I believe the Dead-mania was NOT a fad or trend, but an actual state of mind and way of life; you can still see that because many of the 'had-boiled hippies and Heads of the 60s are still there diggin' everything Dead! smile. I'm on the official Grateful Dead forum and I can tell you there's no better place to pick up what was going on in the 60s than that forum.

You're 10 years younger than I am Rob, so I guess I'd fit in with the older brothers you refer to!

Hit me with a link to the forum please and I'll join you there. big_smile

I was never a Dead Head, but I did "get" them. My 24y/o nephew and his friends are very into the Dead. They have gone to see RatDog and loved it. But George, if you want to talk about Little Feat..well I was definately a Feathead!!!!!!       Cathy

I was a Deadhead 'by correspondence' from Australia, but I loved Jerry and the boys!! smile

Re: I wish I was a headlight....

it's true once a deadhead always a deadhead . for years that was my life . i followed them from 1978 untill jerry died and recorded hundreds of there shows . once jerry died things weren't the same . i was very big on jerrys guitar playing and i always thought the jerry garcia band was much better then the dead you got jerry and only jerry all night and that to me was killer . as for not getting the dead some people got it some people didn't but look at it this way every show was different they never played the same songs each show and when they hit the road for a tour they had over 200 songs ready for playing .so to me that alone was worth the trip to catch different shows and thats why alot of people followed them around you never knew what you where going to get from night to night and the parking lot parties and hotel parties where always killer .if you notice alot of bands follow what the dead did and they change up the setlist from night to night that way you draw more people to your shows because they don't want to miss any of the songs .  i do go and see phil lesh and friends alot since i am a bass player and phil is a great bass player i love seeing him as for bob i have seen him a bunch but ratdog doesn't do much for me . so everyone eat some mushroom caps put on live dead and sit back and relax and let the music take to place you have never been .............joe

Do any of you happen to know what's happened to the Dead forum? It seems to have, er, died 2-3 weeks ago. sad

Re: I wish I was a headlight....

The Grateful Dead is one of my three all-time favorite bands (the other two being Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd)... but even though I call myself a Deadhead, I never followed them around, and never saw Ratdog or Phil Lesh and Friends or 'The Dead' or any other incarnations, just went to a handful of shows back in the 80s and 90s... although two of those shows were 1,000-mile round trips to Vermont two summers in a row (justified by the fact that my brother lives 10 minutes from Highgate where they played)... I'm really glad I did that too, because Jerry died just two months after my last Vermont show.  sad

Also, the first year I went to Vermont, the night before The Grateful Dead played, Santana happened to be playing nearby (at natural outdoor amphitheater on Smugglers Notch near Stowe, a real nice venue that doesn't exist anymore), and ticket sales must have been low, because the day of the show, anyone who had a Grateful Dead ticket could buy a Santana ticket at half price... so I said what the heck, and I'm glad I did too... I enjoyed them way more than I thought I would, in fact it was virtually impossible to sit still in my seat, lol... and as a big added bonus, the opener was Buddy Guy... my first and only time seeing him, but man what a treat!  smile

And by the way, I'm a Little Feat fan too... Waiting For Columbus ranks way up there on my list of all-time favorite albums.  I've seen them a handful of times between the 80s and now... the most recent time being this past spring at Ram's Head in Annapolis MD... a nice, intimate, great-sounding show indeed!  smile

Sorry to bump this up again, but does no one know what's happened to the Dead forum? Has it moved? Is it, er, dead? Anyone?

Re: I wish I was a headlight....

Don't know about their website, but the band reunited last Mon. Feb. 4 and played the Warfield Theater in San Francisco in support of Barack Obama. The Dead have never really taken this strong a political stance for a candidate in the past, but each member was quoted on the news as being in support. Ironically as they were playing, Bill Clinton was a mile down the street campaigning for his wife. If Bill knew the Dead were just down the street he might have crashed the party, Obama, or not.
