at times. On a positive note, i got a friend at work who has been catching Joe frequently on xm radio, so i brought in Rockpalast for him to watch!! He better be jumping for joy today or I'll cut him off as a buddy!!!!! I need to rethink my approach, maybe I'm too aggressive......nah.....think I'll go right to there houses and make them listen, until they see things my way...lol

Shred,
That sounds pretty frustrating...hang in there.
What I've found is that you have to get people into the tent (aka a live show). I have given out cd's as gifts, loaned people cd's and dvd's and have mostly gotten polite responses of "yeah, he's pretty good". But when I've taken people to a live show, I bet I've had at least 90% of the people really excited "WOW, I knew Joe was good, but I HAD NO IDEA how good he really was!"

Re: why bother??

Shred..Dave, right?  All:

New guitarists are 10 a penny.  Most of them are over-hyped and over-rated in my opinion.  They listen to the wrong people and wind up in deep trouble and/or gigging 300 dates a year to pay for their alcohol or drug habit.

The resistance to all this static noise is almost impenetrable.  I am the same way.  I listen politely and move on.

I'm an old R&B true blues survivor.  Seen it all.  Not qualified to give advice, but here's an observation.  Times have changed.  My blues heros are darker and older or deader than I am.  Some of you would say that BigJeff is one of those obstructionists, always looking at the past, afraid of the future.  Not true.  I'm here.

Another rock guitarist?  Oh yawn.  Does it make the girls dance?  No?  pfui!  Will it make you weep?  All the musicians I know and my whole family are stunned that I like Joe Bonamassa.  He's not a shredder.  He has some soul.  He sings his heart out.  What he does on that guitar is the product of a lot of dedication and hard work.  He seems different to me than all the rest.  To some folks, he's not different, just more of the same.  They don't see it.

Let 'em go to a live show.  Then they'll feel what his band feels.  The perfect gold setting for that diamond.  Ms Tia went with me to the last show in Hard Rock Cafe, mostly cause she hasn't seen Carmine in years and was blown away by the power of that performance.

I take nothing away from any other guitar virtuoso.  They're incredibly talented.  They just don't move me.  My brother is one of the best guitarists I know.  He works very quietly with big names at guitar camps, just for fun.  He fell out of his chair when I told him I went to see a JB show and LOVED it.  I'm just not quick to gush.  He listened the other day to some stuff on the internet and said HMMMM.  That's good.

The point of all this bla bla bla is to keep on spreading the word, but don't expect too much.  You'll make yourself crazy.  I agree with Bill that a live show will get their attention.

I'm with you all the way.  Joe is cool.  The only thing that might save the world is going to be music.  Is it Christmas Eve already?  I salute the spirit within, one and all.

Much Love
Jeff

Re: why bother??

Shred...take a deep breath Lovey....The smartest thing I've learned is to first ask what music they like. That alone will eliminate a few..But, it also gives you a direction..Luckily Joe's music runs the gambit..If it all fails then just assume they have no taste and don't belong with us anyway! Frustration isn't healthy as you well know! Remember, when you do get a "hit", their joy and excitement will make up for the misses...  Sister Cate

Re: why bother??

Well said Sister Cate.  People go oh damn, here comes the funky Dr, gonna tell us we're all sissified white trash and not blues guys, when I walk into a club.  They hate me, but they know where I stand.  And when I do say, that was real good when you switched over to that minor pentatonic against the 5 chord...tension & release to the resolve on the one, these young guitar players get bug-eyed...then they go wow thanks jeff did you just compliment me?  But how did you know what...???  But it's not cool for the crowd to admit anything to one another while standing around with their arms folded.  Dang guitarists.

However the next time I walk in to a blues jam, somebody will ask me (irascible curmudgeon dat I'm is) to play, maybe.  That's a hit!

Plumb chatty today.  Somebody put one on me last night.

Namaste.  Sol Invictus is upon us.  Love, Jeff

Re: why bother??

Why bother? Because it's what we do...it's what Street Teamers do. Outside of Joe's music, many of us here don't share the same "Favorites" when it comes to music. Even we don't all share the favorite Joe CD or song. If they don't get it, they don't get it...and that's fine.

The seed is planted when you turn someone on to Joe's music. It may be 6 months later and they hear Joe's name again. It strikes a familiar chord somewhere in the back of their mind, and they listen...or they listen again...or go to a show they might not have otherwise gone to.

I wouldn't stress over it. Street Teaming is supposed to be fun...

I've shared this analogy before but it's been a while. It's really no different that when ACE Hardware runs a TV commercial for a hammer. The commerical isn't intended to make you go buy a hammer. It's to create "Top of Mind" familiarity...so when, 6 months later, you are building a shed and your hammer breaks, ACE Hardware comes to mind. You go buy a hammer, and maybe pick up a new saw while you're there.

You're helping to build that "Top of Mind" familiarity....6 months later the person you talk to today may pick up a CD or go to a show...

Re: why bother??

Dave i've Come Across this so many times , and it does get you down sometimes , but hey it's their loss , you just gotts to be thick skinned , i've spent hours doing cd's & dvd's trying to enlighten people to joe's mastery , but you know their just gonna , go oh yeah and then move on to and then there's the great feedback you get sometimes be it thru e-mail or just friends who come back with positve/genuine remarks and THERE you've done your little bit for the Street Team , But above all you do it for your self , because of the enjoyment you've got from it you want others to experience and feel it too . if you can turn 1 out of say 1 show , i would say that's progress , but if you dont ... hey don't let it spoil your own enjoyment for joe's music , but i've had that same feeling & it ain't good , and you do indeed ask yourself why ! ..... More & More People are hearing the band these days , and cd sales and chart positions are healthy , So if The Street Team Has Helped in any Little Way , we've all done what we set out to do ....... Promote Joe & His Band's Music

Re: why bother??

