Topic: New blues guitarist to look out for: Ryan McGarvey

There's a new blues/rock guitarist hitting the scene whom I do believe would be of interest to many who are fans of Joe. His name is Ryan McGarvey, and this guy is an excellent guitarist, who happens to write some extremely good songs as well. If the name sounds familiar, I've mentioned him on this forum last summer, after he opened for Joe in Santa Fe, NM. I was very impressed then, but in the almost 10 months since he's just gotten increasingly better, and with his debut CD imminent, I predict very big things in his future. Great band as well. Remember the name, The Ryan McGarvey Band. You'll be hearing a lot more soon, I'm sure! Check out some video I took a few weeks ago at the Gov't Mule aftershow at the end of April and judge for yourself :

Debut CD tentatively scheduled for release August 4th.

"Look for this young lion in the future because he's looking for his own sound and what I've heard so far I like it"-Chris Duarte

"Ryan's playing has the passion and exuberance of youth, but it's further lifted by a deep dedication to his craft. His technique is awe-inspiring, but it's the dawning subtleties and emotional range that hints of the greatest possibilities"-Ian Moore

Ryan's from Albuquerque, New Mexico Jaci. Incredibly talented, he's got the goods!

Still only 20 years old, he's already won the 2007 New Mexico Music Award for 'Best Production: Blues' and was nominated for a 2007 New Mexico Music Award for 'Best Musical Production :Rock/Mainstream' and was named by the Albuquerque Weekly Alibi as 'Best Blues Band 2007'. Only the first of many to come, I'm sure...and this was for an album not even out yet....

Re: New blues guitarist to look out for: Ryan McGarvey

Good stuff Keith. Thanks. What a good looking kid too. It speaks volumes that Chris Duarte and Ian (muddy Jesus) Moore have such high praise for this guy.  Man there's some good stuff coming out these days. So in the past 2 weeks I've found out about Ryan and Back Door Slam. 2 of the best young talents I've heard in a long time.    Thanks again.

Take care everyone. And if I don't meet you no more in this world
Then ill, I'll meet you in the next one and don't be late, don't be late

Re: New blues guitarist to look out for: Ryan McGarvey

I've received permission from Ryan to post this link to a full length Mp3 download from the album, which I'm sharing with you:

"Mystic Dream"

Now keep in mind that this was recorded when he was still 19 years old, and just having turned 21 last week, he's gotten even so much better it's astounding.

Thanks Keith. I trust your taste. And, it isn't easy to come up with somebody Pittsburg Jeff doesn't already know!   Cathy

WOW!  Just gave Mystic Dream a loud listen. Can you say Pain and Sorrow?  OUTSTANDING guitar. Clean, precise, a few parts sound just like JB. This song was definatly influenced by P&S.     I LOVE IT! I give it 5 stars.

Seeing as Joe is one of Ryan's big influences, it's not surprising there's a P&S sound to this. We went to his 21st birthday party/Halloween bash on the 31st, and he was mesmerizing. Even broke out the bow during his version of Zep/Joe's "Just Got Paid/Dazed And Confused". His humbleness reminds me of Joe's regarding his talent, which goes a long way in my book.

I predict that Joe is going to be a major influence on many young players, just as Beck, Clapton, Rory was on Joe. Which is promising for the "next generation" of blues/rock guitarists. With players such as Ryan coming up, I'd say the blues will be a living genre for years to come, thanks in no small part to Joe's efforts.

I had never heard of this Ryan kid until this thread.  I went to his My Space page and listened to "Blue Eyed Angel Blues" which definately had a "Joe" sound to it (guitar-wise, not voice)!  It's awesome that Joe is influencing kids (21 qualifies as a kid to us) to carry on with blue/blues rock with their own twist but, hey baby, it's Joe all the way for me and my hubby!

Re: New blues guitarist to look out for: Ryan McGarvey

Finally got to listen to the CD (Thanks as usual to Pittsburg Jeff!)..I LOVE this kid! You can hear Joe's influence for sure! Keith is right! The Joe effect is in place. I tried to figure out what he was playing..He plays Fenders and Gibson's..lots of tones..It's a shame Joe doesn't let us find bands for his label because I'd be screaming to sign this one!!!   Cathy
