Topic: World Blues

I saw that Joe mentioned recording a "World Blues" record in 2008. At the risk of demonstrating my ignorance, I've got to ask...what exactly is "World Blues?" I tried looking up the phrase on the internet and found nothing. Is it a collection of different regional blues, such as Delta Blues, Chicago Blues, Texas Blues, etc? Those are all Amercian based though...one could add British Blues, but that's still not worldly, it's just Great Britian and USA. Help me out?

Re: World Blues

Hi Stu,
Joe mentioned this in an interview  for "Rock N Roll Universe" posted by Keith a while back.

He mentioned he would like to go around the world and do a blues album in different locations with indiginous players and his own players. He mentions India,  Africa, Cuba, Europe, Australia...

You'll find it in this interview where he's asked "Where would you like to take yourself musically?...).

Ok thanks. Well then maybe a true Indigenous player might be included! Joe's jammed with Mato before big_smile

Re: World Blues

I wonder exactly when this is going to happen.  It looks like he's taking a tour break for a couple of months after the orlando show before he starts back up again in the UK.  Maybe that's when this will happen.  It sounds like a pretty cool concept.

Re: World Blues

You know, now that I think about it, the other idea would be cool too. A couple Texas Blues song with a Strat and lots of pinch harmonics like Billy Gibbons uses (I LOVE that squeal), a couple Chicago Blues numbers like in the Buddy Guy and Freddy King style, a couple Delta Blues numbers, etc....that could be a lot of fun! But I know Joe is trying to avoid the Blues Deluxe Volume II thing, which I guess this is beginning to sound like...

But maybe it would be different, as each song would be adopting (in part) the other artist's sound and/or style. It would/could be a Blues version of Gov't Mule's Deep End on which Warren Haynes adopts the style and sound of the different guitarists/bands that each of the guest-bassist on the album had played with. For example, with Jack Bruce on Fool's Moon there's a definite early Eric Clapton/Cream vibe going on, a stong Who influence and sound on the track with John Entwistle, etc...but yet it's all 100% Mule. Joe could make this album 100% Joe but still craft songs in each sub-genre, well I am rambling a bit now.

Re: World Blues

I have a CD I picked up at Whole Foods called Blues Around the World put out by Putumayo. They do all different kinds of compilation thematic CDs. It's got blues from artists from Ireland, Brazil, Spain, Africa and Taiwan and a couple of cuts from American artists. I love it. smile

I've not been able to find anything under the moniker "world blues" either. I don't think it's a defined category. You really have to dig around to find artists from other countries doing blues.

I'm just saying.

Re: World Blues

There another interview on the front page of this website with Premier Guitar Magazine that talks a little more about this topic.

this is a little blurb from the interiew:

Next year we’re going to start working on the World Blues Album. We’re going to six continents to record with indigenous musicians playing the blues. I want to show people how the blues are interpreted by others all over the world. It’s a pretty ambitious project, something no one has ever attempted before so we’re going to try to be the Magellan’s and sail around the Horn without killing ourselves!

Joe Bonamassa's new album, Sloe Gin, is in stores now. He is currently touring the Midwest and will hit the East coast by mid-November. He is scheduled to tour India and Europe starting in Februrary.

Re: World Blues

I have no idea what world blues is, but I am very interested to see how Joe defines it. Should be fun.

Re: World Blues

The world appears blue from space.  The sky scatters blue so we see it that way.  The deep blue seas divide the world into sections separated by blues. The blues are you. The blues are me. The blues are You & Me, The blues are wherever you may be, The blues are everywhere everyone can see...Everyone knows some blues.
Don't let the push for "going green" confuse, World Blues are blues we can all use.

This sums up the whole concept right here, so is there a need to speculate any more into it? Joe mentioned in SF that a trip to Cuba was in the plans for the break in Dec./Jan. Sounds like the first stop in the World Music project or perhaps just some well deserved R&R and some scouting around. I'm happy to just sit back and see what the end product will be as I've never been disappointed yet. Enjoy the mojitos.

Rocket that was awesome. J-dawg no there isn't a need but some of us can't help it. we'll enjoy whatever end product like we always do . I speculate more or less because it helps me deal with the bonaddiction afflicition thats all. its all good smile
one other thing - i hope its extremely diverse

Easy does it kiddo, just take two live shows and call the Bonadoctor in the morning. If that's not quite enough throw in some live DVD to get you through the night.

Re: World Blues

I picked up a CD at the local libary recently and it to was a "history of the blues" CD. It contained the usual cast of characters John Lee, Muddy, Rbt Johnson, etc. The last song on the CD was an song from an African artist. At first I said to myself - what is this? After I listened to it 3 times I realized it was blues - and we got it from them! Joe playing in the Congo...sounds interesting....
