Topic: Joe Rocks Tampa

What an incredible evening.  First, let me say what an amazing venue this was for Joe to play.  The sound was just amazing.  Ken and I took our seats in the second row directly in front of where Joe would be playing.  The rest is history.

Crosby Loggins took the stage by himself and this was the first time I heard him play.  He was very good.

Then, it was time for Joe.  I have to say last night's show was the best sound I've ever heard.  Joe's manager, Roy, told me that since I last saw Joe play, he had a new sound guy.  Between that and the venue we were all just blown away.

Ken and I met two new friends last night (Frank and D) who had never seen Joe before.  They couldn't believe what they were hearing.  We told them about the Orlando show and they are gonna try to meet us at the Hard Rock for Joe's show tomorrow night.

After the show, we were able to talk  to Joe and take some new pictures with him. He had not eaten dinner yet, but being the nice guy that he is, hung around until everyone had a chance to talk to him.  My admiration for this guy grows more and more each time I see him.

This is the setlist from last night's show:

Bridge to Better Days
Walk in My Shadow
So Many Roads
Mountain Time  wink
Another Kind of Love
Sloe Gin
High Water Everywhere
If Heartaches Were Nickels
Woke Up Dreaming
Django
Just Got Paid
encore
Asking Around For You
One Of These Days
Ball Peen Hammer

Thanks Joe, YOU Rock!!!  See you in Orlando.

Re: Joe Rocks Tampa

Hey Susan, sounds like a another stellar performance by Joe and company.  Jay is Joe's tour manager and sound guy and does a great job.  They are using a new board with all the bells and whistles.

How many were at the venue, was it a sell out?   Glad you were able to see him in your area, always makes it even more special...

Re: Joe Rocks Tampa

Thanks Susan..I was afraid the band had disappeared into Cuba or something....It's nice to know you'll be at the LAST show of this run...Have an extra great time for all your Bonabuddys!                          Cathy

I think there were about 500 people at the show.  It seems that people are just hearing about Joe down here.  A couple that I talked to last night are huge Blues fans and heard about him on a  Blues radio station and went out and bought tickets to the show.  I want Joe to make it bigger down here, but I gotta say, I'm loving the smaller audiences while they last.

Anyway, I just want to say Kudos to Jay.  What a great job you're doing.

And one more thing, all the songs sounded great last night, but "Sloe Gin" was simply off the charts.

Susan,

Thanks for sharing the show experience with us. I think someone said Joe has a new sound board, although I'm not possitive of that. It's just amazing that there's so many people who don't know about Joe or are just learning of him. I guess that's how it all grows. One person tells 5 more, then those five tell five and so on, and so on........

Roy

Yeah Roy, I mentioned above about the new sound board.  Jay was showing it to me in Athens, very nice piece of equipment...

Re: Joe Rocks Tampa

Susan,
Thanks for the update. It's been a month since I've seen a JB show and I'm getting early signs of withdrawal.
It's nice to be able to live vicariously through the "Show Reviews". I didn't get a chance to hear One of These Days, since Joe added it after the shows here in Chicagoland...guess I need to pick an out of town show sometime soon.

BILL BONAMETAL!!!!!

Susan thanks for your report. Sure was a gteat night for you all!

Bill congratulations with the 1000!! Go for the next, as I go for the 300 first.
Thanks for being such a nice Joe fan and forummembers! Sad your memory is fading a bit, Rockpalast, you remember since yesterday!!
Have a SLoe Gin on the 1000, you deserve it my Bonamssa friend.

Re: Joe Rocks Tampa

Susan (HI Ken too), thanks for the setlist and review.  Sorry again I didn't get there or Orlando tomorrow, but my Street Team efforts were cut short due to family health issues that have been perpetual for a 2 month period now.  500 people sounds like a "treat" sized audience-the kind the band is ok with and may dole out a special extra effort on.  Thanks also for the special sound quality report that I had specifically asked you for .  Much Appreciated!!! David, there's no such thing as a board with all the bells & whistles. They either have everything a sound reinforcement engineer (or recording engineer) needs or they do not have everything a sound reinforcement engineer (or recording engineer) needs!!! smile
Cathy there's still 3 southwest concerts before export...get Mom (and daughter) out of the house and into the sun?! Bill, I am also grumbly about not hearing "One of These Days" or "Ball Peen Hammer"...what you think? England???

Re: Joe Rocks Tampa

Thanks for the review, Susan.  Ferguson Hall @ The Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center is definitely one of the acoustically best venues in the state. I'm glad to hear that the sound was incredible!

Unfortunately I wasn't able to attend again this go-'round as I suffered a pretty bad back injury back in August, leading to sciatic nerve issues, etc., etc., etc. Driving, sitting, all that "normal" stuff causes a level of uncomfortableness (is that even a word?!?  ;-) ) that makes it very difficult to enjoy certain activities.... NORMAL, everyday activities!

It's tough to spread the word down here, especially in the TB area, since everything is Cox/Clear Channel/same, lame formats that resist change. I was hoping for a bigger crowd but I'm sure those in attendance were thoroughly drained by show's end!

By the way, did you notice any tapers? I had contacted the venue way back when tix went on sale and although they have a strict no taping policy at the TBPAC, I was told that they were allowing taping of the show because of Joe's policy. I hope someone was able to capture it.

Hopefully I'll be all healed up by the next time Joe rolls into the Sunshine State.

Re: Joe Rocks Tampa

Hey Dave, there's an on-line radio station there (I can't find my literature) that I talked to about Joe during the Tampa Bay Blues Fest....They said they'd play Joe for his 30th B-day! About your back..if they want to operate, go for it..I've had 2 discectomies and a fusion. I was in more misery before the surgeries than post-op! Chronic pain just sucks the life out of you. E-mail me if I can answer any questions....Good luck...  Cathy

MAN, Sorry for the second time again this year Dave! You missed the Valentine's Day Show even after you had tickets this year, now you got even worse situation. sad And I'll tell you, I KNOW how long you've been waiting since far prior to 2/14/2007!!! I was supposed to go and this post link will depress us both: http://www.jbonamassa.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=2904  sad sad It wasn't misfortune for me that kept me away, it's others in my family.  But "Better days are coming"...Hope you can have a turnabout like Cathy did.

P.S.-Maybe there'll be a vicarious thrill around the bend if a cut or 2 from Tampa PAC ends up on the next release smile

Rocket,
I see Joe's playing on a Saturday night in Vegas (I think it's Feb. 2nd). Robin Trower plays the same venue the night before. I'm practicing my sales pitch for the wife!
Joe's playing in Santa Ana that Friday. I haven't checked Robin's tour schedule, but I can certainly dream about a guest appearance on Saturday...can't I?
Maybe "Day of the Eagle" for an encore? or Robin playing along on One of These Days?

I think I need to make the same sales pitch to the hubby. "Oh, honeeee, how'd you like to go back to Vegas? In February?" That'll work. big_smile

Hey Nancy,
I was thinking the same thing.  I haven't been back to Vegas in a while.  Hmmmmm.....   That just might work.

My friend took me to the Tampa show without me knowing who Joe is. We sat in the front row (we must have been right in front of Susan) and what an incredible treat!  I have a new favorite artist. The sound was simply amazing. To watch someone perform that can sing and play like that is very satisfying.  It amazes me that I did not hear of him before.
I listen to the radio station that I think people are referring to. It is WMNF 88.5, they have a regular blues show at two every weekday afternoon. They also have an unparralleled public affairs segment each day from ten till two. It is a community supported station that doesn't toe the corporate media line.

Its hard to describe how happy I am to find someone that plays the music I like, like that.
