Topic: Tommy Castro vs. North Mississippi All Stars for my birthday?

Ok everyone, I need help.

On my birthday weekend, there are two super sweet shows playing at my favorite local venue (The State Theatre in DC).

Friday night is the North Mississippi All Stars.

Saturday Night is Tommy Castro and his All Star Blues Revue.

I have seen both...I love both, and I think my friends would like both as well.

I need help. I want to bring all of my friends to one...and then i'll probably see the other on my own. What is everyones thought? What would be more fun for a group of mid twenty somethings.

Ah good question.I wonder what the Allstars are playing live these days. There earlier cds were more electric reved up hill country blues.More recent seemed a little more tuned down, but I dont know about their live show.I have not seen either live, but Castro seems to be someone who likes a little more funky, rythum ,less strait blues , music you could dance to.So I like both but would say go Castro.

I'd go with the Allstars myself.

Re: Tommy Castro vs. North Mississippi All Stars for my birthday?

I'd go with the All Stars as well.  My favorite band for a while now, hence my screen name.  Just caught them in Memphis a couple weeks ago at their "Family Reunion" shows.  It was a great time, their dad, Jim Dickinson played a set and the All Stars backed him up.  Great time.

Yeah, they still play the Hill Country stuff, but they also have a new album out next month called Hernando with what I guess is going to be the most original/heavy material they've written to date.

You're in your 20's and you're choosing 1 night! I say do both!!! You have a year to recover! NMA will keep you hopping and because I'm a Bluescruiser, I think the review show is too much fun to miss....So go for it, young one! Make sure you let us know how it all goes down........and have a Happy B-day!!!    Cathy

Haha. Don't worry, I'm going to both.  But I want to pick one as the official birthday gathering, thus convincing those who wouldn't normally come.  Luckily, I still have until the end of January...but you can never plan too far in advance.

If you want to hear some 30 second snippets from their upcoming CD, go to http://www.allmusicguide.com and put North Mississippi All Stars in the search. Then click on Discography. Pretty cool stuff. We'll be seeing them on New Year's Eve. Hopefully they'll be trying out more of their new stuff then!

Nobody gets the ladies fired up and shakin' their booties like Tommy does. You do the math and have fun whichever way you decide to celebrate.

PS, Hey Chris it's your birthday, splurge and go to both.

Guess I'd better do some homework. I admit, I have not listened to Tommy Castro...

Kellie, get yer hands on the newest CD Painkiller, or try the Essential Tommy Castro, but your best bet is to check him out live.

Haha.  Good point.  As I am now back on the market, I need to take these things into account.

Also, Kellie, the Essential is his best compilation of album stuff...my favorite full album is Soul Shaker...but if you want to hear him at his best, get Live at the Fillmore CD or DVD.  Great stuff.

Re: Tommy Castro vs. North Mississippi All Stars for my birthday?

Kellie:  Listen to Tommy's song, "Nasty Habits" and I'd be shocked if you're not compelled to get up and shake what your mama gave ya!  I first heard this song at a blues jam a couple years ago and have adopted it as my own and it's always a crowd pleaser but I don't do it anywhere near justice to the original version.

Chris, we'll probably see ya there!
