When's Joe returning to The Netherlands? I'd like to take my 18-year old nephew, who is really     into blues rock and playing guitar.

Re: Tour date

Andre

How do you guys in Europe get so good at languages ??
Flemmish seems so impenetrable to us and yet you guys seem to speak perfect English as well !!

I feel so stupid when I go to France, Belgium, Germany and Holland that my language skills (as are most UK people's) are so poor.

I try wherever I go to speak at least some of the local language but usually end up with the other person speaking English.....presumably because my attempt is so pathetic.

Please bear with us !!

Best wishes.
Ges.

ps.
My son is in the next room listening to a selection of music on iTunes. Ramstein at the moment - singing in German. Can't understand a word (apart from the English bits - We're all living in America) Pretty heavy stuff.......but sounds OK actually.

Re: Tour date

Thanks for the compliments Ges!

I know that Dutch is very hard to learn for foreigners, so don't be ashamed my friend.
German is easy for me because i live only a few miles from the German border and we watched a lot of German television when I was a child.
We got TV in 1962 when I was 9 years old and there were only 2 channels: 1 Dutch and 1 German, so I heard Bonanza etc.in German because they synchronized everything foreign and still do.

At secondary school English, German and French is obliged, we learned it there too.
last note: we live close to those countries and come there quite often.

Ps.
Rammstein is very popular in Europe, very hard and good liveshows but not my thing.
Mutter (mother) is their greatest hit.

That's why Ges.
( But writing is more difficult than talking).

Re: Tour date

I'm going to take this opportunity to second Ges's accolades for your talents Andre....I've said it before, your multilingistical skills are very impressive. It's comforting to know you're here, especially when a new member signs in and English is not their primary language...You're the MAN!  Thanks for all the International good will....You are a gem!          Cathy

Re: Tour date

Roy, You crack me up!! I warned you that your Joe withdrawl was going to be brutal! But sex change surgery, grilling outside in a blizzard, Bloody Mary induced coma's, even the splintering of your personality will not change reality....Don't worry, soon our friends across the pond will bring news! And, I've already had enough lovers who were skunks! I remain your loyal crew member, resident R.N. and fellow Bonamaniac....Lt. Com. G. (Didn't I get a promotion?)         Again, Thanks Andre for your skills!

Re: Tour date

Andre,
Good to hear from you in any language.  I'm having a good time with this forum.

All:
Funny story time...when my kids were little I would allow them to watch cartoons in the afternoon when I came home.  They would some days run screaming out of their bedroom, "Daddy, DADDY, skunk LePew, SKUNK LePEWWW!" and of course the house would grind to a halt while we consumed that breath of completely adult nonsense made up to be kid stuff.

Almost as good as playing the blues.  BluesMan Roy, I think you might need some help.  lol  Funny Cathy!  It's 78 & sunny here.  Feeling dat love.

Motorcycle riding time.

Hey Jeff, I love the link!!! Honestly, The word HOPE is what I used when I first heard Joe. I wish you would make the link a new thread..or under the Orlando review, anyway, it's well written! It took me a while to realize how much resistence Joe gets from the Blues community!!!! I see him as the Commanding officer in the "war" for the future of the genre! I belong to 2 Blues Societies and I look around at events...Old members honoring old players..I haven't anything against honoring the past..but..I care more about legacy..I want to know my great great grandchildren will have contemporary blues. Even the Blues Foundation doesn't really consider legacy..well now I'm ranting, sorry. Really glad you're here! You are a tall drink of water!!!      Oh, please ride with a buddy..people in cars, esp. in Fla., don't always see a lone bike!     Cathy

Thanks Cathy,  the review is there under the Orlando thread started by upsetme.

I was (no longer) the secretary for the Daytona Blues Society & might have been guilty (at one time) of some of the things you mentioned, because I got tired of Southern or Classic Rock masquerading as BLUES.  It has its place & it's good there.  AND the personalities (politics) get me tired.  Hang in there.

Joe is a Young Lion.  He's now also a member of the Blues Foundation Board.  That is as it should be.

I have often said if you want to be really good at Blues Music, you must study the Old Masters, but then you can put your stamp on it.  That's what Guy, Hendrix, Page, Clapton, Beck, Gibbons etc. did.  Then the blues will move up a notch, which I'm ALL FOR!

As a musician/bassman I listen very carefully to a lot of pretenders at the "small time" level and I hear noise.  Obviously I don't feel that way about JB.  I hear mastery, not noise.  That being said, I have one more observation...you can't put a diamond in a plastic setting.  Kudos to the band...

'nuff said.  Ride safe y'all!  I do.  Thanks again.

Much Love, Jeff

Re: Tour date

There's some funny stuff here, for sure!

Returning to languages, it is almost always English speakers who are surprised or impressed by the language skills of many Europeans. Brits and Americans have historically been loath to learn other languages because they never had to. English speakers have always expected others to respond in English, a linguistic arrogance that has existed for centuries - but which has certainly been starting to change in recent decades.

Many Europeans, on the other hand, have had good and pressing reasons for learning other languages. It also helps if you can talk with the people in adjoining countries in their own lingo.

There are, of course, also educational and cultural reasons why many (by no means all!) Europeans are multi-lingual. The Dutch and Belgians are the champion linguists in my experience. Many people in both countries are fluent (if not 'native') in two languages with an excellent understanding of one or two more. Not surprisingly, English, French, German, Italian and Spanish speakers are less likely to be as multi-lingual as Dutch or Flemish speakers.

Dutch is a bugger to learn to speak and a nightmare to write - unless you also understand German grammar. I had the good fortune to grow up bilingual in English and German, which made Dutch just about the easiest language for me to learn! After almost 19 years here I now consider myself fully trilingual! And that's really no big deal in Amsterdam!

The first time Andre called me he spoke English. I replied in Dutch and that's how we've spoken ever since. smile