As the resident critic, I will get in on this...you do it because you like Joe.  And you think others might like Joe.

But when it literally becomes a job, like your describing, your too far into it for it to be any good to anyone.

Make it fun, and not such a responsibility.

Re: why bother??

You definitely don't want to overdo it. In my experience, people will just look at you, go "Ok...," and cut a wide swath to avoid you.

I tend to take a laid-back approach. I tell my friends, I have it cranked everywhere I go, if I get into a discussion with someone on music, I'll be sure to put his name in there. But that's just me. I've turned quite a few onto him doing it this way. But that's just my way.

Re: why bother??

I got to say I feel your pain my friends.I've burned many cd's for people. After I get a feel for what they like artist wise,I then find some tracks to give them a sample of. I am giving a cd to my sister who has never heard a lick of Joe's music. She is 48 with a husband and a 15 yr. old daughter. They are laid back churchgoing people who like Bruce Springsteen.Song list: UNBROKEN,ASKING AROUND FOR YOU,WAITING FOR ME,BLACK NIGHT,TRAVELLIN SOUTH,MY MISTAKE,WILD ABOUT YOU BABY,MAN OF MANY WORDS,TROUBLE WAITING,SO ITS LIKE THAT,LONG DISTANCE BLUES,YOU UPSET ME BABY,MOUNTAIN TIME,WHEN SHE DANCES, I DONT LIVE ANYWHERE,BLUES DELUXE,FAUX MANTINI,REVENGE OF THE 10 GALLON HAT and SO MANY ROADS. Some of Joe's "easy listening" tunes. Im looking at the list and thinking "hmm, how can there only be 2 songs from YOU & ME and 1 from SLOE GIN on here. A couple of reasons why;except for so many roads and blues deluxe, most all of the songs are about 4 mins. long or less.I would love to put sloe gin on it but its 8 mins. long and I dont know if their attention span is that long( I know that each are over7 mins. long but BLUES DELUXE and SO MANY ROADS HAD to make the list). Also I know the orig. version says "F'in" lonely, but I dont think my sis even wants "damn" or "aint even high" on there either because of her daughters prescious ears.Another song not making it is around the bend.I dont want my niece asking what "tasted the honey and dew"means.Maybe I'm just being paranoid ??? Anyhow I think its a good mix to start with.On the other hand,a guy i golf with, who i never knew until recently was into music, who's all time fave band is Led Zeppelin is getting a cd with:TEA FOR ONE,THE RIVER,HIGH WATER EVERYWHERE,SO MANY ROADS,BRIDGE TO BETTER DAYS,ANOTHER KIND OF LOVE,ONE OF THESE DAYS,BALL PEEN HAMMER,SLOE GIN,BURNING HELL, A NEW DAY YESTERDAY,HAD TO CRY TODAY and PAIN AND SORROW.Alot more harder edge than my sis' cd. He is acustomed to the longer 8-10 min. "Zeplike" jams and will drop the "F" bomb at any minute,so lyrical content was no issue with him.OK now if I havent put you to sleep yet,I guess what I'm saying is that my best course of action as far as recruiting people has been find out their style and turn them onto what you think suits them. NOT songs that might be your particular fave that day(because we all know how that changes). Everyones different.I always ask that they save it on their computer and pass the disc onto a friend or co worker or whomever may enjoy it.    CLASS,ATTENTION...ATTENTION CLASS....CLA...WAAAAKKKEEE UUUPPPPP.....thank you

Tell me about the car i saw parked outside your door ? Tell me what you left me waiting two or three hours for ? Tell me why when the phone rings, baby, your up and across the floor ? Please dont keep me wondering no more.....

Re: why bother??

Don't make me drive up the road and slap your whiney a** around dude. You make me look like a slacker when we hit a show togther. I get the same feeling at times, but its the blues and that's always beeb a tough sell. Just keep on doin' what you've been doin' and we'll keep havin' fun while we do it. Merry Christmas to you and Deb.

Re: why bother??

Hey Shred:

It is a lot like sales. The more you thro out there, the more will come back to ya. Maybe not today, tomorrow, or next year, but it does come back to you.
I think would just kick back with a cold one or two and think about the friends, besides J Dawg, that have brightened your life in some way. The folks you meet promoting and attending Joe Bonamassa Band shows are some of the greatest people on earth. We are all one kindred spirit. The more people that are aware of our band, the higher the chances of making a new fan, who can then tell others about what they have witnessed.

Very few things that are more rewarding that promoting kick a$$ musicians where ever you can.

Re: why bother??

Dont worry Shred, music is such a personal thing and when we find someone[like Joe] that we just go nuts over we want to turn others on to fell the rush we feel when we hear something thats way above the norm.Everybody's got their own type of music they like and has what ever level of "music importance'.For those like us, we place music very high on the list.I guess there are those who can take it or leave it. I lent a buddy of mine SILT thinking it would be the best place to start with him, after about 2 weeks I saw him again and asked him how he liked the cd,since he didnt bring it up,and he said he hadnt got around to playing it yet.I couldnt believe it.I cut him some slac k because he doesnt have a cd player in his car and lives 5 min from work.I know he listens to the radio at work, and has some of the same tastes in music as me. But go figure. So finally he says he listened to it and said it was pretty good. I doubt if he will go out and buy any of Joe stuff.I think if I can get him to a show it might light a little fire in him.I would say just keep doin what your doin and you will find enough interested that will make it all worthwhile.
