Rolling thunder rattles the redwoods
Tim Jordan For the Times-Standard
The sound of thunder roared over the hills of southern Humboldt and northern Mendocino this past weekend and it wasn't from a storm. Thousands of motorcyclists rolled into Piercy for the 29th annual Redwood Run bike show and music festival. Where else on the Northcoast can you find bikes, bands, burgers, beers, babes and Bonamassa?
The three-day event featured 10 musical acts, including headliners Foreigner, Dave Mason and Vince Neil of Motley Crue. But the highlight of the weekend was blues-rock virtuoso Joe Bonamassa. His two hour performance stole the show and was worth the price of admission all by itself.
Bonamassa took the stage Saturday night and his show grabbed the leather-clad crowd and never let go. His inspired performance channeled the spirits of all the rock and blues guitar gods such as Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Beck, Albert Collins, BB King and every Delta bluesman that ever played slide.
Bonamassa's body writhed, gyrated and bent over backwards as he coaxed miraculous sounds from his guitars. Legendary rock guitarist Ted Nugent has said that “Bonamassa makes up new sounds and notes that have never been heard before.” High praise from yet another rock god.
Bonamassa began playing at the age of four. He toured with BB King at age 11 and now, 18 years later, he celebrated his 29th year on the planet at the 29th annual Redwood Run.
