Re: x-mas dinner

Cool.  I grew up in a mixed neighborhood from across the tracks & married an Irish Catholic girl, so we do a combo thing.  Whoever wants to go to mass goes and then to nana's for traditional noche buena stuff where we eat grilled cheese, oyster stew & tomato soup.  (Dang Baltomoreans) Then we all open one gift apiece and somebody has to medicate me so I don't spitup from phoniness.

Can i eat wit you?

Then Christmas morning we gather over here and have real food for breakfast with strawberries and sweets and we open everything else.  That's fun.  Pop pop is not with us any longer and I feel for Nana, so I treat her as good as I can.  Funny thing is life.  I fought with her so long, I got used to it.  Now I can't bring myself to fight with her,

So she makes Ms.Tia (her only daughter) crazy, instead.   HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

We manage to make it work for a long time.  Merry Christmas to all!

Re: x-mas dinner

Damn Joe Beacon, thats the way to do it. I love the idea of eating all day/night then letting the kids do the presents thru out the night. Putting them together on Christmas day eatin leftovers. Now thats a great idea. I'm gonna float that one around the familys for nest year.
Here at the Sandy household where it's just the wifey and myself, we do the romantic x mas eve. Open 1 each with a bottle of champagne or wine or 2, 3. X mas morning it's always off to my sisters house where all the kids are.  Usually get there around noon, eat the more traditional holiday foods. Ham, turkey...  and of course lots of sweets and good coffee to cure the munchies. For some reason I always end up with the munchies when I visit my sis. You can draw your own conclusions... Happy Holidays to all.

Take care everyone. And if I don't meet you no more in this world
Then ill, I'll meet you in the next one and don't be late, don't be late

Re: x-mas dinner

Hey everyone,
Joe, we've been doing the big Italian feast on Christmas Eve since I was a kid, its been at my house for the last 15 years, great tradition.  I love hearing about everyones traditions, I think its a wonderful thing to pass on to the younger generation, whatever it may be...good food seems to be the bonus to all traditions...

I should have mentioned this over at the Thanksgiving tradition post, but it doesn't have to do with food...In my old neighborhood with tons of kids, my 4 brothers started a tradition on Thanksgiving morning...they play flag football on the field of one of our old schools.  They've been doing it now for over 30 years and have incorporated everyones offspring.  Its a standing thing, whoever is in town, shows up and plays football. smile

P.S.-Joe, I'm still curious if your grandmother's chesse cake is with ricotta versus cream cheese? And do you make calamari, lots of people overcook it, then its tough.  I read your post about resolutions lol...I'm still practicing how to keep it in, like Ringo says...it don't come easy!  You have a big heart Joe, have a very Merry Christmas!

OK, back to the kitchen & the football game!

Shred,

Next time you need to give a gift, use a JB card as a gift tag! But that means you might have to help wrap all those presents next year! lol

Good to have you back here and posting (I know you were lurking.....come on and admit it......:)....)

Re: x-mas dinner

We travel over the river and thru the woods to Mom's/Grandma's house.  Christmas Eve usually consists of potato soup, chili, oyster soup....homemade treats and goodies on the side...
Christmas is usually turkey or chicken with mashed potatoes, gravy, the best cornbread casserole this side of the Mississippi , green bean casserole, dressing, cranberry fruit salad, deviled eggs, rolls, and the best homemade lemon meringue pie on both sides of the Mississippi.  Yes, my Mom is one fantastic old-fashioned cook.  I can taste it now.

Shred,
Ironic you mentioned JB cards. I heard some curse words coming from the other room today. My wife had pulled something out of our coat closet and dumped a half box of  JB cards (about 500) all over the floor of our foyer. JB cards were everywhere...guess I need to work on handing out the rest of these in 2008.

Re: x-mas dinner

About 15 or 16 years ago, my wife and I started serving our daughters dinner in front of the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve. My wife and I always let them pick out what they wanted for dinner. After dinner, we never had problems getting them into bed and afterwards we would have our dinner.
As they got to high school age, we began having dinner together, still at a table in front of our Christmas tree. Usually a nice steak dinner.
Christmas day will be turkey dinner (turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, cranberries, sweet potatoes, 3 or 4 veggies, etc.) with the full families. We usually eat mid afternoon and then break all the food out again later in the evening.

Roy---very funny. hmm
Shred---Great idea!!! I'll try handing out some JB cards this year.
I'm hosting Christmas this year. Usually everyone brings a dish of their choice, and I usually do the dessert...apple pie...mmm! Well, it is "all about apples!"
Have a great holiday everyone!! smile
