Topic: Claptons Crossroad

They have released the Clapton Crossroad DVD this week, seeing it reminded me of what I said when I attended the show live. This is a great concert but the only thing that would have made it better would have been a set by Joe Bonamassa. His virtuoso playing would have blown the crowd away.

Agree, great show, could use some fresh blood

there was also some great talent on the bonus clip

who is Orianthi....my my my

Re: Claptons Crossroad

Joe was invited to play at Crossroads, but had already been booked for the North Sea's Jazz Festival.  To big of a deal to back out of that event.

Music is good for the Soul...

Orianthi is Australian, I believe. She played on the Village Stage pre-show along with Tab Benoit, Todd Wolfe and others. IMHO she was more style than substance. The guy that did impress me on the Village Stage was the last guy in the bonus clip, Jedd Hughes, another Australian.

Re: Claptons Crossroad

Joe was doing the North Sea Jazz Fest.... All the videos we've received came from that show. If you think about it...all this great music recorded for history happening at the same time..WOW!                                                             Cathy

Wow! That's the first time I've heard that. Kudos to Joe for honoring his commitment.
I'm sure he would have opened some eyes at Crossroads.

I was floored by Jeff Beck,  Especially his bassist 21 year old Tal Wilkenfeld.  She is truely unbelievable.

That day Beck and his band were truly fantastic. His drummer Vinnie Colaiuta is one of the best I've ever seen and there was such a buzz in the crowd about who exactly his bass player was.
The DVD does a pretty good job at capturing the essence of his set, but there was so much great stuff that didn't make it on the DVD. Search YouTube for the rest of his set.

Re: Claptons Crossroad

I saw the Crossroads show on public tele last eve - anyone that says John Mayer can't play the blues when he wants to is "nuts". Jeff Beck brought back fond memories of the '70's. And Steve Winwood - there is one talented guy...

Re: Claptons Crossroad

All in all I think it was a pretty good show.  I don't think it was quite as good as the other Crossroads show I've seen on DVD though.

With some of those guys, it is a sobering reminder of how age can wear even the greatest down in time.  It was an honor to see some of these guys play, but you can certainly tell that time has had an affect on them.  Nonetheless, I enjoyed seeing the legends and I am glad they were there.

The highlights of what I saw of it were probably Derek Trucks, Sonny Landreth, Vince Gill, Albert Lee, and I particularly enjoyed Johnny Winter.  Everybody else was really pretty good too, but those are the ones that really jumped out at me.

Hopefully Joe will be at the next one.

BTW...PBS aired the show last night.

I've seen John Mayer play better, but he had no b'ness bein' there.

He is not the heir apparant to the blues.  He couldn't shine the JB's shoes.....

Re: Claptons Crossroad

John Mayer does belong, as does Joe. As I've said many times, Joe is so good that to tear down another guitar player is ridiculous. Joe doesn't need that because he is that good. Only guitar players who aren't that good need people tearing down other guitarists to make them look good.

Re: Claptons Crossroad

Actually John Mayer can play some wicked guitar, and some great Blues
But his songs are just geared otherwise

And I gotta find more Orianthi, thought she had fantastic tone
Almost thought it was odd she was playin a PRS, not sure why
then again, thought there was a hint of Carlos influence

just find her very interesting

Re: Claptons Crossroad

She is an absolutely amazing talent!!  Does anyone know how she got connected to Jeff?  Also, does anyone think she facially resembles the original Blind Faith cover?

Yes. Excellent slide player. I've heard a couple songs on XM Bluesville.

Re: Claptons Crossroad

It is funny how one of the best guitar players there was the least known and played first. Sonny Landreth is one bad  Mofo.  I was there that day and was shocked how many people were not there when the event started and most of the people around me had no clue who Sonny was. How can you be late to a once in a lifetime event like that.  Sonny like Joe still plays small places, do yourself a favor and catch a full show, you will be blown away.  Hopefully the DVD will bring Sonny some much deserved new fans.  BTW Jeff Beck proved he is the baddest of the early british blues movement. He and his bass player brought the house down.
